5 Reasons Why It's a Good Idea to Call in Sick

http://blog.travelpost.com/wp-content/sneezing.jpgDo you dread calling in sick? Whether it's the fear of a judgmental boss or just concerns about missing out on important happenings, health experts want to put you at ease. There are times when making the call is a must. Confused about whether staying home is a good idea? Here are five signs that a sick day is in order...

According to a recent Glamour.com poll, only 21 percent of readers say they make a point to stay home when they're sick. The rest of you do sometimes or not at all.

Guys! The world will not end if you stay home and a.) rest and recover so you can get well again, and b.) prevent the spread of your germs to others.

But, I know it can be confusing about whether a sick day is in order--especially at 6 a.m. Here are five signs, from the experts at WebMD, that you need to make the call to your boss and head back to bed:

    1. If you wake up feel pretty icky with a sore throat and the sniffles (which weren't there yesterday). Health experts say that the first few hours/days of a virus tend to be the most contagious, so spare your co-workers your germs and keep your sneezy self at home until the following day.

    2. If you're taking medications that may (even slightly) impair your ability to do a good job. Whether it's a prescription medication or just over-the-counter cold meds that makes you feel like a space cadet, if the medicine you're taking is impairing you in any way, it's best to stay home.

    3. If you have a bad sinus infection. Experts say that sinus infections can cause yellow or green nasal discharge, jaw pain, facial pain, and headaches--all of which are a major blow to concentration. Your best bet? Stay home and use your neti pot, and maybe venture out, but only to see your doctor.

    4. If you have pink eye. The majority of "pink eye" is viral and clears up on its own in about 24 to 48 hours. Other cases are bacterial pink eye, and you need antibiotic eye drops from your doc. Both, however, are extremely contagious, so unless you want dirty looks from your office mates, better stay home!

    5. Bad back pain. You may feel like a wimp calling in sick because your back hurts, but don't! Experts say sitting at a desk all day can actually aggravate your back and make the pain worse. Instead, after a mega back spasm, spend the day at home taking it easy.

Do you abide by these "rules"? Or do you tend to dread calling in sick?

Missing days other than sick/personal/vacation does not look good in our office. It could be held against you when your review comes around.

My biggest issue is actually going back to work before I should. I've called out sick only to go in the next day because I feel better and then relapse to worse than I was before and needing to take off two more days. Had I just stayed out two consecutive days I probably wouldn't have relapsed and could just be done with it. I'm working on it...

My employer is urging us to call in sick this year, since we work with kids, in hopes of not getting hit by the swine flu too hard. And you better believe that I will if I get sick.

why dont all you people take precautions and strenghthen your immune systems so you dont get sick instead of being brain washed into the norm...?..O, because that would take a brain to think of such a thing...

I would love to see an employer make a list of times to call in sick, rather than a group of doctors. I know if I were to call in and give any of these reasons other than the back pain my employer would ask me to just not come in ever again.

I am a hair stylist and unless I am going to throw up on my client or endanger them in any way... I do not call in sick. Normally they appreciate it. Nobody likes when they have an appointment and their stylist isn't there.

me and my family all work with the public. i in a preschool and brother and boyfriend in stores, we do not have the option to call in sick, either we go and throw up there so we can go home sick or do the best we can with what we got.

I had a job that really didn't understand breaks let along sick days, and this was in the health care sector working with the elderly oh and with a limited staff.....

My boss has made a point to say "Try to come in no matter what, if we see that you're sick, we'll send you home." I've driven myself home pretty sick a couple times. Sort of rediculous.

In high school I used to actually be happy when I got sick. Who cares if you feel crummy if you can watch television and eat ice cream all day with no guilt? And no school! Yes! But alas, in a major where all classes are small enough for your presence to be missed, as a college student I've often wondered if there should be regulation towards absence limitations. This year almost every professor said something along the lines of: "This is supposed to be a hard flu season, so if you think you might even possibly sick, please stay home. Moving on to page three of the syllabus, there is a two absence limit for this class and every absence beyond that will take a point off your grade." Seriously? It's only week six, and due to my week four being spent with a 102 fever, I'm already at or over my limit for every class. Sigh.

