The 8 Most Artery-Clogging Cities in America

Is your hometown putting you at risk for heart disease? Is your hometown putting you at risk for heart disease? These urban centers have the highest rates of heart disease and obesity in the country, perhaps because they seem to promote sedentary lifestyles and diets heavy on fast food but light on fresh produce. We sorted through the latest statistical research from the CDC on obesity and heart disease rates to come up with this list of eight metropolitan areas with a population of over 200,000 that are most likely to clog your arteries. And because studies show that unhealthy habits are contagious, anybody moving to or spending time in these places should be extra careful to take care of their tickers.

7 Heart Tests That Can Save Your Life

    1. Detroit, MI
Detroit residents report more heart disease diagnoses than any other big city in the nation, according to CDC data, and 33% of them are obese. One thing the city's hearts do have in their favor: A vibrant urban agriculture movement is transforming empty lots into veggie-filled community gardens, increasing access to fresh produce in neighborhoods where it was previously scarce.

Why Three Seemingly Healthy Women Had Heart Attacks

    2. Fort Wayne, IN Although people in this midsize city in northeast Indiana clearly need to take better care of their cardiovascular health (rates of obesity and heart disease are both sky-high) Fort Wayne has at least one thing going for it, health-wise: According to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which tracks various health markers across the country, Fort Wayne is a happy city. On a scale of "city optimism" it comes in six points above the national average.

12 Foods That Will Help Lower Cholesterol

    3. Lubbock, TX
Although it's not a big city compared to other Texas urban centers, 32% of Lubbock residents are obese, in no small part due to the preponderance of artery-clogging steakhouses and barbecue joints.

    6 Ridiculously Fattening Appetizers

    4. New Orleans, LA
With all those deep fried delicacies and the city's general celebration of self-indulgence (it's the home of the drive-through daiquiri, after all) it's not hard to imagine why New Orleans denizens are more likely to be obese than those of many other cities. But those looking to shed the extra pounds have an abundance of scenic space in which to exercise: A whopping 25% of the city is parkland, one of the highest percentages of any city in the US.

The Best US Cities for Outdoor Exercise

    5. Dallas, TX
According to Sandelman and Associates, a restaurant industry consultancy, Dallas residents consume fast food an average of 20.7 times per month (the national average is 17), no doubt one reason for their high rates of heart disease and obesity. Another contributing factor: Despite its big city status, only 7% of Dallas residents' trips are taken by foot or bike, according to the Alliance for Biking and Walking.

50 Easiest Ways to Drop 10 Pounds

    6. Baton Rouge, LA
Although the Creole and Cajun cuisines Baton Rouge is known for contain lots of vegetables and heart-healthy spices, they often include lots of fat, probably one reason the residents' arteries are in danger. Plus, in Gallup polling less than half of Baton Rouge residents report exercising frequently.

    7. Tulsa, OK
One thing that probably contributes to Tulsans' high risk of heart disease is the city's low "walkability." According to Walk Score, an organization which promotes pedestrian-friendly communities, only 6% of Tulsa residents live in a neighborhood with a walk score of 70 or above (100 being best) and 57% live in entirely car-dependent locales.

    8. Louisville, KY
Louisville contains more McDonald's outposts per capita (39) than any city in the country, according to a Daily Beast/Newsweek report, plus 20 Arby's, 17 Dairy Queens and 19 Papa John's-one reason its residents disproportionately suffer from heart disease. Aside from laying off the fast food, Louisville locals can improve their heart health by taking up cycling. The city is building a 100-mile bike and pedestrian path called the Louisville Loop, leading Bicycling magazine to place the city among the top 25 most bike-friendly in the nation.

People are flat out wrong when they say fast food is cheaper than eating at home. Forget all the garbage and processed stuff in grocery stores. Keep it simple. Fact: a whole chicken is about $5.00, 10 pound bag of potatoes is $4.00, a head of broccoli: $2.00.
To buy three meals at a fast food place is at LEAST $5.00 each for a total of $15.00. I looked at the prices at KFC and was shocked how expensive it is.

Also 100 LBS of oatmeal, rice, and beans..is dirt cheap. All of Latin America and Asia has been subsisting on these forever. Another study shows that longevity is tied to people who eat mainly beans for protein.

We are fat and LAZY is the reason for fast foods. LAZY...do not want to bother with cooking.
Look at the garbage people put in their carts at the grocery store for another clue.
Never mind go walk around the mall stuffing your face.

But fast food is quicker. Home where both parents work dont have the time to make meals from scratch..

