    6 Health Myths Busted!

You know how vitamin C protects against colds? Actually, it doesn't. Warm milk contains no magic sleep aid. And hydrogen peroxide will do your skinned knee more harm than good. In their new book, Don't Cross Your Eyes...They'll Get Stuck That Way, Aaron Carroll, MD, and Rachel Vreeman, MD, both of the Indiana University School of Medicine, use hard science to disprove wives' tales that have been passed down through generations. The findings may surprise you-and save you money on cold cures (none of them work). Read on for six remedies that aren't, and the doctors' tips on what you should try instead.

"Sitting Too Close to the Screen Will Ruin Your Eyes"

When TVs first became popular in the 1950s, they emitted 100,000 times more radiation than they do today, so parents may have been smart to keep their kids away from the tube back then. But sitting too close to a modern set or computer screen won't do any permanent damage to your eyes. The fuzzy vision and headaches that follow a long day at the office (or an I Love Lucy marathon) are symptoms of eyestrain-a temporary condition no different from the soreness you feel after a workout. Relieve the aching with light massage around your eyes.

    "Vitamin C Prevents Colds"

It's true that if you don't have enough C, you'll get sick-but with scurvy, not a runny nose. Carroll and Vreeman hypothesize that this bug-fighting theory began when we discovered the vitamin's link to that infamous sailors' affliction, in 1932; if C could prevent one illness, the logic likely went, perhaps it could prevent others, too. But dozens of studies have found no difference in the number or duration of colds suffered by people who take C and those who don't. What is the best way to stay cold-free? "Nothing beats hand washing," Carroll says.

"Jet Hand Dryers are More Sanitary Than Paper Towels"

Dryer or paper towel? It's a confounding daily dilemma. Molecular biologist Keith Redway, of the University of Westminster, has done a series of experiments to put an end to the debate. He found that jet dryers actually increase the amount of bacteria on users' hands because the air inside the machines is far from sterile. The driers make the restroom dirtier, too, spewing germs more than six feet. Redway named paper towels the winner.

"A Glass of Warm Milk will Help You Snooze"

Even thousands of years ago, the Talmud associated drinking milk with sleep. Today there's no scientific evidence that it has the slightest impact on drowsiness. Milk does contain the nap-inducing amino acid tryptophan, but only in trace amounts. Eggs and cheese have more, but even an egg and cheese sandwich won't knock you out. (You'd probably have to eat seven of them, the authors speculate.) However, if a hot-milk nightcap seems to help you catch z's, drink up. A little placebo effect never hurt anyone.

"Hydrogen Peroxide is Good For Cleaning Wounds"

You know the fizzing that happens when the liquid touches your wound? It's the sound of the chemical attacking germs, yes, and also your own cells. A study in The Journal of Trauma found that H 2 O 2 inhibits fibroblasts-a type of cell involved in tissue formation-thereby slowing the healing process. The authors recommend washing your cuts gently with soap and water, then dabbing on a topical antibiotic.

"If Your Mucus Turns Green, Your Infection is Bacterial-and You Need Antibiotics"

Congratulations, nose-blowing sleuths! This adage is partially true: When you have an infection, your body sends white blood cells called neutrophils to fight the germs, and when an enzyme in the neutrophils mixes with the healthy cells in your nose, your mucus changes color. The falsehood is that you need antibiotics. The infection in your body is not necessarily bacterial; it could be viral-in which case, no amount of antibiotics will help.

people are talking about washing their hands a lot. whenever they can. that's not necessary because your hand has a natural "antibacterial" bacteria so if you wash your hands too often the bacterium on your hands aren't able to do their job anymore and when you DO need them, they're not there for you.

Hate to rain on your parade, "Doctors", but a long time ago I learned that at the first sign of a sore throat inevidably led to a cold, unless of course I started taking Vitamin C @ 500 mg an hour. I usually pop an lemon or orange flavored lozenge and suck on it...I haven't had a cold for over twenty years..and please don't take my word for it, like many will believe these lab tests, just try it next time you get a sore throat, but you have to catch it early or you will get a runny nose then the rest of the cold symptons...and there is a cure for grey hair. I found it many years ago and am without any grey hair although ten years ago I did...and guess what, the natural food I'm talking about is loaded with Calcium..I urge the people who published this information about Vitamin C being useless to experiment on themselves the next time a sore throat comes on...

I LOVE IT WHEN THEY TELL US THAT SOME REALLY GOOD FOOD IS BAD FOR YOU. EGG PRICES DROPPED DOWN TO WHERE YOU COULD GET A GREAT MEAL OF FOUR OR FIVE EGGS FOR LESS THAN A DOLLAR. I VIRTUALLY LIVE ON EGGS SINCE I LOVE THEM IN ALL THE VARIOUS WAYS THEY CAN BE PREPARED AND THEY WERE SO CHEAP. SINCE THE PRICE OF EGGS HAS GONE UP (NOW THAT THEY ARE GOOD FOR US AGAIN) I HAVE BEEN EATING MY EGGS ON THE CHEAPEST 20% FAT HAMBURGER TOPPED WITH EGGS OR IF THEY ARE ON SALE PORK CHOPS, SAUSAGE OR BACON. STARTED THAT WHEN I ENTERED COLLEGE AND HAVEN'T ESSENTIALLY CHANGED MY DIET SINCE.
I'M NOW 77 AND HAVE BP OF 120/68 AND NORMAL CHOLESTEROL.
I'LL BET I'D BE MUCH WORSE OFF IF I HAD FOLLOWED THE AMA PRESCRIBED HEALTHY DIET.
I HAVE NO HEALTH PROBLEMS AT ALL.
HOW ARE YOU DOING FOLLOWING THAT AMA DIET?

