5 Things You Need to Know About Dieting

Shape sets the record straight on what fills you up, what trims you down and how to know when a miracle diet is too good to be true.

Know this: It's not the fat in foods that makes you feel full.
That greasy cheeseburger will leave you feeling full all day, so it's worth the splurge, right? Wrong! Fat is the slowest food component to clear the stomach, so for years it was assumed that fatty foods slowed digestion and kept you feeling full longer. Recent research proves the proportion of sugar and fat has little or no differences in satiety ratings.

In fact, protein tends to leave people feeling more satisfied than either carbs or fat. The problem with fat is that it has more than twice the calories of protein or carbs.

To eat more and weigh less, reach for foods high in fiber, like fruits and veggies and whole grains. Fiber and whole grains affect feelings of fullness and satisfaction. We don't know exactly why, but fiber and whole grains could affect the hormones that send the signal to your brain that you've had enough to eat.

Know this: Missing meals is not a good way to drop pounds.
Research has repeatedly shown that people who eat at regular intervals, starting with breakfast, are better nourished, think more clearly and report fewer mood swings than those who eat erratically. Meal skippers are more prone to weight problems probably because once they do eat, they eat too much of all the wrong stuff. People often think they can save calories by skipping meals, but if they kept food journals they'd find that they more than make up for those saved calories at other times of the day.

Once meal skippers do eat, they find it very difficult to stop, consuming way more calories than people who eat more frequently. Researchers at the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) report that spacing food evenly throughout the day is key to weight-loss success. Weight maintainers eat every four to five hours, regardless of whether it's a weekday, weekend or holiday.

Know this: There are good and bad foods.
You may have heard that there are no good foods or bad foods, only good and bad diets. Nutritionally, a potato chip can't hold a candle to a baked potato. We usually don't have a problem treating ourselves to those tasty foods, so to say there are no bad foods might be a license for some people to eat anything whenever they want.

If having cookies in the house triggers a person to binge, then that food could be a problem simply because it results in unhealthy behaviors. Enjoy bad foods only once in a while and in reasonable portions but always stock your kitchen with good foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole-grain breads.

Know this: Low-carb diets don't flush calories from the body.
Proponents of low-carb diets claim you can excrete fat fragments (called ketones) in urine on this type of diet, essentially flushing calories out. But a study at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg found no correlation between urinary ketone levels and weight change in women on low-carb diets.

Carb cutters restrict so many foods that are normally accompanied by fat, they end up slashing calories overall. The initial rapid weight loss some carb cutters experience is caused by the body draining glycogen stores for energy. With each gram of glycogen used, 3 grams of water are released, with the result being a rapid loss in weight due to increased urination. After about 10-14 days, increased urination ends and so does the rapid weight-loss phase.

Know this: Eating healthfully can save you money.
With a little planning, eating well can actually cost less than typical fast-food fare. Are you surprised? A study at the Mary Imogene Bassett Research Institute in Cooperstown, N.Y., found that a person who follows a heart-healthy diet can reduce her grocery bill by up to $8 a week. That translates to an annual savings of $416 a year for a single person or $1,664 for a family of four. Granted, wild salmon and imported olive oil cost more than a Happy Meal, but you need to factor in the hidden costs of a diet that is high in fat.

More than half of all Americans eat too much, with the extra pounds costing about $400 per person in added health-care bills, not to mention the more than $30 billion spent annually in this country on weight-loss products and services.

Pound for pound, health-boosting whole foods are a lot cheaper than fast-food fare. To help pare down your grocery bill, swap legumes for meat products; buy less-expensive produce such as apples, oranges, carrots, spinach and cabbage; and purchase whole grains like oatmeal, rice and bulgur in bulk.

This is why DOCTORS, not magazines, should write articles about weight loss. This seems to be more anti-lowcarb propaganda than it does real advice.

With any diet, you can't eat everything you want. Even Atkins said you should feel satisfied, it wasn't a license to eat anything and everything without carbs. You are even only supposed to have three packets of no calorie sweetener.

Oh, and ketones are not calories. My god. They are the byproduct of burning body fat for fuel. When the brain uses ketones instead of glucose, it suppresses appetite. Ketogenic diets were also once used to help control epilepsy in children. People who eat a high fat, low carb diet lose weight, not gain it.

