YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

True story: A good friend, someone I consider pretty savvy about health, diet, and wellness, recently e-mailed me and asked if eating celery will help you lose weight (something about it being a negative-calorie food). As far as rumors go, this one was pretty tame, but in some cases misinformation can be downright dangerous. Plus, whatever their origin, health "hearsays" like these can cause unnecessary anxiety and distract you from habits that truly deserve your time and energy. Here, eight common watercooler myths, and what's true, what's misunderstood, and what's just downright wrong.

1.) Baby carrots are preserved with bleach

Not exactly... and there's no reason to stop eating them, says Randy Worobo, PhD, an associate professor of food microbiology at Cornell University. Baby carrots are rinsed (not preserved) in a chlorine wash, recommended by the FDA, to kill bacteria like salmonella and E. coli, which cause foodborne illness. Most precut produce, including frozen veggies and fruit salad, is washed with this or a similar
    sanitizer.

2.) Working out on an empty stomach burns more fat

It does, but don't expect any fat-melting miracles. When you exercise, your body burns calories from both fat and carbohydrates. Recent studies show that working out on an empty stomach might burn a few more fat calories since you don't have as many carb calories to spare, but overall calorie burn is about the same. And, based on research so far, that's what really counts when it comes to fitting into a smaller size.

3.) Eating too much sugar causes diabetes

Not in the same smoking-gun way that cigarettes cause cancer, but research shows that sugar may play a part-and it's smart to limit your intake. First and foremost, being overweight does increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and consuming too much sugar can contribute to weight gain. Still, some emerging research suggests that excess sugar intake can increase diabetes risk regardless of weight. A landmark JAMA study found that women nearly doubled their diabetes risk when they increased the number of sugar-added drinks they consumed from one or fewer a week to one or more per day over a 4-year period.

4.) Does Listerine mouthwash help keep mosquitoes away?

No. Although Internet postings swear it's true, scientists beg to differ. Our research has found that people who sprayed Listerine on their arms were just as likely to be bitten as those who didn't use any repellent, says Grayson Brown, PhD, a University of Kentucky public health entomologist. The myth persists thanks to a strong placebo effect and because Listerine has eucalyptol, an ingredient found in some botanical bug sprays. But the concentration in mouthwash (less than 1%) is too low to have an impact.

    5.) Spicy foods boost metabolism

I wish! Your metabolic rate is determined by your gender, height, present weight/body composition, and age. These factors determine the amount of calories the body will burn to maintain the basic functions of life that occur even when we sleep-the energy used by the heart, brain, lungs, intestines, etc. Eating spicy foods cannot significantly increase metabolic rate and help you burn more calories at rest. Although your body temperature may temporarily rise and your heart may beat a bit faster after eating "hot" foods, over the long term spices will not make any changes in the rate of metabolism.

6.) Liquid eyeliner causes sinus infections

This rumor presumes that eyeliner is able to drain into the sinuses, get trapped, and cause an infection, but that's not possible, says Richard Rosenfeld, MD, chairman of otolaryngology at Long Island College Hospital. Your natural tearing process can funnel bits of makeup into the tear ducts, but they drain into the nose and out the nostrils. If you develop eye irritation and sinus symptoms after wearing eyeliner, you probably had an allergic reaction.

7.) It's safe to follow the 5-second rule for dropped food

It's probably not even safe to follow a 1-second rule: The transfer of bacteria from a contaminated surface to food is almost instantaneous-or, at the very least, quicker than your reflexes. In one study, Clemson University food scientist Paul Dawson, PhD, and students contaminated several surfaces (ceramic tile, wood flooring, and carpet) with salmonella. They then dropped pieces of bologna and slices of bread on the surfaces for as little as 5 seconds and as long as 60 seconds. After just 5 seconds, both food types had already picked up as many as 1,800 bacteria (more bad bugs adhered to the moisture-rich bologna than the bread); after a full minute, it was up to 10 times that amount.

8.) Can cracking your knuckles cause arthritis?

Nope. If you're suffering from osteoarthritis in your hands, it certainly has nothing to do with this nervous tic. One study at the former Mount Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit compared 74 people (ages 45 and older) who had been chronic knuckle crackers for decades with 226 who always left their hands alone; researchers found no difference in the incidence of osteoarthritis between the two groups. But there are reasons to stop this annoying habit: The same study found knuckle crackers to be far more likely to have weaker grip strength and greater hand swelling, both of which can limit dexterity. As for osteoarthritis, that's more likely due to genetics and increasing age.

