6 ways to eat bread dining out and save on calories

Real women eat breadReal women eat breadNo way am I passing up on the bread basket when dining at my favorite restaurant. But still, bread can make a serious dent in the calorie count for the day, so how can you still partake of that carb goodness without having to unbutton the jeans or feel like you have to run for an hour the next day. Here are some tips that have helped me:

    • Ask for a half full bread basket. This is especially handy if there are only two of you at the table. Sometimes, restaurants can put 6-8 pieces of bread in one basket, and that's almost a whole loaf. With a half basket, you get to enjoy but won't have too much.
    • Eat just one piece, and then ask the waiter to take the basket away or ask for a to-go box and put the remaining bread in the box to take home to share or freeze to eat later. If the bread is not on the table any more, you won't be tempted to eat more than you need.
    • Order your dinner with vegetables and a protein only and skip a second carb like pasta, rice, or potato. Meals start to get too heavy calorically if you eat two carbs at the meal, bread + pasta, bread + potato etcetera, and that goes for dessert too. This also gives you an opportunity to choose. You can decide which you want more, the bread or the other carb or dessert. With choices, you won't feel like you're being totally deprived.

I have a hard time with the bread basket when they give you the olive oil and herbs to dip your bread in!

Oh gosh, I can make a whole meal on the bread and butter... Giving it up or even cutting back would be a true sacrifice for me. Thanks for the tops, though.

Thanks Brenda! I'm so happy Shine is live now. I was at the sneak peek preview event in SF at the Clift, and was so excited by what I saw. I'll be blogging and twittering big time about Shine!

I can give up potatoes and pasta before bread. :-) Mmmm, nothing better than a lightly buttered and warm roll.

Stephanie, How did you add the "continue reading..." section? Did you add the link to your blog post yourself or is that a feature on Shine?

My weekness, thank you! I will elliminate the other carbs and enjoy my bread. I have already pulled out the middle of the bread to cut down, but cutting the sides will allow me that extra comfort.

Oh yah! Most restaurants tempts customers with sweet-smelling decadents like warm and freshly baked rolls or bread; and, ohhhh, with real and smooth textured - sweet butter to boot!

However, you can work yourself around this temptation. I suggest you eat a large apple with 2 tbsp of peanut butter on your way out to dinner. It works for me every time; and while waiting for the main course. Voila, you win.

Those are cool suggestions- I love bread. If you skip the pasta, and opt for some vegies stir-fried in a vegetable spray, you can have your bread. I lov-ve bread sticks, but i'm not seeing them here where i shop, in northen California. Thanks for the tips!!

a special occasion is going out for dinner, thanksgiving, christmas, family gatherings. these are 4 occasion that i deviate from my lifestyle, habit of eating.
my daily habits: when i have a sandwich i use only one slice or less. when out for dinner i'll pick the smallest piece of bread and have only one bit or none at all.
special occasions i eat what is tasty to me and i will try every course.
i love being around friends and family and get involued in conversation.
      truly
