7 Superfoods to Naturally Lower Cholesterol

By Brierley Wright, M.S., R.D., Nutrition Editor, EatingWell Magazine

7 Superfoods to Naturally Lower CholesterolIf you have high cholesterol you aren't alone: nearly half of all American adults have high cholesterol. Not all cholesterol is bad, though. Your body makes its own and uses it for important functions, such as producing cells and certain hormones. But too much of this waxy substance in the blood clogs arteries.

Though your genes determine how much cholesterol your body produces naturally, your diet plays a role too. If you're worried about your cholesterol, aim to eat less saturated fat (found in red meats, butter and full-fat milk and other dairy) and more fruits and vegetables. Add these foods to your diet, too, which Peter Jaret wrote about in EatingWell Magazine and research has pinpointed as cholesterol-friendly.

10 Steps to a Healthy Heart

    1. Almonds
Substances in almond skins help prevent LDL "bad" cholesterol from being oxidized, a process that can otherwise damage the lining of blood vessels and increase cardiovascular risk.

Sprinkle almonds on cereals and salads; nibble on a handful for an afternoon snack.

    2. Avocados
The monounsaturated fats in avocados have been found to lower "bad" LDLs and raise "good" HDLs, especially in people with mildly elevated cholesterol.

Slice avocados into sandwiches and salads or mash with garlic, lemon juice and salsa for a terrific guacamole.

    3. Barley
When volunteers in a USDA study added barley to the standard American Heart Association diet, LDL "bad" cholesterol levels fell more than twice as far.

Barley makes a great substitute for rice, adds depth to soups and is terrific combined with dried fruits, nuts and a little oil and vinegar for a hearty salad.

    4. Beans & Lentils
From a recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, LDL "bad" cholesterol levels fell almost twice as far in volunteers on a low-fat diet who added beans and lentils (along with more whole grains and vegetables) to the menu.

Experiment with beans in soups, salads and dips. Tuck them into burritos, lasagna and casseroles.

    5. Blueberries
Blueberries contain a powerful antioxidant called pterostilbene that may help lower LDL cholesterol.

Toss a cup of frozen blueberries together with a half-cup of orange juice and vanilla yogurt into the blender for a healthy breakfast drink. Sprinkle fresh blueberries on cereals and eat them by the handfuls for snacks.

    6. Oats
When women in a University of Toronto study added oat bran to an already heart-healthy diet, HDL-cholesterol levels-the beneficial kind-climbed more than 11 percent.

Consider a daily bowl of oat bran hot cereal or old-fashioned oatmeal for breakfast. Oat bran muffins can also pack a tasty dose into your day.

    7. Alcohol
Drinking a glass of wine with dinner-any alcoholic beverage, in fact-has been shown to raise good-cholesterol levels and lower the risk of a heart attack. (Excessive drinking, however, raises heart-disease danger.)

I buy them frozen in the winter. 3/4 cup of frozen blueberries and a cup of almond milk makes an easy and great tasting smoothy.

I had 300 cholesterol when I was on active duty. Had to take statin meds to keep it under 220. I been retired 6 years now and I eat bacon cheeseburgers twice a week. I also eat plenty of whole wheat bread and lean meats. I just had it checked and even with no meds for 6 years, its down to 182. I believe too much fat in my Navy diet and STRESS were the keys to my previously high level. Wanna do a study on me?

I wish they would do a study on you. I'm in the same boat as you and I just quit a high stress job. So I'm thinking mine will come down a bit too. Good luck with the cheeseburgers.

Yes Stress is a major factor contributing to elevated cholesterol, but the corporate world doesn't make money by telling you to reduce stress. Also avocados do not to lower cholesterol.
Before anyone argues with me let me tell you I`m a Dietitian. Father is a Naturopath and sister is a Doctor. We have found that Naturopathy cures several illnesses that Allopathy does not. While doctors told him he needs surgery to get gallstones removes, some even said to remove the gallbladder!
I was a believer when my husband's gallstones were removed by Naturopathic instructions and I saw the proof in sonography.

I just saw coconut oil at Trader Joe's. How much do you take? - Do you cook with it?

I add a Tbsp to one cup steel cut oatmeal twice a day, morning and evening. Aside from the oatmeal I do a low carb diet. My labs came into normal in 6 months. And read the research by Dr Newport related to alzheimer's and coconut oil. A doctor I work with told me in India, where he is from, they use alot of coconut oil and have very little dementia or heart disease. (be sure you get virgin coconut oil)

Coconut oil is recommended as part of the Ketogenic diet. (Wikipedia). I just got some and it is quite solid at room temperature. So far I've used it to fry eggs in and I plan to use in place of butter, canola oil or olive oil.

No big news here.....I've got books in my library older than the editor of this article that say the very same thing. Looks like the "old wives tales" and grandma's balanced diets are way ahead of the "super knowledge" of today, they are just tapping into the old wisdom. At least acknowledge that you are pulling this out of the old books........

Been watching my cholesterol for 25 years, low carb which also means low alcohol works for me. My issue is extremely high triglycerides, so high (600+) that it throws off the LDL calculation. Low carb all the bacon I can stand no or low alcohol use and my LDL with statins is 200 T's 167 and HDL is 48. When I started out on this long strange trip I ate like a rabbit and pasta was a staple, exercised 2 hours 4 times a week. We could not get my numbers in line, changed my diet and here I am.

    • Maytag  •  Raleigh, North Carolina  •  3 months ago
All good stuff here. Well. except the booze part. "Cause, I never had just one drink of booze in my life. One's too many, and a barrel's not enough. Y'all did kinda mention that though. But, good stuff just the same. Especially for those of us unfortunates to have that blasted cholesterol pest. I eat this stuff, except the almonds (no teeth, dontcha know) and at my age ( a very Senior age) nuts are extremely hard to digest. But, hey...bring on those blueberries!!!

Breaking news! A new study just published minutes ago strongly indicate that reading amusing blog replies from strangely anonymous Avocados vastly decreases the instances of sleep apnea in bored midnight shift office workers by more than 85% when compared to sitting at one's desk actually doing WORK during the same time period.

Get outta town....I had no clue.

Do these diets really lower cholesterol??? or is it that all the foods you are eating don't have high cholesterol and so you can't raise what you don't eat....and if ya eat high cholesterol foods, then ya get high cholesterol,....but is there a food that takes away (lowers) the cholesterol or does it take a drug that all the doctors push on you to lower the cholesterol. I can't give up my rare porterhouse!! don't want to do it., not gonna do it.

1 tsp of metamucil before every meal. South Beach Diet says so (and the author is a cardiologist).