I take yahoo posts with a grain of salt as they are many times equivalent to advertising. But when I saw #3, I had to laugh out loud; OF COURSE refined sugars cause diabetes. It is a western disease, it is a disease of luxury. I especially love how the body of the post contradicts the title. Keep eating that laboratory food and living lives of sedentary consumerism my friends - you are digging your graves with your teeth...

I kind of liked the knuckle cracking thing...people would always always always tell me as a kid to stop cracking them or I'll get arthritis, but my mom's chiropractor(sp?) always said that it didn't affect it at all. Now the words out :P

I have to disagree with you on the spicy food! I am a diabetic, taking insulin, and if I eat a spicy meal such as hot wings my blood sugar will drop very low. I have asked many Doctors why this happens and they say they don't know why but a lot of their patients say the same thing. So maybe Scientist are not always right??

From my experience, doing your cardio work first thing in the morning on an empty stomach is highly effective! Should you expect miracles? Yes, if you are doing it consistantly and eating healthy and getting enough rest. I used to box and I had to manage my weight religiously. Running or doing some form of cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach was a must. It worked great!! However, this was only 1 piece of the puzzle.

I seen research on several topics this year that disagrees with this blog completely. Such as the 5 second rule, was actually proven by college researchers. It is safe, it actually only depends on the type of floor.

I have battled with achy hands and shoulders for a long time. I decided to try cutting out underarm (all those chemicals are absorbed by the skin), and lo and behold (parhaps purely coincidental), I no longer have either of those ailments!!
At 63, I did not expect to have less aches and pains than the prior decade, but that's where I am at.
Pleas try it and report whether it helps!!

A myth can not be proven with hard science. It still doesn't mean that it isn't true for the believer. Remember the placebo effect. Science can't explain that away can it, otherwise all drugs would have a 100% success rate but they never do.

Chlorine wash (sanitizer) on almost all veggies - WTF! Wouldnt it be easier to just get the workers to quit defecating in the fields? I say YES!

This is a really cool article. I love stuff like this. Not only did it debunk or confrim the myth, but it followed up nicely; for example, the knuckle cracking myth.

This is clearly one ladies opinion, most of which is ridiculous at that. A person's metabolism CAN be boosted by the following: Eating smaller meals more often, drinking more water, eating vegetables high in fiber, intense exercise, and yes, even eating spicy foods. There are other ways too, these are simply the most common. Notice how on the most silly myths 1,4,6, and 7, she cites doctors to back her up; however on the few that actually mean something, diabetes, working out on an empty stomach, and metabolism she gives ONLY her opinion. This is poor reporting. Please people do some reading on your own to find out for yourself.

      RE: #6:
Spicy foods don't raise your metabolism much, but eating spicy foods at lunch has been shown to decrease your appetite at dinner.

If you drop food on the floor, just let the dog lick it clean. Didn't Mythbusters determine that a dogs mouth was cleaner then your own? LOL.

I would believe. We, Filipinos like hot chilly. It's true it reduces weight drastically. The truth: The more you eat hot silly, the more you loss weight. You know why? Because of the effect of the hot in your mouth, you are forced to jump and jump and jump to get air. Jumping burns calorie.

      Interesting article...But who to believe?
    • J L  •  2 years 0 months ago
Lizzie is a fraud. There are so may definitions for spicy (how many different spices can you name?) it is a non word.

One thing spicy clearly does not mean is hot. Hot is in the mouth and is a sensation. Spicy is in the nose and has to do with aroma and taste.

Lol I love how this article is about busting myths and then the comments are filled with people spouting more myths.

as far as the point No 2 goes there is one more thing which should have been included - when you exercise on an empty stomach once the glucose reserves ie mainly glycogen in mucscle and liver is out body does not go mainly to fat as we as humans are not able to convert fat back into glucose it is only one way ie excess gluose ie all exess carbs into fat but excess fat cannot convert into glucose it converts to what are called keto acids or ketones which cannot be used directly in regular condidtions and kick in in situations like starvation - and high keto acids in blood is not good for you - key thing to know is when we are out of glucose reserves ie glycogen ie how body store the extra energy from food when we eat for use between meals - the NEXT SOURCE FOR GLUCOSE IN BODY IS NOT MAINLY FAT BUT PROTEIN - something call gluco - neo - genesis ie making glucose by breaking down protein or muscle so if you work out on an empty stomach forget burning fat but you will end up burning muscle