Also there are just as many studies done to show that Atkins is heart healthy for women. People also say that any weight lost on low carb diets is regained - but so is weight lost on every other diet out there too.

Here's the thing. If you take ANY kind of calorie out of your normal diet, you're going to lose weight. Whether it's fat, protein, or carbs. Without *some* fat our body isn't going to absorb fat soluble vitamins.

This article is interesting. I actually lost 15 pounds on a low-carb diet. Everyone's body responds differently to subtle and not-so subtle changes in the diet. The bottom line is eat healthy - plenty of vegetables, plenty of fruit, plenty of water, lean proteins, no refined sugars, no deep fried foods, no processed foods, reduce alcohol and caffeine consumption. These are tips that really helped me lose the weight after I had my baby...and I gained a massive amount of weight. My husband used to moo at me everytime I walked by. I decided to take control of my life. I got on line and started using the weight loss and fitness tools found on Yahoo, MSN, and Fatblastzone.com. Now, I am in the best shape I've ever been in my entire life and my body is more shaplier.

Someone born yesterday wrote this thing, right? Someone who never read an article about weight loss in her whole life.

also, diets DO NOT WORK might be a good one to know

Do you want to be "lite" or loose fat? Missing meals will cause one to loose weight, but more than likely you are loosing just as much if not more lean muscle mass as you are fat. The body is a wonderful efficient thing and we are wired to prevent starvation during periods of scarce food. The best way to loose fat and get lean is to eat often at a calorie level just below what you need. Then you "fake" the body into believing there is plenty of food around and it burns fat primarily. Frequent small meals comprised of balanced Protien/Carb/Fat is the key.

      Exercise! It burns fat!

There is no one way of eating that is right for everyone. Some people are more sensitive to carbs. Others are more weight sensitive to fat. I happen to do very well on a lower carb diet. The misconception about low carb diets is that all that is eaten is steak and bacon in mass quanities and that all carbs are forbidden. That couldn't be further from the truth. When done correctly by someone who is carb-sensitive low carb is completely healthy. It is adequate protien from meats, nuts, ect, not stuffing one's face with steak and bacon all day. And carbs are not forbidden. Sugar, white flour and starches, yes, but there is nothing in those things that are needed or healthy.

Like someone else who posted about eating low carb I did low carb for a period of time. I lost over 50 lbs. and felt better than I ever have in my life. My cholestorol changed to a healthy level in all categories. My triglycerides went from dangerously high levels to normal. Like the other person who posted the same type of stats I looked at it as a diet and when I stopped I gained it all back.

I lost 100 lbs when I removed starches and sugars from my diet. I lost almost a pound a day for the first 2 months! Every diet causes water loss in the beginning- but studies prove that a low-glycemic diet takes the weight off faster and with fewer cravings and appetite issues than any other type of diet. Grain is NOT a healthy food... read "The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human race" by anthropologist Jared Diamond-- grains have only been part of the human diet for a VERY small fraction of human existence. The other pluses to a low-glycemic diet are the curing of acne, depression, metabolic syndrome, GERD, autoimmune issues and on and on. Grains and sugars are toxic to us and the sooner we stop telling people that they're "healthy in moderation" and that "eating them whole" is the key, the sooner our society will heal. ~Huntress

Ya know, you can write an article everyday about how to loose
wieght, and people read them, they just dont do what it takes.
You cant stop a person from drinking, and you cant stop a person
from eating unless they want too. With all the info out there,
there are more overwieght people and children than ever before.
I've wieghed the same my 56 years. I've never liked sugar, or any
of the white stuff and have always loved my fruits and veggies,
and I exercise everyday. Its been my lifestlye and thats the key.
You need to change your lifestyle for any wieghtloss plan to work.

Psst... don't know if you got the memo, but the fat hypothesis has been debunked... Eat all the bacon you need, people!

Just keep your grocery cart out of the middle of the store (keep to the veggies, dairy, fruits, and whole grains) and you'll most likely be fine. Oh, and please get some exercise.

Some fun stuff I recently learned: HDL cholesterol is good for you, LDL is not as good for you. The thing they don't tell you is that VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) is the worst for you and is the best indicator for heart disease. LDL goes down when your fat intake goes down, but, if you increase your carb intake (esp. by using refined carbs) because of a lower fat intake, the VLDL will rise causing more harm than an increased fat intake.

