10 Tips for Getting Good Sleep

There's a lot of advice out there about getting good sleep -- and it's very important. We quickly adjust to being sleep-deprived, and don't notice that we aren't functioning at a normal level, but lack of sleep really affects us. If you're feeling blue or listless, try going to sleep thirty minutes earlier for a week. It can really help.

Here are tips that have helped me get good sleep:

    Good habits for good sleep:

    1. Exercise most days, even if it's just to take a walk.

    2. No caffeine after 6:00 p.m.

    3. An hour before bedtime, avoid doing any kind of work that takes alert thinking. Addressing envelopes-okay. Analyzing an article-nope.

    4. Adjust your bedroom temperature to be slightly chilly.

    5. Keep your bedroom dark. Studies show that even the tiny light from a digital alarm clock can disrupt a sleep cycle. We have about six devices in our room that glow bright green; it's like sleeping in a mad scientist's lab. I have to put a pillow over the cable box.

    6. Keep the bedroom as tidy as possible. It's not restful to fight through chaos into bed.

    If sleep won't come:
    7. Breathe deeply and slowly until you can't stand it anymore.

    8. If your mind is racing (you're planning a trip, a move; you're worried about a medical diagnosis), write down what's on your mind. This technique really works for me.

    9. Slather yourself with body lotion. This feels good and also, if you're having trouble sleeping because you're hot, it cools you down.

    10. If your feet are cold, put on socks.

If all else fails, spark a jay and drift away to happy land. I'm referring to medical marijuana of course. Yeah.

It always helps me to rub one off before going to bed. It never fails to make me calm and ready for a good night of rest and relaxation!

I used to have the HARDEST time going to sleep but now I don't. Getting yourself to go to sleep is for the most part, mental. What better way to go to sleep than to trick your brain. I do this technique at night and it helps. I start off by closing my eyes , take deep breaths and picture myself running down a beach. I have been running for miles and I am so tired. I feel the wind in my hair from the waves of the ocean and I can hear the calmness of the waves. I am so tired from running that I lay down. I have no worries in the world and I lay down on the cool sand and fall asleep. I imagine myself on the beach over and over till I actually feel like am there. You can use any other place that calms you too. The pool, a desert, in the mountains, whatever you want. Try it!

There are some odd suggestions present in this article and some important ones absent. First, if you can't sleep then you shouldn't have a cable box in your room. Your room should be for sleeping. Make that association and sleeping will be much easier. Second, try listening to ambient music to take those distracting thoughts out of your head. I recommend ambiscience for the iphone/itouch. Finally, check your diet. Do you eat fried food or do you eat food that won't keep your body working when it should be sleeping?

Tony--I know what would put you to sleep. Get out the dictionary and learn how to spell. It's obvious you've never tried that.

Honestly try yoganidra and chinese soothing music ( fish boat) before sleep. Do not excersise after 6 PM. Complete dinner before 8 ,

Gretchen Rubin...you've got some SERIOUS neuroses. A pillow over the cable box? Sleeping in a mad scientist's lab? And you're giving advice? Un-freaking believable.

i like to take a shower before going to bed. i use a shower gel designed to relax. while in the shower i try to get all of my thoughts out and literally wash the day away. :) i also spray my bedroom with a comforting scent. i only use it at night so that i associate the scent with going to sleep.

What works for me if I can't sleep is reading; it usually tires me out, and I can almost never fall asleep without reading first.

If that doesn't work or if my mind is racing and keeping me awake, I go to my "happy place." I focus on a serene location, for me it's the sight of the Grand Tetons in Wyoming silhouetted against the night sky, and I don't think of anything else. It worked for me last night. :) I first heard about doing that on the radio, and it works because it forces you to stop thinking about what's going on in your life, it replaces your hectic thoughts with a happy and calming one, and those two things together allow you to relax and fall asleep.

I have wrestled with insomnia off and on for years, and I am in the process of writing an ebook on the subject of returning to sleep once awake in the middle of the night and also useful for getting to sleep if that is one of your issues.

finding those ways to change the attention to one of relaxing is critical.

      Peace...

It sounds like your not as tired as you would like to think when you lay down, a few things do not use your bedroom for anything else but sleep & sex, if you lay down and are there for more then 15 min being restless get up go into another room. If your mind is racing take a few hours before bed to have anote book where you can write down things wether it be what you need to do still or how you feel about things. If theres something you can do at home and is really bothering you then do it. When your tired your body will know and then go to bed. Exercise is fine at 30 min a day.. this needs to be done 2 hours or more before you go to bed as well as any eating you do so your body has time to settle down.

Hey invisible girl, you're not...invisible that is. Think highly of yourself and you'll realize he screwed up by losing you. He'll probably realize it soon also but do not fall for it or you'll find yourself on an emotional rollercoaster. Stand firm and remember "I am special and deserve better, I deserve someone who appreciates me and doesn't take me for granted". Though we are few, there are still some men who understand the value of having someone to call and say "Good Night Darling". Take care...
