OMG! What happened to Halloween costumes for little girls? These risqué getups look like they're for prostitutes not princesses.
Halloween costumes sure have devolved from the days that I wandered around my neighborhood gathering candy from the neighbors. I remember when my fellow Brownies and Girl Scouts would wear cardboard boxes to go trick-or-treating as a beautifully wrapped Christmas gift or we would slip a sheet over our heads to become a group of ghosts. But nowadays it seems like tween and teen girls are inspired by the antics of teens Miley Cyrus and Taylor Momsen and dressing in butt-grazing miniskirts, snug-fitting midriff tops and hooker heels! Would you let your daughter dress like this?
"One thing you do notice, and I'm trying to find a nice way to say this, is that children seem to be maturing at an earlier age," Howard Beige, executive VP of Rubie's, which has been creating and selling costumes since 1951 tells the New York Post. "Today, princesses are probably the most popular theme, but the age group is getting narrower - younger, ages 3 to 6. Our size Large is way down [in sales] when it comes to princesses."
Why are we allowing little girls to become over-sexualized at such a young age? Nowadays I'm disturbed to see flirty French Maidand naughty nursedisguises (which do little to disguise anything) being sold to elementary school students. When did October 31 stop being about candy and cute costumes? Honestly, I think the scariest thing about this Halloween is thought of tweens walking the streets in any of these inappropriate outfits. Do you agree, HollyMoms?
