    In this germaphobic era, a lot of people think it's never a good idea to be dirty. Turns out, dirt exposure may help decrease allergies and asthma by stimulating the immune system, says Daphne Miller, M.D., author of The Jungle Effect: A Doctor Discovers the Healthiest Diets From Around the World-Why They Work and How to Bring Them Home. Researchers from the University of Iowa discovered that increased levels of early exposure to microbes-for example, having large numbers of older siblings, being raised on a farm or attending day care-lead to fewer cases of asthma.
