    Anti-aging skin care

    By Debby Mayne

As your body ages, your skin may lose its youthful glow from dehydration and loss of elasticity. Wrinkles form, spots show up and a dry, scaly texture often replaces the baby-soft skin that make you look young and vibrant. If you're middle aged or beyond, there are things you can do to prevent your skin from showing your age.

    Drink Water
Water is one of the best therapies for the skin because it hydrates you from the inside, keeping everything in your body--from head to toe--moisturized. The minimum amount of water you should drink is eight 8-oz. glasses per day. More is better. A tip to make sure you consume your daily minimum of water, fill a 32-oz. sports bottle twice a day. With your water bottle nearby at all times, there are no excuses for not getting enough.

    Get Enough Sleep
For healthy skin, get at least seven hours of sleep per night--more if possible. While you sleep, your body spends time repairing and regenerating cells. Not getting enough sleep will cause your skin to look sallow and tired. You may develop bags or dark circles beneath your tired eyes, making you appear older than you are.

    Eat Right
A proper diet filled with all the essential nutrients will help keep your skin younger looking and clear. According to Science Daily, foods high in protein, vitamins and minerals may help provide some anti-aging effects. Eating the wrong foods, such as greasy chips or soft drinks, may diminish the appearance of the skin.

    Exercise
Exercise is good for everything in and on the body. Aerobic exercise increases blood flow, enabling the entire body to receive the oxygen it needs for optimum function. Strength training tones the muscles beneath the skin, giving it a more youthful appearance.

    Use Moisturizers and Sunscreen
Apply moisturizing lotions to your face and other areas to lock in the moisture and prevent your skin from drying out. When you go outside, slather on at least a SPF 15 sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Even on cloudy or overcast days, the sun's rays can be powerful.

    Find the Right Cosmetics
As most women age, they should consider trying lighter cosmetics and hair colors that are more flattering to the tone of their skin. Find a good foundation with an SPF that matches your skin. Lipstick not only adds color to your face, it protects and moisturizes your lips. Men should use lip balm to protect their lips from the sun and keep them from getting chapped.

Look carefully at the kind of products you choose. What you put on your skin can either help it or cause problems, depending on the ingredients so it's important to read the labels of ALL the products you use on your face, body and hair.

Research is showing a buildup of chemicals on the skin can cause acne, dryness and skin cancer. Dryness leads to breakouts, wrinkles and prematurely aging skin.

With so many manufacturers using chemicals in their products, almost any product – cleansers, moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, hair gels and sunscreens – can be causing breakouts on the face and body and drying out the skin.

Here’s a page that shows harmful ingredients commonly used in skin and hair care products. http://www.best-mens-skin-care.com/ingredients.html

To find chemical-free products, read labels and research ingredients – or start with certified organic ingredients which don’t contain harmful chemicals.

I learned through a series of mishaps and severe reactions to skin care products, even to what I thought was a good-quality/high-end, "natural" facial product, that what's in a product can help or harm skin.

A dermatologist recommended I use the cleanest (i.e. most chemical-free) products I could find. Doing that cleared up the severe reaction and my continued use of "clean" products has resulted in great looking and feeling skin.

The best treatments for any age or type skin are gentle ones that are effective. Chemicals are not gentle or effective. In fact, research is showing that a buildup of chemicals on the skin can cause acne, dryness (which leads to prematurely aging skin) and skin cancer.

The best products are those with the highest quality ingredients, not the highest price.
