9 Ingredients to avoid in processed foods

If you know me at all, you know that I'm an advocate for whole, unprocessed foods. However, many of us inevitably turn to packaged or processed foods when we are short on time. Maybe we grab a frozen dinner or pizza for a quick dinner for our family. Maybe we grab a quick nutrition bar to satiate our hunger until we can sit down for a real meal. Or maybe, we just don't like to cook. Whether we like it or not, packaged and processed food has become a huge part of our food industry and, as a result, a part of many of our diets.

Although there are some brands that I hugely advocate for, there are many more that border on outright unhealthy and "scary." Many packaged foods that seem healthy often contain fillers, preservatives and other ingredients you don't want in your diet. It is always preferable to choose products that have only a handful of ingredients, all of which should be recognizable. One test to know whether an ingredient is healthy is to ask yourself whether your grandmother would recognize it. If not, there is a good chance the ingredient is less natural food and more man-made chemical. Another good test is whether or not you can easily pronounce the ingredient. If you feel like you need a science degree to pronounce it properly, chances are the ingredient is worth avoiding.

If you do have to resort to a processed food for a snack or dinner (anything canned, packaged, etc.), try to avoid those that contain the ingredients listed in the following chart. Although this isn't an exhaustive list, these ingredients are some of the most highly processed and least healthy of all:

Ingredient Why it is Used Why it is Bad
    Artificial Colors
    • Chemical compounds made from coal-tar derivatives to enhance color.
    • Linked to allergic reactions, fatigue, asthma, skin rashes, hyperactivity and headaches.
    Artificial Flavorings
    • Cheap chemical mixtures that mimic natural flavors.
    • Linked to allergic reactions, dermatitis, eczema, hyperactivity and asthma
    • Can affect enzymes, RNA and thyroid.
    Artificial Sweeteners
    (Acesulfame-K, Aspartame, Equal®, NutraSweet®, Saccharin, Sweet'n Low®, Sucralose, Splenda® & Sorbitol)
    • Highly-processed, chemically-derived, zero-calorie sweeteners found in diet foods and diet products to reduce calories per serving.
    • Can negatively impact metabolism
    • Some have been linked to cancer, dizziness hallucinations and headaches.
    Benzoate Preservatives

    (BHT, BHA, TBHQ)

    • Compounds that preserve fats and prevent them from becoming rancid.
    • May result in hyperactivity, angiodema, asthma, rhinitis, dermatitis, tumors and urticaria
    • Can affect estrogen balance and levels.
    Brominated Vegetable Oil

    (BVO)

    • Chemical that boosts flavor in many citric-based fruit and soft drinks.
    • Increases triglycerides and cholesterol
    • Can damage liver, testicles, thyroid, heart and kidneys.
    High Fructose Corn Syrup
    (HFCS)
    • Cheap alternative to cane and beet sugar
    • Sustains freshness in baked goods
    • Blends easily in beverages to maintain sweetness.
    • May predispose the body to turn fructose into fat
    • Increases risk for Type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer
    • Isn't easily metabolized by the liver.
    MSG

    (Monosodium Glutamate)

    • Flavor enhancer in restaurant food, salad dressing, chips, frozen entrees, soups and other foods.
    • May stimulate appetite and cause headaches, nausea, weakness, wheezing, edema, change in heart rate, burning sensations and difficulty in breathing.
    Olestra
    • An indigestible fat substitute used primarily in foods that are fried and baked.
    • Inhibits absorption of some nutrients
    • Linked to gastrointestinal disease, diarrhea, gas, cramps, bleeding and incontinence.
Shortening, Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Oils
    (Palm, Soybean and others)
    • Industrially created fats used in more than 40,000 food products in the U.S.
    • Cheaper than most other oils.
    • Contain high levels of trans fats, which raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol, contributing to risk of heart disease.
Have you checked your ingredient lists recently? Do they contain any of the above? Have you tried cutting some of these ingredients out?

