Steve Eichner What with her documentary airing last night and her SNL hosting gig coming up, this is officially the week of Miley. Let's be honest: this is officially the year of Miley. And I know I might make some of you mad by saying this, but I'm not mad. Am I going to pretend I enjoyed the VMA performance? I am not.
But I like the new music, I've loved the hair since the beginning, and I generally just think she's getting more flack than she deserves. Plus, what I saw when I watched Miley: The Movement on MTV last night was a girl who knows what she's doing (at least to the extent we all do, which is to say she's not perfect) and still has the infectious spirit we all fell in love with on Hannah Montana. (And yes, by "we," I do mean ladies like me, who at the time had aged out well of the Disney Channel demo but still loved it.) For me, these were the most fascinating Miley doc takeaways:
Miley's an old soul. I think because she's younger than me, it tickled me to hear her say "this is pre-iPhone, kids!" when remembering how she and her dad used to sing together, tape it on cassette, and listen to it in his truck.

She admits to having to struggle to find her sound. Especially since the point of this documentary is to convince us that Miley's in control of everything she's doing, I thought it was kinda gutsy of her to say that five years ago, she thought she'd pursue rock and have a sound "like a Paramore."
Liam has left the building. Liam is not mentioned once in this documentary. Not sure whether that was a late edit or he just wasn't around for the taping (reports say they actually began splitting in February). Either way, he's left out of the time capsule. But she did thank him in her album notes.
Meanwhile, about the Mike Will thing... The rumors of Miley and producer Mike Will dating spiked with the release of the "23" video, so I was on alert for any moments between them during the doc. No such luck: everything's strictly profesh, but Miley talks about him constantly and clearly thinks he's a genius, and vital to her next phase as an artist.
She lived in Philly for three months while brainstorming her new album. I always thought the snaps of her in Philadelphia were linked to her visiting Liam as he shot Paranoia, but it turns out she had an apartment there and just hung out for a bit, enjoying living like a typical twentysomething. "I felt like I was a real human being for a minute," she said of the time.
She is ridiculously in-tune with her promotion efforts. I'm not sure Miley needs a head of social media, because she does the job pretty well herself. We see her stress over "Can't Stop" sitting at #181 on iTunes for a spell, visit the Twitter headquarters, and exhorts a crowd to follow her on Twitter, saying with a totally straight face that she's trying to get her count up. (As of this morning, she has over 14 million.)

She vacuums on the private plane. Bahaha.
She's as starstruck by Britney as the rest of us. My favorite Miley quote during the segment with them in the studio: "Eight-year-old me would be pissing her pants right now."
She's done with movies. "I did one movie and said, 'I'm never doing that again, I'm making music for the rest of my life.'"
She talks to her puppies. When Miley wants her dog Bean to calm down, she invokes the ghost of a past beloved pup who as much chiller: "WWLD: What Would Lila Do?"
Speaking of dogs: the above is what Miley wears when she's sick as one. You guys, too?
She can turn it on in a heartbeat. It turns out Miley was supposed to show up at the VMAs in a police car and was pissed when the bit didn't come off. But the second she steps out of the car, she goes zero to sixty mugging for her fans.
And in discussing the VMA spot, she uttered the best retort for the next time someone calls you a hot mess: "It's a strategic hot mess."
