11 Public Places with the Most Germs

Respiratory droplets-the medical community's polite term for what comes out of a person when they sneeze or cough-are filled with the germs that made the person sick. When we cough or sneeze they disperse widely, landing here and there, where they wait patiently for someone to touch them (research shows they can remain potent for several hours). Once on someone's hands, they stand a good chance of infecting them, since it is human nature to frequently touch our faces. This is exactly how colds and flu happen: The vast majority of cases are passed from person to person. Think of things that are touched by many people in a day, and you'll come up with the places where germs are shared. These can include:

    1. Handrails

    2. Elevator buttons

    3. Grocery cart handles

    4. Restaurant menus

    5. Money from a cash register

    6. Light switches

    7. Salt and pepper shakers in restaurants

    8. Salad bars

    9. ATM machines

    10. Exercise equipment

    11. Water fountain handles

Makes you nervous, doesn't it? Relax. It takes just a little common sense and attention to protect yourself from public germs. Here are ways to keep germs at bay:

Handwashing. Always wash your hands before cooking, eating, or inserting your contact lenses. Wash your hands after cooking, using the toilet, petting an animal, handling garbage, blowing your nose, or coughing or sneezing into your hand. It doesn't matter if you wash with regular or antibacterial soap as long as you do a thorough job.

Use hand sanitizer. Alcohol-based sanitizers that require no water are among the greatest health inventions of recent times. They're efficient at killing germs, whenever and wherever you encounter them, without the need of water or towels.

Keep hands away from your face. No matter how many times you wash them, if you are in public, your hands will pick up germs. Germs will quickly enter your body if you rub your eyes or nose, stroke your chin, or touch your lips.

PLUS: 9 Quick Kitchen Cleaning Secrets

Avoid the communal candy bowl or cookie jar. Given that only 67 percent of people who say they wash their hands actually do, and that only a third of those people use soap, you can imagine what's lurking in there.

Being exposed to germs help our immune systems. If your body is never exposed to them, then you won't be able to fight it. I go to the gym 4-5 times per week and I actually get sick less!! I also open bathroom doors with my hands, press elevator buttons and sit on toilet (not hover over it - which the handle of the toilet and stall door have more germs than the seat)... people need to stop being such germ-a-phobes!!

I completely agree with suchaclevergirl ... people wonder why kids are so sickly nowadays ... we OVERUSE hand sanitizer. Sanitizer has its place, but I've seen people use it right after washing their hands with soap ... ridiculous. Don't people know that hand sanitizer doesn't just get rid of bad germs; it gets rid of the good germs too.

I knew a lot these from my common sense lol Ever since I was a teenager I would not use my hand sanitizer until I was done with the menu and then if I needed salt or ketchup I would wrap a napkin around it so my hands wouldn't directly touch it. I mean just think how many people touch this crap!

I always say "how many penises have touched the men's bathroom door handle"? Sick....

I agree to a certain extent with 'getting over the germ fear', the problem is I do not wish to ingest fecal germs. If everyone would simply wash their hands after using the bathroom, public places wouldnt be so nasty, but how many times have we seen people in a public bathroom walk out of the stall and exit without washing their hands. People also seem nonchalant about spreading their viruses in public. So I will never part with my hand sanitizer.

GET OVER THE GERM FEAR.... articles like this perpetuate the hysteria!!!!

The world is dirty. We NEED germs and bacteria. They aren't ALL bad. How else do we build up our immune systems? Over than in a healthcare setting, anti bacterial hand gel is the worst invention.... people are ADDICTED to using it. I don't use it or carry it.

It's marketing and hype, people! Again, there are germs EVERYWHERE. Anything a human being touches, breathes on..... germs. All the bleach, anti bacterial gel and other crapola isn't going to change that fact. Practice decent hygeine, keep a clean house.... and you'll be fine. Wash your hands after using the restroom, before you eat and/or prepare food. Just good old soap and water. Works great!

I hate the ad where the Mom can't open the bathroom door w/her foot,... really? Seriously? What will happen if she touches the door knob? Leprosy? E boli? Boils? Hoof and mouth? JUST OPEN THE DOOR. You're teaching your kid to be afraid of everything..... plus, how is he gonna build resistance to the afore mentioned terrors if he's not exposed to germs? And no, eating the right yogurt won't do it... LOL

      Whatever. I'm done.
