    3 surprising fat burning tricks

Exercise makes you happy, healthy, sexy, and, unfortunately-really, really hungry. Back when I had the time to log many workouts every week, I fought constantly not to eat back all the calories I burned. Sometimes I was successful, other times-like the day I came back from a lunchtime power yoga class to find a monster brownie on my desk-not so much. You want to fuel your body when you work out of course, but not with mammoth brownies or seconds of pasta, or giant protein shakes you could swim in. A better idea: Understand the source of your raging appetite. Exercise is believed to trigger the release of a hunger-boosting hormone called ghrelin (it sounds like gremlin for a reason). It's meant to protect the body from losing too much weight too quickly, but considering most gyms practically have a food court these days, that's not a danger most of us face. Here's how I keep the ghrelins at bay:

    Snack First, Sweat Later
Twenty minutes later, to be exact. Exercising on an empty stomach lowers blood sugar, which can increase your appetite so you inhale your food later. You can always go for that pre-workout stalwart, a banana, but I'm not a huge fan, so I reach for about 4 ounces of yogurt or another carb-rich snack instead.

    Take Preemptive Notes
Writing down everything you consume is a proven way to lose weight, but try this trick: Do it before you eat. Seeing what you're about to put in your mouth-on paper-gives you instant perspective. Case in point: "Turkey sandwich plus two bags of chips plus a soda plus five of those cookies my co-worker brought it." Would you eat all that? I think not.

Drink Lots of Water-On the Rocks
Studies show people who drink water regularly eat 200 fewer calories a day. (Here are some other sneaky tips to get rid of extra calories.) If you make it ice-cold, you may even burn extra calories without trying-researchers in Germany found that drinking six glasses of ice water a day can raise you metabolism by 50 calories. I'll drink (a whole lotta frigid H20) to that!

What's your favorite workout snack? How do you keep postworkout hunger under control? Please tell me your tricks!

drink lots of freshly squeezed lemon juice post-workout. Gandhiji used it when he was on a hunger strike. Apparently it shrinks the stomach therefore suppressing the appetite!

I try to eat something with a good amount of protein right after a workout; either a tuna or turkey sandwich or a simple protein shake. It has worked wonders for me to fight the cravings; even though I like to workout on an empty stomach, except for a couple glasses of water.

I've lost over 50 lbs. and have kept it off for over a year on a cleansing and fat burning system. One of the benefits of this system is increased energy, which helps me to 'want' to exercise! I'm 57, but I now feel much younger and feel like I have offset family genetics of heart disease. Please, do your homework and check out this company at jnvail.isagenix.com and see why I am so passionate about this life-changing program.

If you're going to incorporate running and some weight lifting in your workout, then try saving your running for last this time. The first 5-10 minutes of your run is going to be your body raising its own heart rate. If you're already warmed up you're going to get more out of your run. Also the muscles you worked out earlier will still be worked out during your run as the blood flow to them will be increased during your run.

I don't believe in snacking between meals. Never have and never will. My weight has always been around 118-120 and I'm 5'5". Think before you eat! That's what I live by, does this assist my body to be stronger or will it weaken my system. Cookies not so good. Turkey and vegetables much better. Eat to live to live to eat.

Well, for me, I actually work out A LOT, like an hour or more every single day, so kind of have to eat a lot, but its all strictly clean nutrition no junk. I find eating 5 smalls a day is nice, because I love to eat, and gt to eat often that way, I keep ZERO junk food in the house, because if its there, I'll eat it, hands down. And if you have kids, and think you need to keep that stuff in the house for them, you dont, kids should eat healthy snacks, and just take them out once in a while for treats. For my work out ruetines, I eat a few meals, the wait about 3 hours to work out, and after my work out, I have a 12 oz. (a cup and a half) recovery drink, mixed with water not milk, and a recovery protein bar, which is actually very filling, and not fattening at all. Me myself, I probley eat an average of 2500 calories a day, and I have found my apitite has incresed, but I make sure I eat only every 2 hours, and nothing in between, and I also write everything donw

I am more of a night person than a morning person. I work 2nd shift so I have found that it is easier to eat smart during the day and be conscious about what you eat. Then after you get off work head home for a twenty minute relax and then head to the gym if you have the ability to go to an all night gym or if you have a tredmill at home. I do my one hour jog/walk on the tredmill and then finish with some light weight lifting just so the next morning I feel like I have done something. After I leave the gym I head home and take a shower and head straight to bed. I don't know about curbing the hunger all I do is drink a lot of water throughout the day and drink a whole bottle of water before I head to bed so my stomach feels full but there aren't any major calories in my stomach. I also will not allow myself to eat after 7pm. I usually don't get to bed before 2am anyway so that gives my body plenty of time to digest anything that is left in there. I have lost 40lbs in three months and headed for another sixty by winter and my doctor is shocked at my results. It just takes setting your mind to it and remembering every day that you are doing this for you, not for anyone else. I have a 5 yr old son that I want to be around for in fourty years and if I continued the lifestyle I was living I wouldn't be around for ten let alone forty to see my grandchildren and great grandchildren.

ice cold water can make you nauseous if you drink too much-especially with food. save the ice water for during the workout when your body needs help staying cool. this is especially important if you live in hot climates. drink cool water-not ice cold- instead.