You know, it really pees me off the way they ALWAYS show a woman on these ads because I am a 26-year-old female and have not been sick in YEARS!!! Why is it always women who are shown blowing their nose?!? Are the people who take these pictures a bunch of perverted heterosexual males with some kind of a snot fetish or something?!? Stop showing a woman everytime you advertise things that deal with colds and being sick because a woman who is childless and doesn't work outside the home can be so healthy that she doesn't even need to have any kind of cold medicine in the house and doesn't even worry for a split second that she'll get sick this year. The only reason women even get sick at all is because they're trying to fulfil MEN's roles of monetary provider while still having kids, and you can't have it both ways. Either be a healthy stay-at-home mom whose children are homeschooled or don't have kids at all and I guarantee there would be much fewer colds and flus going around in this world.

Your boss can not ask you what's wrong when you call in sick,so if you don't feel well and need a day off take it. Don't let some job cost your your health and well being.

      Dear Another hockey fan,

I think it is great do do what you can to be healthy, but trust me just because you haven't had the cold or flu/fever in over fifteen years does not mean you are not susceptible to illness. My husband is just like you...he never gets sick-had not one cold or flu, or anything for 10 years....then wham he had a stomach pain, and then that stomach pain went into his back, and he developed a fever-finally after three days of my "nagging" him that he needed to go the hospital. He finally went. Yeah his appendix had ruptured, and he sat with it for three days-because "He was healthy" and " He Never got sick" comments he made about himself. So I would reconsider the idea of just "upping" your immune system and you will avoid sickness altogether. Yeah it does not always work that way.

I call in sick when ever I need to... I don't care if a boss is judgemental... I have sinus problems due to the air quality... and if I have a sinus infection or think one is coming on I will stay home... I am more of use well than I am sick..

      Dear Chad S,

Your comment " Why don't you all you people take precautions and strengthen your immune systems so you don't get sick"...hm I would like to see your medical degree please? Because guess what-I'd bet you don't have one. Sure trying to improve your immune system is a great idea. But everyone has the potential for illness. I would think a little about what you are implying.

      Thanks,

      Girl with realistic ideals.

Haha, pink eye. Every time I hear someone say that or read it I remember that South Park special where Kenny got a blood transfusion of Worcestershire sauce, turned into a zombie, and everyone just thought there was an epidemic of pink eye going around. I'm positive that America wouldn't last long if the zombie apocalypse happened during this economic crises. Everyone would be too afraid to call off work for fear of losing their job and spread the T virus everywhere.

I am a registered nurse and have had it both ways when talking about using sick days. My current employer calls it "earned benefit time" and is much more understanding than my last. The old employer gave me a bad review for "using too much sick time" and she hadn't even researched why I had been out so much that year. I was out 3 days for my father's funeral, two days for Jury duty, one day she approved for a medical appt. out of town, and one day I called in sick. Like she even cared to know the truth, she just was being true to her management style, not caring about anyone but herself. This employer wants us to use our EBT time and even puts up posters about "do you need a day off", "don't come to work if you have sniffles" and stuff like that. Just had my yearly review with this employer and got rave reviews even with using ALL my EBT time this past year and that amounted to 21 days which included vacation, sick days, and some time for out patient wrist surgery. No repercussions with this employer and that's the way it should be.................

I never call in sick. Actually I never call in at all.. and if I take a vacation my boss knows months in advance. More often then not though I just schedule vacations around those three-day weekends we get four or five times during the year.

I get horrrrrible mirgranes... to the point that I need to be rushed to the ER for them. One of the meds I was prescribed makes me stiff sometimes and unable to focus or see strait. MY BOSS STILL MADE ME COME IN!!!!! SOME BOSSES JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND OR CARE TO EVEN TRY.
