4 Reasons to Avoid All Soda (Even Diet)

That innocent-looking can of soda pop-no matter what it's sweetened with-may be taking a toll on your immunity. Here's why:

    1. People who drink sodas instead of healthy beverages (think low-fat milk and pure fruit juice) are less likely to get adequate vitamin A, calcium, and magnesium. What's more, soda contains phosphoric acid that depletes calcium and magnesium. These two nutrients help keep your immunity operating at peak efficiency.

    2. Sodas containing high-fructose corn syrup also contain high levels of free radicals linked to tissue damage, the development of diabetes, and diabetic complications.

    3. Plastic soda (and water) bottles contain a toxic chemical called bisphenol A (BPA) that can leach from bottles into soda…into you. Emerging evidence links BPA to a myriad of maladies, including immune system depression. Public health experts recommend that we protect children from exposure to products containing BPA-especially those they consume or use every day.

    4. Diet soda actually contributes to weight gain. A study of 1,550 people concluded that people who drink diet soda have a 41 percent increased risk of being overweight or obese-for every can or bottle they drink per day! Turns out, any sweet taste signals body cells to store fat and carbohydrates, which makes you hungrier. Sweet tastes also promote insulin release, which blocks your body's ability to burn fat. The hard truth: No published study has ever proven that drinking diet soda will help you lose weight.

Fruit Juice is just as bad, if not worse than soda. Sticking some Vitamin C into a 150-200 calorie sugar loaded glass of OJ will make you a lot fatter than something with ZERO calories in it.

In fact, the writer is a moron... you can't gain any weight from ZERO calories. That is pretty much an fact.

Not all sodas contain phosphoric acid, but I think most dark colored ones (colas) do. Mountain Dew does not.

I drink diet soda purely as a substitute for sugar laden, high calorie regular soda. One or two a day. For my situation, the diet soda is absolutely better for me.

I need to give it up. I do enjoy a can a day while cooking dinner or when I am poolside but I notice I am hungry for sweets after my can is gone. Thanks for your encouragement to kick the can!

All "cold" sodas -- all bubbly drinks, including beer, champagne, etc.and gaseous "spring" water -- are deleterious to health. Here's why: when a cold liquid containing "gas" warms up, the gas pressure expands. Left in an open container, it will escape into the air, and the result is what we usually call "going flat." However, the stomach is more like a closed container. Other than an occasional belch, the only "release" for the increased pressure is to s-t-r-e-c-h the stomach. A stretched stomach means it takes a greater volume of food, or even ordinary liquid, for the feeling of being satiated, i.e. having eaten enough. Whether or not it is junk food or healthful food, it will be too much food, and that will put one on the road to obesity.

The brown coloring in sodas HAVE been proven to cause kidney stones which I have had many. Sadly that is why I have stopped drinking brown. Beer actually is better for me. Here s to your health

The best reason to not drink soda pop is that there isn't one good reason to drink it in the first place.

It has zero nutritional benefit; period!

Second of all it is a complete waste of money, and relatively speaking it is quite expensive; in particular when you buy it one can at a time or when you buy it by the glass in one of those big paint bucket sized cups at the 7/11.

I haven't drank soda in over two years but I do put the sugar-free drop-in flavors in my water... Does anyone know how they compare to diet soda?

Wow, even magazine writers love to use urban legends. BPA is found in hard plastic such as water bottle made for reuse, or baby bottles. Yes, it sounds scary, of course no one mentions this BPA scare is based on what scientists think, not what they have shown to be the case. BPA is not found in single use bottles like soda and water bottles. The truth is everyones body reacts differently to things. For example some people are allergic to peanuts, some are not. Let's get the facts straight before we publish, eah?

Arizona tea in little packets you can add to your water bottle are good tasting and good for you with green tea. Soda's have been known to cause weight gain around the middle for years!