Responding to leald1's post: Where's the scientific proof that cold water causes intestinal cancer? There are no more carcinogens in water that is cold than water that is warm. Besides, the water that makes it into your intestines is body temperature by the time it gets there. I'd like to see some proof, because to say that cold water causes cancer sounds absolutely ridiculous.

I don't know if drinking ice water truly "raises" your metabolism - but is more so just simple, if not simplified, thermodynamics resulting in extra Calories being burned. With your internal body temp of approx 98.6 degrees, ice water or anything for that matter entering your body at 32 degrees will be raised to body temp as it is processed, regardless of whether it's expelled or used internally. That, in itself leads to stating the definition of a calorie - amt of energy needed to raise 1 gm of water 1 degree C. Raising 1 cup (236.6 g) of ice water to body temp (37 C) would burn 8.8 Calories (1 Calorie (as related to food) = 1000 calories). Which comes to 141 Calories per gallon or drinking approx 25 gallons of ice water to lose 1 lb. Drink up!

Hi! So, first of all, some of you mentioned not being able to eat post-workout because you were dizzy....there is a very good chance that your blood sugar is low which means you need to eat. Eating AFTER exercise is the absolute most important meal you can eat all day! Imagine, you go into the gym to workout, your metabolism is burning much faster than before, and you're going to give it absolutely nothing to burn?? You're going to burn some fat while working out and also a little post workout, but without eating anything your body is going to turn to muscle sources for energy replacement.

Also, someone asked about sports drinks while you workout. Yes! You don't need a lot, but some to sip on every 10-15 minutes while you work out is a great idea. This keeps your blood sugar stable so you have a better work out and don't start eating away at your muscle. The calorie amount is completely insignificant!

Next, why would anyone eat an early dinner and then eat ICE to keep them full until breakfast? If you eat at 6pm and don't get breakfast until about 7am the next day then your body has gone 13 hours without eating! Want to try to imagine how much your metabolism has slowed down at that point? How about how low your blood sugar is? Or how much of your breakfast you're going to store as fat because your body thinks your starving? One of the biggest mistakes people make is going so long without eating! The "don't eat past 6" rule is not valid. Eating past 6 does not make you fat... making your body think it's starving so it stores your next meal as fat ....makes you gain weight. The best rule of thumb is....if your stomach's growling then it's too late! Your body is already starving. Eating small frequent meals is the best away around this!

Lastly... "Good on the lips is NOT life of the hips!" I eat a lot of good food....but I also control my portions and exercise regularly....

First of all dear, it's plateau, not plato. Plato was a Greek philosopher.
Second, you should start exercising again--that's what you should do to get back on track.

I started exercising seriously in my late teens, and through the years I have changed to a couple of different ways of exercising, including jogging, which I did for many years. I am in my mid fifties now, and I am still exercising, including strength training and weights. Of course my middle age body has changed an I have more fat around my middle, which I never had before, but it is getting under control. I have always exercised in an empty stomach, and never felt hungry after. In fact after I exercise I am not hungry at all, and I have to wait between 45 minutes to an hour before I can even think of eating. I just can't, my body rejects any thought of food. And when I eat I am not ravenous. On the other hand if I eat even a snack before I exercise (I have tried, just to have a little more fuel), my stomach feels not too good. So, am I from another planet? Is there anyone out there that has the same experience?

Cold water increases the metabolism...your body will actually work to warm it. It is my understanding that one gallon of ice cold water/day will burn an extra 100 calories simply in warming it, but don't quote me on the numbers...

Ok ... Seriously ... Not eating anything in the morning then working out DOES work. It all comes down to self-control guys. If you have that, working out in the morning burns the most fat. Sure, it does up your appetite, but that's showing you that your metabolism is increasing. I'm not saying Liz is wrong, I'm just saying there's more to it then that. You can eat before a work out, and sometimes, it's best depending on what you had the night before. But just have fun with it all. Don't be strict on yourself! Working out shouldn't be a chore, it's a way to better your life! Happy Trails!

I use the Access bar which is eaten on an empty stomach 15 minutes before your workout. It does have 120 calories of which 30 are fat calories.
