Shine Get It Guide review: Most popular jeans

While our GIG Gurus chose Lucky Brand as their favorite denim designer, the majority of Shine users (45%) preferred Levi’s jeans. Many women have owned a pair of classic Levi’s at one time or another, and since they’re widely available at affordable prices we can certainly understand why. For those of you who haven’t tried Lucky Brand jeans, we urge you to do so—you may discover a new favorite pair.

It's time for our second Shine Get it Guide review, and for this round we're tackling a really important topic: jeans. Seriously, great jeans can mean the difference between a good day (the perfect pair makes you exude confidence and sex appeal) and a bad one (think sagging in the butt, too tight at the waist, and feeling overall frumpy). We asked our 10 gurus to test out the 4 most popular denim brands in their style of choice. Read on to see which jeans prevailed: Lucky Brand, Levi's, True Religion, or Lee.

    Lucky Brand
Lucky Brand jeans were the clear winner, 6 out of 10 gurus preferred them. Ashley Laurel felt they were "stylish, without trying too hard" and felt the dark wash could take her from day to night. "The minute I put my right leg in a pair of Lucky Brand jeans I was in fashion and comfort heaven," said Tina Case. "I can even do a yoga mountain pose as if I was still wearing my usual yoga pants. They are the perfect length and hug me in all the right places." Jodi Grundig felt confident in her skinny Lucky style. "The fit is perfect, perfect, perfect—stretchy in the waist and thighs, but tight down the calves," she said. Katie Dillon loved the Lucky trouser denim and said to "pair them with heels and a sweater set and you'll look downright professional." Michelle Rivera, however was not a fan of the fit. She said, "baby got back, but I guess not enough of it to fill these jeans."

    Levi's
This classic brand made our gurus feel nostalgic, and 3 out of 10 liked Levi's the best. Michelle Rivera thought they were a comfortable, everyday go-to jean, while Anne-Marie Nichols said she'd wear them "everywhere from Harley rides to lunch with the girls." When Sarah Lipoff slipped on some Levi's she felt "so amazing I wore them out of the store (really, the husband made me)." Katie Dillon liked the vintage-feel of their trouser jeans saying, "You could really go bohemian with these, if you wanted to." While many Gurus considered them old standards, Sahar Aker felt they were a little outdated, "I wore Levi's in high school and college and I will always have a soft spot for them. But I've moved on."

    True Religion
Three of our gurus said True Religion jeans made them feel like a rock star. Other adjectives used were trendy, stylish, and expensive. Clare Yeakel is the only guru who voted them the best, but she had good reason. "I'm almost 40, but single, so that rock star thing is important, people. I will wear these jeans until they fall to pieces, and feel fabulous in them every time I pull them on." Shelby Barone said, "The only way to get around tailoring these jeans is if Michael Jordan is planning on wearing them." She also didn't like all the embellishments. "My butt is the last place I want to draw attention after having kids [and] there was more bling on the bottom pockets than Zsa Zsa Gabor's diamond rings." Ashley Laurel agreed. "Can I say blinged out here? Overall, these jeans are just too much unless you're in a place like Hollywood or New York City." Sarah Lipoff said they're perfect for hitting the scene. "Sadly, my 'scene' includes watching re-runs of 'Iron Chef' while eating ice cream straight from the container."

    Lee
Poor old Lee jeans received no votes. Sahar Aker described them as frumpy, uncool, and cheap. Sarah Lipoff said "I felt like I was attempting to find a knock-off of the good stuff." Anne-Marie Nichols said they were comfortable but too low for her taste. She'd recommend them to "women who think, 'Gosh darnit, I paid serious coin for that tramp stamp. I'm showing it off!'" Some gurus noted that even the skinny jeans have a loose fit. Shelby Barone said "the material had a strange odor, which reminded me of a gas station convenience store." But Tina Case saw one major redeeming factor. "Starting on sale around $34 you can't beat the price for the value. These are the most affordable. And they're stylish!"