I'm fat (although I'm really young so do not really have a problem with it ....YET) and I totally agree with you. I don't eat fast food but maybe twice a month at most. But here in Central FL where I buy my own groceries, I can compare the prices of grocery stores to fast food. And the prices you listed are pretty much precise. I don't see why people say fast food is cheaper. It certainly is not! The only places that regular food costs more than fast food are stores like whole foods but if you're really worried about grocery store prices, then you should be grocery shopping at Wal-Mart and Save-A-Lot, not Whole foods or Publix as for some reason those stores cost at least 20-30% more for anything. You guys say that "oh well the reason why people are fat is because a cheeseburger costs 99 cents and a salad costs 7 bucks", FAIL. How about you try to learn how to cook for once in your lives and buy an ENTIRE head of lettuce for only about $1.50 that can make 3 or 4 salads with maybe 3-4 more dollars worth of ingredients instead of wasting 7 bucks on that tiny and probably fattening salad at Mcdonalds. Calculation for 3 people: if you get 3 items from the dollar menu for each person, that's 9 dollars+ . With that 9 dollars, for 3 people, I can get an entire whole chicken(or better yet, 4-5 tilapia fillets), 4 dollars at peak price, a 5 pound bag of potatoes (Which you will probably only need to use 1/3rd of for a meal for 3 people) for $4 tops, and a HUGE bag of frozen (but not preservative, salt, or sauce laden) veggies for another 6 bucks. each of the 3 people can get two pieces of chicken, and tons of veggies, PLUS you have the breasts left over that can make another meal for two people for lunch another day. Or use to make baked chicken nuggets or something for your kids for lunch the next day. Since you will have half of those potatoes and at least half of those veggies left over, that is a total of 9 dollars TOPS for that 3 person meal. How is this possibly more expensive than any fast food restaurant?? Especially when I used the dollar-menu example, (A lot of people skip that menu and just order a 5-8 dollar value meal) Stop being lazy guys and learn how to cook for once. It's not difficult, you don't have to be perfect at it, and it doesn't have to take a whole lotta time. Invest in a few herbs and spices and a slow cooker for Christ sakes.

Wives with children should be paid per hour for ABOVE the minimum! Women pay attention! Civil marriage license are only man-made business contracts! Add your pay within it and double the pay back if the man is caught in unfaithfulness!!!!!!!! I AIN'T kidding!

Tsk Tsk.... Having more fast food joints per capita does not make the populace fat. EATING AT THEM TOO MUCH DOES! People are responsible for their eating habits, not Ronald McDonald.

Oh YES WE CAN. Ever heard of bankruptcy? Then, not to let other's think we're pikers, we'll move on to big fat and obese bankruptcy and then, of course, onward and upward to morbidly obese bankruptcy. We got it ALL in Detroit. Sadly. OK, I apologize. Fat you may be, but your leaders are lean, mean stealing machines. Have been for years. AND THAT MY FRIENDS IS HOW DETROIT CAN GET WORSE. P.S. Who cares how fat they are when they are getting ripped off?

Holy smokes! The national average of fast food is 17 times in ONE MONTH? ~gasp~ I had no idea it was as bad as that. No wonder half this country is so fat...and broke!

The worse thing drink is like cokes, dr. pepper, and etc.., that's why alot of people have big belly's and have problems with kidney's infection, liver, swollen of legs no circulation of the blood, and etc., cause they rather drink all this junk than water. People think and read about what you put in your bodies. Same as having too much medications in your system too shorter life. Going out to eat alot too not a good idea learn to cook and have fun doing it by recipes and cook with more vegetables.

TRUE STORY: I walked into my sister's home and two of my sisters were sitting on the sofa eating McDonald's hamburgers and watching a Jan Fonda workout video. (My sisters, both about 5'-5", weigh around 200/225lbs.)

I suspect the barbecued ribs and fried chicken, delicious but probably not the healthiest cuisine.

New Orleans food was realy the best. Not only did the French Quarter make my feet and butt dance. But dippin gator chips took me right up to heaven and brought me back with a soft shell fried crab sandwich in a walk around bun. Storm drinks were darn good too. Please lord take me back some day.

I will preach this til my death.... the problems is NOT that Americans overeat, it is that we UNDEREXERCISE! The government is trying to curb childhood obesity by reducing the size of our school lunches when the root of the problem is X-BOX 360, FACEBOOK, PLAYSTATION 3, WII, and cell phones. Back in the good ol' days, kids would go outside and play football. Now, kids park their butts in front of a TV and play Madden. Sigh...

    • AndresG  •  5 months ago
Unfortunatley it is the poor who are the fatest because they buy most of the junk food and feed their children with it.They do not know how to spend the same money buying quality.
