    Debunking trendy health drink claims

By Valaer Murray, The Daily Meal
    More from Guest Bloggers blog

Standing in front of a beverage case at a convenience store, the array of vitamin- and nutrient-enhanced drinks can be dizzying. Special ingredients and flavors inspired by the trendiest elixirs keep popping up - dragonfruit, mangosteen, noni - making the simple act of choosing a thirst-quencher that much more confusing.

Do you need something to help you sleep? Lose weight? Recharge your batteries? What about enhancing your "energy level (and productivity) and overall wellness," as one green tea company claims? Reading the labels can really get your head spinning. For instance, the Synergy brand kombucha bottles are patterned with the words: rejuvenate, restore, revitalize, replenish, and regenerate. Yes, please!

But let's take a step back - is kombucha really a good night's sleep in a glass bottle? We decided to compare the claims that popular brands make with the published research and opinions of actual health experts. The main health boost in many of the purported elixirs like green tea and pomegranate juice comes from the significant amount of antioxidants they contain, which can help "scavenge" free radicals, meaning antioxidants can lessen the cell damage that an infection, UV exposure, or unhealthy eating causes.

Whether açai or kombucha are magic potions that can elongate life and stave off disease may never be determined, but there are two truths that health experts want you to remember. As exciting as they can be, laboratory study findings don't always pan out for human ailments in the real world. And most importantly, no elixir can do what a healthy diet and lifestyle can do for you. Read through the slideshow to find out if your enhanced beverage of choice is really doing the trick.

I suggest you just get a really good juicer and a few books on juicing. Think raw is alive and cooked is dead. Look up who was Jack Lalain.

They don't mention how the Acai juice is processed. The Acai berry is very high in anti-oxidents but usually it is heated to produce another product. The heating process drastically reduces the anti-oxidents in the berry, making it not very useful in diets. Heating of raw food in general tends to drastically reduce any natural benefits that can be had from the original source.

Just like politicians, these drink manufacturers want your vote and they will tell little untruths, modify actual truths and greatly exagerate everything else.

Well for those of you that are "sick" of hearing about super foods, or healthy alternatives, I would ask if you do always eat healthy and never come down with a cold or the flu etc..? Kombucha is an amazingly potent immune booster and it always immediately clears up any cold or flu I may come by. I DO eat very healthy and avoid hormone ridden dairy products (hence the yogurt recommendation!) and chemically laden vegetables, preservatives etc. Very few people eat consciously and articles like this are detrimental and ignorantly written against all the pollutants our bodies have to fight daily, not including the bad diet of America. Writers like this woman are reckless and uneducated. I suggest to anyone to try Kombucha themselves next time they start coming down with something. It works!

The only reason there is the bashing of these healthy choices is because the FDA and big pharma can't patent them because they have natural ingredients which cannot be patented. And the fact that the "system" doesn't want you healthy so they can keep using you as a cash cow!!! Wake up sheeple, if its in the mainstream media, it probably is a lie!!!

10's of thousands of people die or made worse each year From FDA approved pharmaceutical drugs. which makes it very diifucult for me to believe that they [FDA] have the general publics best interest at heart Now, protecting big pharma from any and all compitition ??

ive learned that anything the fda hasnt put "research" into or says is not proven is probably really good for you in one way or another... anybody wanna challenge me? i have one word for you... stevia

I usually just buy the berries (blueberries, raspberries, black berries) themselves and mix up my own smoothies or thick drinks. For me, there is nothing is better than a cold, all berry smoothie after a 50 mile ride in the heat of the day.

I doubt seriously that any of it is adding even one second to my life, but if it makes me feel refreshed...it has done its job. It seems like people and industries are just in it to make a quick buck by claiming they have discovered "super food" this or that.

I've done alternative healing over 26 years, not only drinks, but herbs and other suppliments, your body metabalism has a lot to do with it, some are too acidic, some too acali, etc. What else are you taking with it?? If it shows positive results, great!!!! For some it may be a miracle, so don't take away thier chance of finding a cure by poo pooing everything. I've seen miracles happen by walking the labrynth, but I didn't have any or others I know, but some did!! The same with other supliments, for some, yes, for other, might help, others no. The big pharms put out and support adverse information to sell thier poisons!!! You head the side effects on the commercial, do you hear that from natural suppliments..................

I wouldnt believe anything the FDA says. When you are buddies with the drug companies you will say anything to make us think drugs are better. More people die from prescription drugs than highway fatalities. I have been drinking Noni for a year now and my blood pressure has decreased, my cholesterol has gone down, bye bye to my arthritis and my energy level is at an all time high with ZERO side effects. Take that FDA!!

Blueberries and strawberries, and in the USA are heavily sprayed with toxic pesticides that you cannot wash off. The cow that give milk for yoghurt in the USA are fed GMO corn that is sprayed with herbicides and contains its own pesticides. And people are stumped why cancer has gone up 10x in the past 20 years. If you do go after these cheap alternatives, make sure they are organic. Eat safe, eat whole, eat Organics, Mother Nature never meant for poisons on our foods.

On a side note, some good glass 1-2 gal jars, an aquarium heater, a thermometer, and a tub to set 6 of those jars into a bath, you are on you way to making you own Kombucha. You can pull the starter out of any unheated (raw and alive) Kombucha drink. Just find the recipe.

I don't know about "healing powers", but traditionally prepared kava sure makes you feel good. I like the kava powder from store.bulakavahouse.com.

Kombucha has many health benefits. It is fun and easy to make yourself, not to mention cheaper. I have been brewing mine for a year now and I have detoxified my body and seen energy improvements and skin tone improved.

I just remembered... I use a metal submersible aquarium water heater. And if I remember the ingredients in Kombucha is the 'Mother,' water, white sugar, and black tea. J.T.'s Kombucha you can get the 'Mother' by using 1/2 to a full cup of his drink. I used coffee filters tied to the top of the glass jars so they could breath.

Been a couple of years since I have made some.

Some of the research you referenced has been shown to be flawed. You need to dig a little deeper before you quote someone. All of the products you mention are high in antioxidants. That alone is enough to make them good for you. Anyone with a lick of common sense knows not to use anything to excess.
