5 Bizarre Weight Loss Tricks that Work

    1. Sniff a banana, apple, or peppermint
You might feel silly, but it works. When Dr Alan R. Hirsch of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago tried this with 3,000 volunteers, he found that the more frequently people sniffed, the less hungry they were and the more weight they lost - an average of 30 lb each. One theory is that sniffing the food tricks the brain into thinking you're actually eating it. 2. Hang a mirror opposite your seat at the table. One study found that eating in front of mirrors slashed the amount people ate by nearly one-third. Seems having to look yourself in the eye reflects back some of your own inner standards and goals, and reminds you of why you're trying to lose weight in the first place.

    3. Surround yourself with blue
There's a good reason you won't see many fast-food restaurants decorated in blue: Believe it or not, the color blue functions as an appetite suppressant. So serve up dinner on blue plates, dress in blue while you eat, and cover your table with a blue tablecloth. Conversely, avoid red, yellow, and orange in your dining areas. Studies find they encourage eating.

    4. Shoot your food
Rather than writing down every morsel, take a picture of it, and file the photos on your phone or computer by date. A visual account of your consumption may help you curb your intake. "Snapping photos and then looking back at them can make people stop and think before indulging," nutritionist Joan Salge Blake says. It needn't be a big production: your cell phone will do. Think about it: there you are at the salad bar, making a plate of vegetables. Don't pat yourself on the back quite yet, though. A simple snapshot of your heaping dish may "show your extra helping of cheese or deep-fried croutons," Joan cautions. A visual reminder might be just enough to give you pause next time before you ladle on the blue cheese dressing. -- Joan is a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. 5. Tie yourself up
You could try fitness guru Valerie Orsoni's "Le Petit Secret": "A number of French women wear a ribbon around their waist and underneath their clothes when they go out for dinner. It keeps them conscious of the tummy-particularly if the ribbon starts to feel tighter as the evening goes on!"

Also, eat with your non dominant hand. It slows you way down and makes you feel fuller faster therefore you eat far less. A friend shared that trick and I managed to take off 16 stubborn pounds and have for 2 years kept it off. Also drink a full glass of water before each meal, you will also eat far less food.

Put some wet dog crap on a plate and set in in the fridge. Everytime you open the door the smell will make you lose your appetite.

One more 'trick' is to count how many times you chew each bite. It is best to chew each bite atleast 25 times. It really does help! Ofcourse all those skinny minnies out there can say "eat right" but some people do not have a choice or have other issues. Good luck.

i've tried that but the food turns to smoosh and can't stand to swallow that texture...LOL ok not comments out there about that.

Another thing that works well is self-control. However, this not a trait corperations want to encourage among consumers.

Give up the fast food, no sodas, water lots of it, and exercise!!!!! Fresh fruit, vegetables, and of course nuts. Can't go wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I lost 82 pounds by doing this, duh!

You are absolutely correct here! This plan worked/works for me! And, the best part is I feel better, too. Fast food and sodas wreck overall health, in the short and long run. I just send my son a care package with all whole-food snacks. They are out there and they are delicious.

I don't really eat fast food, I don't drink soda simply because I don't like it, but I love and DO drink lots of water. I still weigh in at over 180#....not working for me.

@Bosoxinny: I take it from your screen name that you are a Red Sox fan.

Stop being a (sedentary) fan, and get into the game.
Make Habit your friend, not your adversary.

(Daily) CALORIES IN have to be FEWER than (Daily) CALORIES BURNED.
Substitute (Weekly) (Monthly) or (Annual) as you see fit. (And FIT, you shall be.)

Best wishes. And Good Luck. Change is difficult.

I enjoyed laughing at the article and especially the comments, wow not much fowl language, we are getting better people!! Hey, what works for some wont work for others, but the psychological strategy behind some of these ideas, prove how powerful your brain is. Anyway, I lost 20 lbs from the end of August until the end of October with advice from a personal trainer, the eye of the tiger, and doing more than normal cardio:0 God bless you all.

    • Taurus  •  6 months ago
There must be a better way...seriously-taking photos, sniffing your food, hanging mirrors...there IS a better way....eat healthy, stay away from high carbs, trans fats and
sodium. Walk as much as you can-drink water when you're hungry or chew sugarless gum or both. This is ridiculous advice..this article.

if only people didn't have to lose weight in the first place......
    • Maria  •  6 months ago
Geez people, these are supposed to be unheard of tricks. Cut Yahoo some slack. Of course everyone knows to diet and exercise. I think these are supposed to be done in conjunction with.
    • Lorraine  •  6 months ago
Sit next to someone who farts the whole time your eating, that's a big-time appetite suppressant. Why do I always get stuck seated near someone at a restaurant who passes gas?
    • sarahlee  •  6 months ago
      these are all amusing