Tell you anything? It tells you that carbs are not better for you than fat, and quite buying crappy "Food" with multiple ingredients. If the thing has one ingredient, be it Milk, Eggs, Squash, Pumpkin, etc, it's probably better for you than something containing 10 different ingredients you can't say or spell. Just do it all in moderation!

I did say to get some exercise too, right?

Count calories, eat right, and exercise. Burn more than you consume. Time and time again, these stupid articles come out but they still don't tell you what you need to hear.

Not eating breakfast or lunch b/c of some claim of longevity?
Fruits and whole grains don't contain fiber?
      A milkshake for dinner?

i was first diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic, then shifted to another category as i am insulin deficient as well as resistant to...so i have diabetes type 1.5, otherwise known as LADA. yesterday my doc told me it really wasn't considered a diabetes ''type'' at my HMO, and said that because my insulin shots are not working properly that i have to eat meals totaling only 40 carbs per meal...is she nuts or what? how can someone survive on a 40 carb meal? if i want to have a drink of cranberry juice with lunch, that 8oz drink alone is 30 carbs. any real doc advice appreciated.

This article is total crap. There is not one shred of evidence to support any of this. This is typical of yahoo.
I am however, absolutely stunned and impressed with how smart so many of the people commenting on here are. I have read several posts debunking this article. Many posts going over lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in great detail. It seems like the vast majority at least understand the basics. Someone even mentioned the movie Fat Head, which is great for debunking big food with evidence from peer reviewed scientific papers.
Let me also make another recommendation for people. Read the book "Good Calorie, Bad Calorie", by Gary Taubes. It explains this in detail and sites hundreds of peer reviewed studies as evidence.
Yahoo is a just a shill for big food. They are the people who like to trade our health and longevity for BIG PROFIT$$$.
So, well done fellow commentators! You have proven you are smarter than the article's author and the general public is catching on to what the evidence actually shows.

All these morons who think they are expert in everything, who wants to exploit people with their garbage health advice. Shape Magazine you are in ANY shape to give advice to anybody, so buzz off!
    • Joan  •  2 years 11 months ago
I think this article is useless.
Basically eat balanced and exercise....WOW, we would have never guessed that advice.
Most of us know plenty about foods and diets....so please stop assuming we are all dumb and walking around without a clue .

Jeanne B, I am sorry to say this, but your doctor is right. Some doctors are clueless on diet. Yours knows what she is talking about. Hold onto her. I eat less than 40 carbs per meal. That is just to maintain. When I was loosing weight, I was eating 60 to 80 carbs per day. There were times when I ate 20 per day.

Regardless the carb count, fruit juice will spike your blood sugar which will damage your vascular system due to your lack of insulin. You should eat mostly meat, nuts and veggies and a little fruit. Berries you can eat all you want. Other fruit keep it to a piece a day. Grains should be minimal. Stuff like white rice, potatoes and corn should be eliminated due to blood sugar impact.

Finally, trust me on this, you do not want to take insulin. It can be a downward spiral for anyone other than type 1 diabetics. This is because of the insulin resistance you would develop.

So, bottom line, listen to your doctor, she sounds brilliant to me.

These are really helpful. Didn't know that about fat and protein.
Eating healthy foods is also more cost effective because a healtheir body means less illness over the course of your lifetime. If you eat fast and cheap you will live a fast and cheap life. I'd like to think we're all worth more than that.
I can't afford the organic extra virgin olive oil or the wild salmon, but I improvise with less expensive brand of cold pressed olive oil and yes, I do buy the farm raised salmon because I figure that it's better than no salmon at all and it's not something I do regularly and when I go out to eat I order the real deal.
      Do the best you can.
    • krissy  •  2 years 11 months ago
wish i knew why they ALWAYS say the best way to lose weight is to eat every meal especially breakfast-- when for some unknown reason when i eat a normal lunch and dinner and skip breakfast (i'm just not hungry in the am) i stay thin, and when i eat breakfast, lunch & dinner i gain weight! (bad advice i know, but it's just how it is!) i'm hungry all day long when i start it out w/ breakfast, and not so hungry when i don't.