Express (not exactly cheap at $80 a pop), or Earnest Sewn (over $200 normally, but I only get mine from flash sales when they're like $70-80). Both of those brands make jeans with extra-long inseams. Most brands stop at a 34" inseam for their longs, and I need a 35". Since I have pretty narrow choices in terms of what will fit me, and thus end up spending more, I try to make them last as long as possible.

Hey, I'll buy whatever fits and whatever I like. If you only buy one brand, it only takes ONE SLIP-UP in their design or manufacturing to make you feel uncomfortable, and then you have no where to go.

      Who agrees???

I am not a jeans person, however, all I have in closet are jeans. From Jessica Simpson to the infamous Levis brand, which throughout the last two decades I have owned pairs of. Finding the right jeans that fit good, can be difficult. Like I said, I have 1 dozen pairs of jeans, and they are all by a different brand. Which explains why they all fit differently, and I can't stand most of them. Their either to baggy, to tight at hips, faded out, to long, to short, and so forth. I love my Levi's though, they are without exception, comfortable to wear, and definitly "hip". I'll never stop buying Levi's. However, when I need a nice jean, an eye catcher, for example "hot" and sweat to wear,,,, I wiill in the future pay a little more, and try a brand like "Lucky Brand", or shop outside of all those stores like Ross, TJ Max, etc' LOL

only the BEST babes should wear Levi's. And if not 14 or 15 oz fabric weight they should NOT be called jeans.

God this review is screwed up. From a guys perspective I would rather see my dates, etc (who are usually more petite) wear True Religions if money was not a object...or Big Stars for value. As far as commonly availble ones Loft jeans look pretty good.

This is what disturbs me, I've been an avid wearer of Lucky Brand jeans for years. I have some pairs I've worn for ten years. This christmas I recieved two new pairs from my wife, great. But looking at them i saw a tag inside saying made in China, What a disappointment! Lucky Brand was an American made item for years, and like other companys, they moved production to China. Compared to my older jeans, the material is not as good, neither is the workmanship. I still wear my new ones, but I prefer the look and feel of my old ones, you know the ones made in the US. Companies no longer care about the citizens of the US, who purchase their products, just as long as they can increase their profit margin.

I'm a fan of GAP, Chicos premium, Not Your Daughter's Jeans, and some Levis. I'm 42 and 5'9 and they all seem to fit my "menopause butt" well.... :o)

I find my jeans at thrift stores, and have worn everything from A to Z. But for comfort, give me Gap. For fit, DKNY, Ann Taylor, and Banana Republic. Levis have never fit me, nor have Lucky. And, at 5 ft. tall, forget True Religion!

Chico's has the BEST pull on jeans (with Flare legs)...They look like a million bucks and I got them on sale for $29.00, so I got them in dark blue and black, so I can wear them to work and still look professional....now I feel like I can have a pajama day at work any day of the week:)

I need help with jeans. I am 67 years old and love to be up to date for my age. I am petite, but have a belly. All jeans I have tried are cut to low at the waist. I wear a 10 petite from J. Jill, but find the waist to tight and to low. I feel all pants are made for young thin girls.

Too short, too long, too big in the hips, too tight on the waist. I can never find the right fit. I think I will just wear sweats.

Allright folks, how about jeans that stay up on a reasonable number of men? We are not all teenybopper chicks. These are the real fashion disasters.

I don't know what kind of butt y'all are working with, but mine is kinda pear shaped and large... Since the Mid 90's I've been wearing LEI and MUDD 99% of the time because they always look great on my behind :) And they're inexpensive.

People that spend big $$$ on jeans are nuts... I'm not wasting money on something that can get ruined at any moment, so clothes, other than for special occasions, I have a max budget... Jeans $25, Tops $20... And I only buy shoes that are on sale...

I don't think you have to pay big money to find jeans that fit great. The only ones I really like, and I've tried a lot of high-end denim and gone home crying, are the Dreamer style from Old Navy. They are $35 full price, I've found them as low as $11 on clearance. I've worn the same 4 pairs for 3 years now and they haven't torn, stretched or faded. Of course, I have a very extreme hip to waist ratio, so I'm sure not everyone would love them like I do.
