    3 weight-loss myths debunked

"I'm working so hard and I still can't lose weight." As a nutritionist who specializes in weight management, I've heard this a lot over the years. Yes, these people usually are working hard. Often too hard. One of the biggest mistakes people make when they're trying to shed pounds is to focus on the wrong things: false promises, unproven gimmicks, misguided perceptions about what it means to diet. (Twelve things you should focus on if you really want to lose weight.)

A smart, balanced approach to weight loss may not seem "sexy" or easy but getting caught up in weight-loss myths will only sabotage your success. Here are three top weight-loss myths, busted.

Myth: You can lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks. (What about other too-good-to-be-true-sounding claims? Our nutrition advisor Dr. Rachel Johnson weighs in.)
Truth: You probably can lose 10 pounds in two weeks if you crash diet, but you'll feel terrible-and most of the weight will return once you start eating normally. To truly lose 1 pound, you need to "eliminate" 3,500 calories-the amount stored in a pound of fat-by eating less and moving more. If you cut 500 calories (or cut 300 and burn 200 through exercise) every single day of the week, you'll lose about a pound a week. And that's real weight loss. (Take our 500-Calorie Dinner Challenge-and cut calories painlessly.)

Myth: If you exercise, you can eat as much as you want.
Truth: Unless you're working out like an Olympic athlete, to lose weight you'll still need to keep an eye on how many calories you're eating. "Calories in" add up much more quickly than "calories out." Consider this: two medium cookies cost you about 400 calories. To burn 400 calories, the average person needs to run or walk 4 miles. (Find 6 easy ways to sneak in your exercise.)

Myth: You should expect to be hungry while dieting.
Truth: If you cut calories randomly, you're probably going to feel hungry. On the other hand, if you plan out your day so that you're replenishing yourself with nutritious foods every three or four hours, you'll likely feel quite satisfied on significantly fewer calories. Aim to include a source of lean protein (e.g., skim milk, turkey) and fiber (e.g., hummus, carrots) in every meal and snack. The myth of not being able to lose 10 lbs in 2 weeks is a sweeping overgeneralization. My BMI is 39.5 and when you're that heavy, it's not uncommon to drop 10 or more pounds in the first two weeks of a diet. Not a crash diet, but a sensible plan.

Let's put it in perspective: I've been eating about 2,500 calories per day and have lost 6 lbs in 5 days.

Hi all, your relative weight is really not the only benchmark. Your lean body mass or % of body fat is. Muscle does weigh more than fat so ladies pls know that resistance training or body sculpting (as it's also called in order to not scare anyone off) is a must if you want to speed up your metabolism ongoing.

Pls also know that getting fitter and building some muscle won't MAKE YOU LARGER. Just the opposite is in fact true. Don't believe me? Just go to any gym and look at the fittest women there. Notice how small and tight their arms, waist and buns are. Sad to tell but their bustline will also get smaller but that's why God invented the boob job. LOL

Also, remember that if it took you yrs to get outta shape, you will not get bk into shape overnight. Lastly, you hear people say that when you stop working out the muscle you've gained will turn to "fat". Can't happen because there are muscle cells and fat cells and one can't become the other. They can grow or shrink but can't change. Now, if you stop working out however you will need to lower your caloric intake. I know, duh! Hope these help.

THANK YOU for tip #2. I wish more people would know that. I HATE it when people say that they can eat whatever they want because they exercise. Then they wonder why they're not losing weight... Or, they say, "yeah, I can eat whatever I want, to an extent." That's NOT "whatever you want"!!

"Losing 10 pounds in 2 weeks"
It's actually not too good to be true. Especially if you lose those 10 pounds in the first 2 weeks of a diet. I started dieting in May and the first 2 weeks I dropped 10 pounds, I have averaged losing anywhere from 2 to 3 pounds a week since then. I am not crash dieting, I am not starving myself, and I don't spend 7 days a week at the gym. I do watch what I eat, I've learned to control my portions, but I have learned that if I want a cookie I should have a cookie. That way I satisfy my craving and don't over eat later by depriving myself. Now 8 months later I am down 61 pounds and it feels good. Just remember when you stop losing weight (which you will cause your body gets use to the routine) you've got to change it up and don't get discouraged. I stopped losing weight for over a month! So eating right and working out for 30 to 45 minutes at least 3 or 4 days a week you can lose 2 to 3 pounds weekly. I'm proven fact of that. And I've lost it in a healthy way and have kept it off.

I think that i can eat whatever i want, actually....I am a high school cross country runner, and over the season i was running every day. now i am just building back up, but when you are working out a lot every day, you can eat what you want. pretty much everyone on my team does...

Gaileta, the chart sounds like a great tip. I'll have to make one of those... Fast food is one of my worst enemies, and I think being reminded of just how hard it is to work that off will be a big help.

I have to agree with this article. I never had a problem with weight until I hit my mid-40's. About 6 months ago I once again started dieting. My goal was to lose 35 pounds. I joined a gym and practically starved myself. Nothing!!! I was actually gaining weight. Starving doesn't work. So I hired a personal trainer and he showed me how to work out properly and how to eat properly. I ate 3 regular meals and had 3 snacks during the day. And the pounds started falling off. Incredibly, I was a size 14 and am now a size 8. I not only lost the weight (40 pounds) but I am toned and healthy. And I might add for a soon to be 55 year old woman I am looking hot!!

Finally, a reasonable yahoo article on sensible eating. Usually I just laugh at these and call the author an idiot, but it seems this time that this person did some research, then dumbed it down just enough to make sense to any average American. Kudos to you, Nicci Micco. My advice is much more complex and specific, and no one cares to listen to it. However, you have created a useful article that can help even the most lost causes.

i lost 6 pounds in 3 days because i started on a diet. i did not starve myself. all i ate was in the morning one apple, and at lunch turkey with fat free cheese sandwich with wheat bread, then for dinner 1 apple
and for the whole day i drank water. i did not feel hungry.... and then at night i ran on the treadmill for 1 hour and cardio workouts for 1 hour and then went to sleep... and i lost 25 pound in 1 month... good luck to everyone whos trying to lose weight... im still working out regularly and trying to lose 20 more pounds.. good luck~~

I stopped eating all but a few bites for dinner. I am a pretty healthy eater the rest of the day (very little fast food, lots of humus, cheese, crackers and salads), but after 6 or so I really stop eating. I go to bed hungry a lot but I am okay with that. Have lost 15 pounds, and have kept it off for almost 2 years. The only time I eat at night is if I go out to dinner, then I treat myself. Other days no way, I am a marathon runner and I still gain weight if I eat at night
    • A Yahoo! User  •  2 years 1 month ago
all of this is BS... i eat alot of fast foods with no exercise and gain no weight. I'm still light as a feather lol
    • bobd  •  2 years 1 month ago
One sentence in this article made more sense than anything I have ever read about weight loss and it made it all seem so simple. Lose 500 calories a day = 1 Lb weight loss per week.
      Thank you. And I will.

Some people (me included) have a body chemistry that causes them to be hungry all the time. When I eat healthy with the right portions I stay hungry 24/7. I can try spreading out the meals, but it does me no good. After I eat I am still hungry. I have tried eating "filling" foods and it makes no difference. In order to stay fit, I just have to accept the fact that I will be hungry all the time...

They always say snack every 3-4 hours and give examples of crappy tasting food! Hummus and carrots!!! EWWWW!!! Is there anything that tastes good that you can eat?????????
