10 ways to walk off fat faster

Here's how to boost your calorie-burn big time-without much extra effort.

    Get some poles
Using Nordic poles torches an average 20 percent more calories by engaging the muscles in your upper body and torso, says Mark Fenton, author of The Complete Guide to Walking. Plant the pole firmly at a 45-degree angle behind you, then push back forcefully against the ground to propel yourself forward.

    Skip killer hills
Don't assume the biggest inclines are the best for burning fat. "It's better to maintain your speed on a moderate hill than to slow down substantially on a steeper one," Fenton says.

    Use your arms
Vigorously pumping your bent arms helps you go faster-and burn more calories, says Lee Scott, walking coach and director of WoW Power Walking in Toronto.

    Take smaller steps
The best way to boost your speed-and thus your burn-is to take shorter, faster steps, Scott explains. Time yourself walking 100 steps, then recover for one minute. Count another 100 steps, and try to shave five seconds off your time. Repeat 12 times.

    Set goals you can see
Choose markers (stop sign, park bench, etc.) and speed up until you reach them, suggests Therese Iknoian, author of Fitness Walking. Slow down for the same distance.

    Wipe the pavement
Roll through from heel to toe. When you get to the ball of your foot, push off as if wiping gum off your sole, Iknoian says. This will get your calf, hamstring, and glute muscles involved-and the more muscle you use, the more calories you burn.

    Go shoe shopping
To get the most power from your push-off, opt for a shoe with minimum cushioning and maximum flexibility in the front of the shoe, Fenton says.

    Stand straight
When your body's aligned, your back and butt muscles are able to work more powerfully, so you walk faster and torch more calories. Stand tall with a straight spine, keeping your ears and shoulders aligned over your hips.

    Raise your rate
Wearing a heart-rate monitor is like having your own coach keeping you at optimal fat-torching pace. "It'll give you a push if you're slowing down too much, but also get you to ease up if you're pushing too hard," Iknoian says.

    Add strength
Simple moves like push-ups and lunges get more muscles involved for major burn, reveals Harley Pasternak, who trains many celebs, including our November cover celeb Hilary Duff. When you walk, stop every five minutes and do one minute of moves. This will help up your metabolism over the long-term, too. What's better than burning more calories while you walk? Blasting them off while you sleep, of course.

Anyone that walks or runs knows that a longer stride moves the weight from your joints and bones to your thigh muscles. Shorter steps makes running "easier" for just that reason, your resting your muscles more. Longer strides places more demand on your lungs as well. As usual, the people writing this stuff know nothing more than anybody else.

Use "Run Walk Bike Meter" Iphone App to measure calories burnt.
Shows you the number of miles run, your location on map and saves the route you covered in History.
      Much Much cheaper than pedometer

These are great tips but only if you're not around anybody else. I live in a downtown area so I do long walks through the city but I think i'd seem crazy (and probably annoying) if I were stopping every minute to do pushups or pumping my arms. :D Still some of these will definitely work!

hills do burn calories. If you walk 6 miles on the flat you burn about 600 calories. If the 6 miles are up a mountain at a 1:6 grade you climb 5280 feet. If you weigh 180 pounds you do an extra 1.26 MJ of work, and burn about an extra 1300 calories.

Look into workout music that includes songs and artists you love to dance to, and choose a variety of workout types - walking speeds, "aerobic" or stepping speeds, and some instructor types. Don't forget to have a slower, cool-down track for the end. Music helps take our mind off our aches and pains, our huffing and puffing, and make time fly by.

Thanks! I try to go walking at least 3 times a week; these tips will definitely add a little more much-needed oomph!

No offense Sunshine, but I would skip the prayer and buy the pedometer. I bought one and lost 30 lbs in less 4 months and have been able to maintain that loss for almost 2 years. I don't hit the 10,000 mark everyday, but I do make sure that I walk a minimum of 30 minutes each day. I started my program at age 55, so good luck!

DON'T use the heal-to-toe if you start running; the impact can cause injury. The push ups work. Start slow. I have no upper body strength, so I started with 5 push ups every five minutes for a 30 minute run. OH NO! people might stare! Would you rather look like "crazy-fitness-person" or "fat slob?" The rest of America has obviously gotten it wrong, so screw what they think.

I agree with Hooligan, but the walking benefits the body inother ways than weight loos.

Use hand weights to increase upper body strength and boost heart rate. Not just holding them, but really pumping them, including pumping them over your head intermittently like you're punching the sky and punching outward to the side. Lifting your knees higher while walking will really boost your heart rate. You'll walk slower but, besides increased HR, you engage different muscles in legs and butt and improve balance as well.

Wow, Hooligan's advice is really enlightening - everyone, be sure to read it twice! Walk/run all you can, but if you don't have knowledge of the calories you are putting into your body, you will likely fail to lose the weight! Like most things, knowledge is the key to change.

The advantage of exercise is that it allows your cells to utilize insulin easier. Anyone who is type 2 diabetic or pre diabetic knows that exercise helps their blood sugar level and thereby can reduce the their risk of needing medication to control their blood sugar.

I love to walk, I do it every single day. I just dump everything I was doing and answer my walk call. 30 to 50 minutes. when I do not walk, I feel tired all day and not as active. Drinking water and walking keeps my weight at its best for my 51 years of life. No need for a buddy, I tried it..it just slows me down and disturbs my walking meditation.

I would really look like a geek if I used the poles as suggested. How about just walking further or faster to burn off the fat.

I started 90 min brisk walking in April 2010 and combined it with eating about 1350 cal a day. I lost 45 pounds in 100 days..... from 215 to 170 ( I am 6ft 2in) Been maintaining 170 for several months by continuing to walk 45 min every other day and eating about 1800 cal a day. It was easy really -- just discipline and never cheating.... First time I every went on a diet and the purpose was to lose the weight gained a pound or two over each of the last 20 years. Walking worked for me... I despise running but can deal well with walking.
