20 Ways to Stock a Fun and Healthy Easter Basket

By Carmen Staicer - Chief Mom at DietsInReview.com

Easter is a highly anticipated holiday for kids. After going through Lent with out any treats, Easter would deliver a basket of goodies and a sugar high that caused a crash reminiscent of the 1929 stock market disaster. When I became a mom, I realized the calories in those Easter treats were not worth the gym time to work them off. I also learned that I could create a basket for my kids that would be well received, and also better for them.

The calorie counts in some of the most popular Easter basket treats should require sign-up in a spin class immediately following that last tasty bite. A Cadbury Cream Egg has 170 calories, in one egg! A four-pack of marshmallow peeps have 130 calories. And the Easter basket staple, a seven ounce hollow chocolate bunny has half a day's worth of calories at 1,050!

Instead, try these lower calorie candy alternatives, because we all know an Easter basket wouldn't be the same without them.

    • 10 Jelly Beans - around 50 calories
    • 1 Reese's Peanut Butter Cup - around 90 calories
    • 4 Hershey's Kisses - 90 calories
    • 3 Butterscotch hard candies - 70 calories
    • Sugar-free Dubble Bubble gum - 7 calories each

Fill just a few eggs with these treats to keep the calorie and sugar crash to a minimum for everyone. Then stock the baskets with these healthier, and even more fun, alternatives that get them ready for spring!

    1. Bubbles
    2. Sidewalk chalk and paint
    3. New flip-flops
    4. Jump ropes
    5. Hula Hoops
    6. Footballs, soccer balls or basketballs
    7. Bathing suits
    8. Sunscreen
    9. Hand sanitizer with a belt clip
    10. Hair ties
    11. Lip balm or gloss
    12. Toy cars
    13. Toothbrushes
    14. Coloring books and crayons
    15. Storybooks
    16. Stickers
    17. Temporary tattoos
    18. MP3 gift cards
    19. Nail polish
    20. Water guns or balloons

Enjoying the Easter holiday doesn't have to mean suffering from a sugar crash that evening. As with everything, keep the sweet treats in moderation and get creative with things outside the candy aisle.

I dont think anything is wrong with having some candy but to make the entire basket loaded with candy is insane, you may as well hand the kids a 5lb bag of sugar and rent a hospital room. If you give your kids a lil candy mixed with some fun toys and alot of love then that is all they need. My kids got some eggs filled with candy and some with money and it had some fun lil toys and books and bubbles and an outfit. They had fun and thought wow what an awesome basket!. They didnt miss havn tons of candy.

Hmm... that sounds like a great idea... just a few treats so that your not the "uncool parent"... but a lot of fun stuff that they don't miss a giant basket FULL of treats... I will have to keep this in mind when it's time for me to break the easter baskets with my (future) kids... :D

Toothbrushes and sunscreen in an Easter basket? Seriously? And what child likes butterscotch kisses? Easter treats only come once a year. Live a little!!

Awesome, I know my daughter gets candy all the time anyway so its feels good to give her some treats / fun that don't have to do with more candy. I will use a few of these ideas, Thanks

Great ideas! All good to get in the mood for spring! I always put a new Spring outfit rolled up in my daughters' Easter baskets.

my children are getting tired of all the candy they recieve on a holiday like easter. in the excitement, they eat a lot of candy that first day and as the days pass, they eat less and less... in the end, they each have a walmart bag full of candy that does not get eaten and ends up in the trash after months of not being touched! So, i have started stocking the easter baskets or christmas stockings with chips, cookies, beef jerky, gum, u know, all their favorites...the special (name brand) items from the grocery store that mom wont splurge on usually and they absolutely love it and they cant wait to see what items they get... (i won the mom of the year award on christmas for buying my oldest son a can of squeeze cheese...hahaha! too funny, but its a tiny can and it cost $3.50 and is gone within an hour... (to me, it is not worth the money and does not last very long, so i never buy it, but it makes for the perfect special treat!) they get a few candy items from me but most of it still comes from relatives, so they still get candy. I also, stick fun items like pool toys and swim gear in their easter baskets!

Yeah, I've heard the so-called "high" from sugar is completely made-up anyway.

Serious post... You know what I do on Easter.

I wake up in the morning and go to CHURCH because it's a RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY. It's not "give me stuff day", or "Second Christmas (which is another shamefully marketed holiday). Then I have a large dinner with my family. Do kids get baskets? Yes of course they get something small because kids like treats and you can tie it into bible stories somehow (much like how the three wise men brought Jesus presents on the day he was born...so Christmas presents, you know), but it's sickening how commercial this holiday has become. It's just another cheap "Stuff Day"!

I always put lots of cash, gift cards, plastic toys, and other stuff into Easter baskets because after all isn't that what Easter is all about. Getting stuff. I loved getting stuff when I was a kid, and I want to raise my children to also appreciate getting stuff on holidays which celebrate the collection of stuff. I feel bad for children in poor countries who can't afford to get stuff on holidays. What is the point of even having a holiday is you can't get stuff.

I have to say that these are good ideas, but there is nothing wrong with giving your child some actual candy, with actual sugar.

awesome ideas. i don't put candy in their baskets and they've never noticed because they're too busy playing with the little toys i put in instead. i also fill the plastic eggs with spare change, grapes, or raisins.

My sister only got a choclate bunny in her basket for candy. The rest is a bunch of little random things she likes (ex. Bracelets, small plastic animals, bubbles) her candy is coming from the plasic easter eggs.

I'm all for moderation and being healthy, but there's nothing wrong with the occasional indulgence. Seriously, enjoy some things for what they are!

What a kill joy...Candy and Easter baskets GO together!! Moderation is the key!! Why does the food police alwyas have to ruin everything?
    • Jett  •  2 years 2 months ago
My mom didn't like getting us a lot of candy, so she put other things in our baskets instead, like the items you mentioned above. She'd still get each of us a chocolate bunny, though, and a couple other goodies.
