Don't Be Fooled by These Hair-Care Myths

Think brushing your hair 100 strokes each night is healthy? Will frequent trims really make your hair grow faster? Read on to discover the simple truths behind great hair.

Myth: Frequent trims make hair grow faster.
Truth: "Hair grows a half-inch per month, whether you cut it or not," says John Barrett, owner of the John Barrett Salon in New York City. Hair may grow slightly faster in the summer, but that has nothing to do with the stylist's scissors and everything to do with hormones, which do speed growth a little. One thing a trim will do: Eliminate split ends, making hair look better.

    Myth:
Stress can make your hair fall out.
Truth: Although your hair is falling out all the time, to the tune of 50 to 120 strands per day, it's possible that you may lose a few more strands when you're "catastrophically" stressed, meaning you have had a major life change such as a divorce, lost job, or surgery, says Gerome Litt, M.D., an assistant professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. "Other culprits are pregnancy or antibiotics. After a few weeks, it will almost certainly grow back."

Myth: Switching shampoos can make hair look healthier.
Truth: It may seem so, but experts scoff. "Hair can't tell the difference between brands or build up tolerance to any product," says London-based hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley. "Your favorite shampoo will work the same every time you lather up, week after week, month after month." If you have very oily hair or favor a particularly sticky styling product that contains wax, it does pay to use a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks to wash away residue. Good Housekeeping's Beauty Department recommends Redken Hair Cleansing Cream and Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo.

Myth: If you pluck out one gray hair, two or three will sprout in its place.
Truth: While this isn't true, plucking out those gray strands is a bad habit. You can damage the roots, causing infection or leaving a scar.

    Truth:
Five minutes with a set of large hot rollers will add life to straight hair.

Myth: Rinsing with ice-cold water after a shampoo will give you shinier hair.
    Truth:
It might wake you up, but a dousing of cold water will have no effect on the shininess of your tresses.

    Myth:
Coloring your hair causes major damage.
    Truth:
Products today - both at home and in the salon - are gentle enough not to weaken hair. In fact, some contain extra conditioners that may leave hair more manageable than before. Although it's not necessary, "it can't hurt to consult a professional stylist the first time you do anything permanent to your hair or scalp," Kingsley counsels.

    Myth:
You should brush your hair 100 strokes every day
    Truth:
"Brush it only to style it, because brushing pulls hairs out of their follicles and possibly weakens individual strands," says Kingsley.

Myth: You can mend split ends with the right products
    Truth:
Once they're split, that's it. The only thing you can do then is cut them off. Celebrity stylist Jimmy Paul suggests making split ends less noticeable by applying a product containing silicone or beeswax. It will temporarily seal ends together, making hair softer and more manageable. Try: John Paul Mitchell Gloss Drops and John Barrett Bee Hold.

To get really clean hair, you must "lather, rinse, and repeat."

One thorough washing will do the trick.

I'm holding a book in my hands that quotes Frederic Fekkai as saying that cold water DOES make your hair shinier, and alternating shampoos during the week DOES make your hair look healthier.

The cold water does add a natural shine to the hair. It is a fact that hot water dries it up so this is not a myth ..

I wash my hair everytime I take a shower. which is 3-4 times a week or as needed. The beauticians are amazed at how healthy my hair is.

I like to use an apple cider vinegar rinse after I shampoo and condition my hair. I use distilled water (around 2 cups) with about 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and I think it makes my hair look and feel pretty good. (I frost my hair every 3 months).

(90% is white. with a blend of dark brown and greys) I am 53 years old and have had this white hair since I was 38. A friend Bleached my hair to make it blonde. I do believe this process sped up my white hair growth some. The problem is I cant find a hair color that will stay in my hair. Even the permanent colors wash out and change to purple ,pink or green. Is there a colorant out there that will take and hold in my hair?

I have learn so much! Thank you for the knowledge, which is power!

      1) Actually regular trims do make a very important difference in the speed of hair growth. Hair that is thin, fragile or overly processed can actually split and break from the end faster than the hair can grow, so in fact the hair is getting shorter. To prevent this regular trims of split ends and a stylist recommended shampoo and conditioner for your hair type will improve growth.
      2) Stress CAN in fact cause hair to fall out or to not grow in certain areas due to a build up of certain hormones, check out Joico's CLINICURE for more information on why this happens. It is very easily treated, ask your stylist.
      3) Flat Hair, forget the rollers, there are hundreds of professional body inducing hair products out there that work within minutes with a blow dryer, try Sexy Hair's Blow It Up!
      4) Rinsing with cool water after a shampoo will close the cuticle of the hair, just like with skin, after cleansing you want to rinse with cool water to close your pores. Closing the cuticle of the hair will make each strand appear smoother which will in turn give the appearance of shine!
      5) Box Colors found in stores CAN and DO damage hair, especially when performed by a non-professional. Professional color lines found in salons contain much less ammonia and other such harmful chemicals. A professional will know how much of what and for how long to put on your hair. You wouldn't trust your supermarket shelf to answer your vision or dental problems would you?
      6) DO NOT put silicone on your hair! There are (again) hundreds of professional products out there to smooth and tame hair WITHOUT silicons.

To have knowledge is to have power.

Few simple rules work best : keep it clean, trim it to keep it healthy and rinse well!

one more thing, I chose to go short because of breakage. When my hair was long, I was always cleaning stray hairs, up everywhere I sat. Very annoying to be riding with someone with windows down and watch as a strand of hair flies across the cab of your car or truck, into the other persons face or lap.

Thank you all for your respective information on hair care. Always thought colors could cause damage, over time. However, can't stand the greys so I color only the temple areas or where noticeable. Do agree that hair does not grow as fast and thick as you age. Yes, short hairstyles look better as you age, sorry to those of you, but this is a fact.

I'm 72 years young and have always washed my hair daily. I am told I have beautiful hair even tho' I've stopped coloring it. It is also short and that isn't because I 'don't care'. To that comment, I would say short hair is sometimes harder to style than long. I can style mine better than the beauty shop because I'm well acquainted with what it will or won't do. I have found that shampoo from the drug store does just as well as high-priced salon brands. Amazing how you discover things that work for less when you're on a fixed income!

I'm now curious to know if the comment I just read is true-"Just remember one crucial thing about color... if it does it in less than 35 minutes, DO NOT USE. It is a HIGH LIFT color and it has high potential to either fry your hair (over process) or turn you an odd shade of orange/red/ even blue/grey...." I am 51 and use color to hide grey...recently have used the 10minute products. Am I causing damage?
    • Caulie  •  1 year 9 months ago
I am african american, my hair is very fine and thin. I tried everything, but it still won't thicken. I am wearin it natural now which to me looks a lot better. It still needs to grow more especially near the temples.
    • Charissa Sheffield  •  1 year 10 months ago
Also, dont wash your hair everyday. Washing it, everyday, doesnt give it enough time to take in the natural oils. Your hair needs its natural oils to stay shiny & not look frizzed ontop. You can still hop into the shower & wash your body, just not your hair.

& yes, if you want your hair to grow, longer. You MUST cut it every few weeks. Everyone has split ends. its just some people dont cut theirs off at the right time. If you want your hair to be long, you must cut it. because that cuts & stops the split end from splitting up your hair. If you wait a long time before cutting it, youll just end up having to cut more off. which makes it take forever to get to the length you want it at.

Funny, the cold water tip works for me every time! The reasoning behind it is that rinsing with cold water closes the cuticle.