Was He wiping his butt then drying his hands in the jet dryer or washing his hands with soap then drying I don't see why the jet dryer would spread germs around if you washed your hands?

EVERYTHING THEY SAY MUST BE RIGHT! THEY ARE DOCTORS, RIGHT?
I WAS GETTING EVERY COLD OR FLU THAT WAS IN FASHION WHEN SOMEONE SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE A MUCH LARGER DOSE OF VITAMIN C THAN NORMAL.
I DID JUST THAT IN 1972. I KNOW THEY ARE RIGHT WHEN THEY SAID IT DIDN'T CURE COLDS CAUSE I HAVEN'T HAD ONE CURED EVER SINCE. ACTUALLY, I HAVEN'T HAD A CASE OF THE FLU OR A COLD SINCE.
THOSE DOCTORS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT! RIGHT?
THAT WAS MY EXPERIENCE. YOURS MAY VARY FROM MINE.

H2O2 creates harmful free radicals on your skin, but it is great for cleaning the carpets! Rubbing alcohol or Iodine is best for wounds. And as for vitamin C, it does boost your immune system, therefore giving it more of an edge in fighting/preventing those colds. I would like these people to site their references in these articles, unless I missed the link somewhere...

Who paid for this study? Pretty much amazing is correct. As info gets out about the wonders of Vitamin C, the pharms are going to be hurting. Citrus fruit was known to cure scurvy in the 1600's. With 1000 mg of Lyposheric Vitamin C daily, my chloresteral, triglyerides and blood pressure have all dropped to levels that I have never seen.

      Something for men to consider...

When you go to the rest room, it's healthier to wash your hands BEFORE you urinate rather than after. This is because your hands are covered with bacteria when you go in, so when you touch your (you know what) you are actually loading it up with bacteria, that (if you're lucky) will end up inside your girlfriend or wife later on (wherever you happen to put it).

By washing first, you clear keep your (you know what) clean. And unless you get your fingers wet, you won't even need to wash afterwards. It's true. (There are medical studies to back this up.)

Now #2 is another matter, for both sexes. You better wash up after that. And use a paper towel to open the door on the way out, because there are a LOT of disgusting people out there who don't wash up after #2. (And you know this, because you've heard them leaving without washing while you're still in the stall.)

I would question the dose of Vit. C under study. 500 mg a day won't cut it? Some nutritionists suggest 6,000 - 10,000 during peak cold season. Just a thought...

all public restroom facilities should have doors that you pull open to enter, that way you simply have to push the door open to exit.............hands free and clean

The studies that denounce the effects of vitamin C are all flawed and were performed hastily and were carried out not for research but for ulterior motives.

Before he died, the doctor who discovered many of our vitamins, including vitamin C said that their original findings on mass doses of vitamin C preventing colds and even affecting the immune system were wrong. These are myths that persist even today just because the information came from mom. With the peroxide, a surface wound is ok to use this on, but not a wound that is any deeper as you will cause scarring and tissue damage because you are actually cooking the tissues. This process is similar to using citrus juice on uncooked fish and leaving it on too long before you cook it. The best thing to do for a scrape or a cut is to wash the wound with NON-ANTIBACTERIAL soap and dress it with SINGLE antibiotic ointment. Bacitracin is plenty. Triple antibiotic ointment is overkill and you can get secondary infections from using it. As for the "Germie Air" in the jet dryers, it is true that it spreads farther A. because it's being blown around and B. because germs do collect on the fan blades as the air is sucked into the fan over time. This is then transferred onto your hands. Paper towels are best. Antibiotics....Nothing is worse than taking antibiotics whenever you think you have a cold. Let your body fight the infection and your next cold won't be so bad. If you constantly take antibiotics, you will be sick all the time and you will not give your body time to build up an immunity for when you get a serious infection. My mother was an RN for over 40 years specializing in pain management and infectious diseases. She said that her absolute worst patients were those who took antibiotics all the time because when they got older and got a typically treatable infection, there simply was nothing they could do for them but put them in a plastic tent with scrubbed air and wait for them to die - usually by drowning in their own phlegm. This process could take days or even years. Some of these patients were only in their 30's and 40's and had no other conditions. Antibacterial soap does NOTHING but create resistant strains of bacteria. Triclosan should be taken off the market and deemed unsafe. ANTIBIOTICS: LESS IS MORE.

I'm glad they didn't have these stupid articles when I was growing up. I always told girls we had to get in the back seat at the drive-in so we wouldn't hurt our eyes from sitting too close.

BS people, Dr Linus Pauling said to consume 8-30 GRAMS of vitamin C daily to prevent heart disease and he lived to his 90's with no circulation issues. This article is just recycled propaganda with a 21st century twist to it. The US RDA is far too low on all counts.

This methods and ingredients were used on me, i used them on my kids and it worked everytime, our neighbors used them too the same way. The time span is about 50 years and this "dr" tried it for 10 minutes(the time a dose would take) and he debunked it?

Here is one more recipe: if your ear hurts, get some milk from a lactant mother, put it on a cotton ball and plug your ear, the pain and infection will go away.

"Hydrogen peroxide is good for cleaning wounds"... It IS actually pretty good. Yes, it does prevent fibroblast growth but, what is also does is that it kills anaerobic bacteria, that is, bacteria that can`t survive in an oxygen-rich environment. An example of one of those bacteria is the tetanus bacteria (Clostridium tetani) and the germ that causes gas gangrene (Clostridium perfringens), which are both acquired by wounds caused by dirty sharp objects. Hydrogen peroxide has a concentration of oxygen 4 times greater than regular air, that's why is so good for killing these kinds of germs
