5 Things Women Are Good at (but They Don't Even Know It!)

By April Daniels Husser, SELF magazine

It's widely understood that there are some things women just naturally do better than men, like tolerate colds (just ask any woman who's ever nursed her guy through the "man flu") and find lost objects (just ask your mom!). But according to a recent study, we are better at something that might surprise you and the man in your life ... parking cars!

The study, conducted by a U.K.-based car park firm, covertly observed 2,500 drivers in 700 parking lots and rated these seven key characteristics of parking styles: appropriate space-finding speed; pre-parking pose; reverse into space; forward into space; speed of maneuver; reposition shuffle; central finish.

Women scored higher on six of the seven -- but when researchers questioned women drivers, only one-fifth (18 percent) thought they were better parkers than men and less than a third (28 percent) believed they were better parkers than their partners. This got us thinking: What else are women great at but probably don't even know it? Here are four more things you can add to your list of skills:

Handling job interview stress. The next time you're feeling anxious before a big interview, take heart. According to new research from the University of Western Ontario, while women may feel more anxiety and stress before meeting with a prospective employer, they're more likely than men to cope with that stress and, in turn, perform better during the interview. The reason for this, say researchers, is women are more likely to find productive ways of adapting to their stress -- calling loved ones for support, preparing thoroughly, etc. -- while men are more likely to try to ignore their anxiety.

Investing. Oh yes, that's right. When it comes to money matters, a study done by Barclays Wealth and Ledbury Research found that women make better investors than men. Why? In a nutshell, women tend not to take as many foolish risks as men. Women buy, hold and make money. The study found that men are more likely to self-identify as "risk-takers" while women were shown to place a high value on self-control. The end result? Women make more money from their smart, strategic investment choices.

Tasting beer! According to Dan Abrams, who wrote an entire book on all the things women do better than men (it's called Man Down: Proof Beyond a Reasonable Doubt That Women Are Better Cops, Drivers, Gamblers, Spies, World Leaders, Beer Tasters, Hedge Fund Managers, and Just About Everything Else, if you're looking for a bedside read that will no doubt bug the heck out of your man), research proves that not only do women have a better sense of smell than men do, but we're more likely to have a greater number of more-sensitive taste buds. Ergo, we can taste better!

Staying healthy. Not only do women tend to eat a healthier diet than men do (a study of 14,000 Americans conducted by the University of Minnesota found that men are more likely to eat fast food and pizza, while women are more likely to go for fruits and veggies), we have stronger natural immune systems. A study from McGill University found that estrogen plays a part in boosting our immune systems, and more recent research from Ghent University in Belgium discovered that we can thank the MicroRNAs on our X chromosomes for giving us stronger natural immune systems. Just don't tell your guy about this the next time you get a cold, or he'll never bring you tea in bed again!

Couldn't they just say some and not make it all women vs all men? I am a man and I can repair my car, shoot guns, build things, change diapers, iron clothes, chop wood, cook, etc. It depends on the individual person, enough with the battle of the sexes.
      • stacy 2 months ago
I can do all of that and talk on the phone at the same time! ;) LOL

truer words have never been spoken. who cares what women are better at than men and vice versa? does it really matter?
      • Linda 2 months ago
you are right. We get sick of the battle of the sexes. We can all do things equally well in most cases. And it's all individual.

I must be a girl then. reason why- when my girlfriend is driving and she needs to parallel park, i have to get out and do it for her, we both freak out in job interviews, im always saving money she blows hers within days of getting the pay check, she hates the taste of beer, i try all sorts of beer and love them, and i cook the food she eats. Im not saying males are better, just saying that these studies and stupid gender wars are dumb. We are adults now, i thought we grew up......

        Mine can't back up period.....
      • HO LIN WON 2 months ago
Another reason. My wife will drive 5 miles to save 2 cents a gallon on gas. Then she will circle a shopping mall parking lot 3 or 4 times to get closer to the mall entrance. Driving 1 or 2 miles. Then when she finally finds a spot that is 3 or 4 spots from the mall entrance she sees a person leaving a front row spot, so we drive another qt mile to get there.

Admitting that "you're the girl" is the first step..... good luck to you. :)

Can you imagine the outrage if a story was plastered on any media if the reported results were reversed? It would immediately be called sexist, biased and flawed.
      • Forever Alone 2 months ago
There's no need to have such a story. Men love to talk about how they are better than everyone else every chance they get! The world already knows. There are exceptions to the rule, of course, but these articles wouldn't happen if some neanderthals would stop telling the world how useless women are.
      • Vernon 2 months ago
No wonder your handle is "Forever Alone." Geez. Bitter a little? Maybe you should change it to "Forever a Shrew!" What a sexist POS you must be.
      • hbk 2 months ago
        Completely agree Steelerman...
    • Karl S  •  2 months ago
For once I would like to see a woman AND a man collaborate to write articles like these. Otherwise it just looks biased.
    • David I  •  2 months ago
You left out 'remembering things men did five years ago at their mothers on New Years'.
    • Eliza  •  2 months ago
They forget the biggest key element: depends on the guy and depends on the girl. We're human. Stop putting sterotypes up, everyone is different
    • ray  •  2 months ago
well boys and girls, from what i have seen-none of us are very good at parking---just sayin
    • nikki  •  Los Angeles, California  •  2 months ago
This article is so pointless. How can you even test any of these. Every person is different Yahoo.

        Your cute!
      • Vernon 2 months ago
        You got that right, Nikki.
      • Joseph 2 months ago
How can you test these? By statistics.

They used to say that married men lived longer. Then they realized it just seemed a lot longer.
    • It's Me  •  2 months ago
To the feminists out there: different does not mean less, and equal sure doesn't mean better. We're supposed to be different, and I'm glad as a woman I can appreciate the differences and not feel threatened.

Research doesn't prove anything, it indicates or supports a claim, idiot.
    • Cameron B  •  2 months ago
Ya know, it's funny.... While I have seen a large number of men be attacked and insulted for not proactively doing the dishes, I have yet to see a woman be badgered for failing to to change her own oil.

Men are good at protecting woman...from..other men and woman..
    • Zaruk Acerbus  •  Tampa, Florida  •  2 months ago
How sad that, in the year 2012 AD, we still identify people as completely homogenous groups instead of the individuals they are. Each single human is capable of something different, and is going to better and some things and worse at others. Group statistics should mean nothing because we don't deal with groups on a daily basis, but with individual people.

What a dumb article....Apparently Yahoo needed some misinformation filler….I know women and men that do some of the things listed well and some that don’t do them well…clumping it all together as if a specific gender can taste beer or handles job interview stress, for instance, better than the other gender is beyond ridiculous and isn’t just horrible reporting its sexist!!!
