5 Low Calorie Beers for St. Patrick's Day

By Mathue Johnson and Brandi Koskie - DietsInReview.com

Like many other holidays on our calendar, St. Patrick's is one that can quickly become a consumption fest if you're not careful. Traditionally green-dyed beer is consumed; for that matter, any variety of cold suds are consumed. This is one of those times when the phrase "all things in moderation" can be your ally. You can drink (responsibly!), enjoy the holiday and not feel guilty about it. Just don't forget that alcohol packs a punch of empty calories; calories that impact your daily consumption and any weight loss goals.

Without sacrificing the calories for wholesome foods throughout the day, build a drink or two in to your calorie budget on March 17 if you plan to imbibe with friends. While Irish favorites like a Guinness Extra Stout will set you back 104 calories and a Harp serves up 153 calories, not to mention the pub food, you might be wishing for a lower calorie option from the bar.

Try these lower-calorie beers for St. Patrick's Day instead of feeling green with envy as your friends enjoy a few cold ones wherever you're celebrating!

These nutrition stats are based on a 12 oz. serving; none of these contain fat.

    1. Miller 64: Contains 64 calories and 2.4 grams of carbohydrates
    2. Natural Light: Contains 95 calories and 3.2 grams of carbohydrates
    3. Amstel Light: Contains 95 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates
    4. Michelob Ultra: Contains 96 calories and 3 grams of carbohydrates
    5. Coors Light: Contains 102 calories and 11.3 grams of carbohydrates

The bbers listed are nasty watered down beers... yuck! And really, all it takes is 1 Guinness to get me feeling good so I'll pass on the "girly beers" thank you!!

Oh, sure. And maybe we could all have a nice glass of water for St. Patrick's day instead. That would be nice and healthy.

None of these beers are Irish, which, I believe, is one of the reasons for the celebration. They also taste like flavored water. I would like to point out that the 104 calories of Guinness Extra Stout is only two more calories than the Coors Light! I recommend eating healthy at home, and just drinking good beer at the pub.

If you normally eat healthy and don't pig out, there's no reason not to splurge on a full calorie beer. It's pretty silly to freak out about a Guinness or two on St. Patrick's Day.

However, if you're planning to go running that marathon - remember that alcohol screws up your liver's ability to produce glycogen for up to 48hrs afterward.
