5 Ways to Stick to Your Workout

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/gym%20rat.jpgWhy is it so hard to stick to a workout routine? Because we're not working out for the right reasons, say researchers. Scientists at London Metropolitan University found that people stopped going to the gym after three to six months if they were doing it to lose weight or look better. Those who stuck with it: They had internal motivations, like less stress or liking the buzz they got from a cardio routine. Some other things to consider:

    • Find your favorites. Exercise is a lot less tedious if you actually like what you're doing. And you can further stack the deck in your favor by choosing a routine that enhances your overall sense of well-being. So figure out what makes you zen, and do that.

    • Double date. Team up with another person for at least one workout per week, says Thomas Plante, chair of the psychology department at Santa Clara University. His study found that people who exercised with a partner were calmer and had more energy than those who went it alone.

    • Get a trainer (aka a cheerleader). Ok, this one can be expensive. But it's worth considering at least splitting one with a friend. Not only will the encouragement from a pro help you feel more confident, people who workout with a trainer tent to try harder, persist longer, and stick to their program better, says Kathleen Martin Ginis, a professor of health and exercise at McMaster University in Ontario.

    • Change your view. Anytime you start to feel bored, switch up your routine: go to a different gym location, try a new class, switch from one cardio machine to another (like from a bike to an elliptical trainer). It doesn't take much to spice things up.

i work out in my garage, and keep a poster sized list of my goals on the wall for motivation to keep going 1) be a healthier, more energetic mom. 2) be a hot wife for my husband 3) shamelessly wear shorts, sleeveless tops, and eventually a bikini. keeps me going...

Its really annoying when people read these tip sheets and then complain that the ideas are not enough to get them to workout. There really is no "secret" to sticking with a fitness routine. You either find something you enjoy doing that's also a workout, or you just suck it up and do it because its good for your health.

5 ways to stick to your workout?

      1. get a shred of discipline.
      2. if you cannot conjure some discipline, find someone who will shame you into doing your workout who is also bigger and slightly scarier than your comfort level allows.
      3. workout in your basement so you can't use money as an excuse not to workout.
      4. start with an easier workout and work your way up.
      5. accept that you're pathetic failure if you quit.

And how insane. I started working out everyday to improve how I look, and that is precisely WHY I'm still working out every day after more than 4 years.

Perhaps I am vain, but I work out for looks and weight first - health second - and get no sort of magical buzz from cardio (I'm a strength kind of a girl). Not only have I been working out for a lot longer than six moths but I go at least five times a week. And does anyone actually read over these things before depositing them here so as to catch little problems that make it look like they are incapable of counting properly?

I started working out a couple of times then stopped. Partly because my mental attitude toward exercising was not completely fulfilling. I found a couple of exercises as well as diets recommendations from RX Fitness which really helped. Mainly my reason for exercising was to tone up and feel better physically because I had so much stress going on at home. The mind is amazing at how it can take so much. I am excited and ready to get back into exercising when I leave Texas and move back to Arizona, stressfree.
