5 ways to limit liquid calories

Now that it's starting to feel like fall, I can't wait to get my hands on a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks. But a grande made with whole milk and topped with whipped cream has a whopping 410 calories-crazy, right?

Even if you go "skinny" (made with non-fat milk), your Pumpkin Spice Latte is still 260 calories. That's not a ton of calories, but ordering one just a few times a week when I need an afternoon pick-me-up adds more than 1,000 calories into my week-and that's just from coffee! When you factor in a morning glass of juice and a couple of happy hour cocktails, those weekly drink calories sure add up!

But no way am I cutting out my caffeine fix. Instead, I've implemented some rules so I don't overload my diet with beverage calories. Here's how I think before I drink.

    I drink in the morning
I drink most of my caloric beverages, like iced coffee and juice, early in the day when I'm most active and more likely to burn off the calories throughout the rest of the day.

I stick to 100% fruit juice
Some juices are packed with sugar, so I make sure to read labels and select ones that are 100% fruit juice to cut out empty calories from extra sugar. Plus, 100% juices are rich in disease-fighting antioxidants.

    I savor each sip
I just can't say no to whipped cream on top of my Pumpkin Spice Latte so I make sure to enjoy ever single sip of this diet splurge. But I also take steps to whittle down its calorie count. I order mine made with soymilk, which retains the creaminess of the drink without all of the fat of whole milk. I also order my fancy latte all by itself; if I had it along with a meal or a snack I wouldn't realize how many calories it has in it.

    I pace myself

When it comes to a glass of wine or a beer, I try to drink a glass of water between rounds. This way I consume fewer calories without missing out on any of the fun. Plus, I stay hydrated at the same time.

I add some zing to plain water
I drink a lot of water throughout the day, but it can get really boring. To spice up my H2O, I experiment with adding fresh ingredients, such as cucumber and orange slices, or even fresh herbs, like basil and mint.

If you watch your diet close enough then this is not something you have to consider. You can have half a glass of juice mixed with water per day. You may have coffee and tea every day as long as you watch your diet close enough.

A lot of the calories in starbucks drinks comes from the sugary syrups. I have gotten myself used to less sweet drinks and always order my drinks now with only one pump of syrup. A grande normally comes with 4 I think. And if I want it to taste sweeter I get that one pump with a tall. Or if I want a lot I get that one pump with a venti.

If you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) it would be worth it to go to "soy and your thyroid" and learn how soy affects it!! A real eye opener! It's (soy) apparently isn't as good for you as you think it is!!!! Soy milk for babies is asking for problems, it seems, too!!! Please do some research and read!!!!

I get a tall order with sugar-free syrup non-fat milk and non-whip. 110 Calories. I personally LOVE the pumpkin spice and wait all year... too bad they don't make it in sugar free, however I liked someone's idea of just getting one or two pumps instead of four. If it's not sweet enough you can always add some artificial sweetener and sprinkle some cinnamon.

I'm actually gonna start making it at home. Torani has sugar free syrups, pumpkin spice included! I use Almond milk, it has less calories than soy or even skim milk, plus it has a sweet, creamy flavor (almonds are often used in desserts)., Brew some strong coffee or espresso, ad two cups of almond milk, and sugar free torani pumpkin spice, and you have the equivalent of a starbucks grande(16 oz) pumpkin spice latte for only 120 calories!! (as opposed to 270 for starbucks)

Like some said, sugary coffee drinks are dessert-type treats, and should be treated as such. If I want to get caffeinated, I order espresso shots and ad skim milk, or just drink it at home. If I want my much-loved pumpkin spice latte, I make sure it's some special.

Wow, this lady gets paid to write common sense dribble? This article would have been topical 15-20 years ago. To "joy" ,"Eryn" and "You": everything in moderation is a very relevant phrase here. Try exercise and you won't have to micro manage calories.

That is why I only drink Coffee Primero. It is so smooth I don't have to add any cream or sugar to it.

Interesting article and nice tips (especially the water :).
Actually, the water thing reminded me: One of my friends wasn't too big on drinking water, but one day just drank the whole amount and lost about five pounds (although she was on the bigger side so it probably wouldn't have that effect for most people).
Yeah, 100% fruit juice isn't 100% unless it isn't from concentrate (i.e. five apples in one tiny juice box): That's one of the nice things about the label organic.

This is retarded. Like Joy said... The way to limit liquid calories is to.... NOT DRINK THEM! I dont drink anything besides water and a glass of skim milk! Even "juice" that people think is "healthy" fro the store is usually 100 calories for 8 oz.... and nobody only drinks 8 oz.

I wish that someone would make up their minds. One week 'this' is BAD for you, a few weeks later 'this' is GOOD for you. Whether the item is coffee, sodapop, or some other necessity I guess it just depends on what is being pushed as to what is good or bad for you at any given time. I even saw in one report where the guy was recommending - eat this instead of that because of the lower calories and yet a few inches above he same item that was recommended was said to be VERY BAD because of something else. In my 66 years I have seen this kind of stuff going on all the time. Have you ever noticed when it is 'good' for you thats when the companies that make the product have specials on it or have an excess of it and need to make it look good so that it was bought up.

Liquid calories are useless (except for milk in my opinion)

you don't need juice because you don't get all the benefits of eating a whole fruit, you only get the sugars.
and you don't need coffee. trust me, people don't die because of a coffee deficiency.

i drink a glass of milk in the morning and only water for the rest of the day.

Thank you. My daughter found out that the hard way, just like I did
years ago. Smoothie King was the downfall, with loaded sugars that
spiked our glucose levels and we actually gained weight on most of
their so called healthy smoothies. There are only one or two smoothies in the whole place that are safe for people with glucose problems or diabetics or others on a sugar restricted diet. So ladies, eating is not over rated, eat your fresh fruits and veggies and you will be healthier for it. Eat ginger snaps as a snack, way healthier if you have to have sweets, and use apple cider vinegar every day or lemon juice into a tall glass of water. Make sure to brush those choppers though, as the acids in those will cause tooth enamel to break down.
Have a happy and healthy fall and eat LOTS AND LOTS OF PUMPKIN AND SWEET POTATOES.

A lot of people don't realize how bad coffee drinks are for you. I worked at a coffee shop & had a woman come in and say I need something healthy. So I offered her a sugar free late with skim and looked at me like I was crazy. She wanted a frappe type drink and then said to me, "It's okay, I'm not drinking any other calories today. I'm just having water." One Frappe has enough calories for a whole day! And black coffee of course is fine, but most people don't want black coffee. They want a little bit of coffee w their sugar.

It's so easy to drink calories, and they have basically no food value. I stick mainly to water,
diet sodas, decaf tea, plain decaf coffee and fat free milk.

The fact is, a surprising amount of obesity problems stem from the beverages that often add 1200 to 1500 more calories a day to a diet. Also, the body needs water, and when water is altered, the body doesn't get the needed benefits. Drinking only water is a painless way to not change eating habits and dump a lot of weight. Really, try it.

To the guy knocking coffee - take that back, man! A cup of black coffee contains virtually no calories.