Interesting article. I have been very curious about splenda. I had stopped using it at one time then I started back using it. But I am going to put it down again. I thought that I was very savy about checking ingredients but I am going to be more inquisitive about the ingredients on the label.

E-numbers are mostly dangerous chemicals used to 'dress up' food to make it last longer (stabilisers), look more attractive (colourings), taste better (sweeteners, flavourings). Most of these E-numbers are not fit for human consumption. If you value your health and the health of your children then Google any E-number and you will discover how lethal some of these additives are. We must also stop eating refined sugar and refined salt and switch to natural alternatives which are readily available like demerara sugar and Himalayan pink rock salt. Sugar is a legalised 'slow poison' and so is common salt. We must eat organic raw foods and we will never get cancer, diabetes or any other major disease for that matter because all illnesses are linked to what we eat. Modern processed food has been ‘engineered’ in laboratories after which it packages, presented and marketing, using words like ‘fresh’, ‘pure’, ‘natural’ to attract us to buy it without us giving it a second thought. The health of people in the West was much much better 100 years ago. Why? Because there was very little processed food and there wasn’t Heinz or Nestle. Eating raw vegetables ‘reverses’ cancer and diabetes to name a few because nature has provide the ‘medicine’ for mankind hence there is no need to ever take modern medicine, which claims to heal but there are always side effects which ‘promotes’ the illness it is trying to cure. The reason this information is kept from the public I because these multinational companies would make much money if didn’t buy their junk and pharmaceutical companies couldn’t poison us with there medicines. 'Superfoods' like green vegetables (spinach, broccoli), honey, dates, water, green tea etc will keep you healthy without the need for supplements.

If you want a natural sweetener, try Stevia. It comes from the stevia plant found in South America. It was used by the Aztecs to sweeten their food. It is very low calorie & can be used by diabetics (of which I am one). It is also much sweeter than sugar & other sweeteners (like Splenda etc).

You would think that people would have figured this out by now, but they haven't. Hopefully some folks will take this sage advice.

Stevia is a great vegetable sugar replacement. It can be used the same as sugar and its 200 times sweeter.... so be careful ... don't use much.

I believe the most recent studies on High Fructose Corn Syrup stated that is acts the same to the body as sugar, and that you body can not tell the difference.

Very informative. Appreciate the fact that someone takes the effort and concern to tell it like it is.

some of these articles are wonderful. I love the one by Aaron. HOMEWORK was done very well. It realy shows us just how much our goverment cares about us and our health---not much! If we would simply just stop buying and using these products we could turn this around and stick it to the coporates who are making all the money off us consumers. I will never by General Mills products again. And for everything being make in China, I don't buy, i simply go without. So buy local products and if you don't have a "Farmers Market" in you town DEMAND one. It's our best source and chance to be Healthier.

Well everyone, there's always 'stevia'....getting to be more popular now. I've used it from the 60s - natural sweet herb with very low carb value....I don't believe you can cook with it. I usually buy the little 'sugar bag' size....It's way sweeter than sugar so you don't need much. I also use spenda. I think the biggest thing is to stay away from soft drinks. I don't think I've had a soda or donut in 25 years (maybe a sip from my husbands glass just to confirm how much I don't like it). Water w/Lemon is my favorite. It's expensive and hard to do - but organic food just tastes so much better - (some doesn't but most does). Just too much 'crap' in everything today......too much food....to much 'bad' food - we really don't need to eat a lot to be healthy. 1/4 cup of Ezekiel cereal, 1/4 cup of organic milk & handful of blueberries gets me till noon....then chobani plain yogurt with bluberries/blackberries gets me through dinner.....usually lean protein & a salad.....that's it.......you really 'are' what you eat.

America needs to take their butt off the T.V and the computers, to spend more time cooking and buying healthier food as oppose of just hitting the start bottom in the microwave to defrost food inside a plastic box or grabbing the can opener to have "soup". Countries with high life expectancy like Japan hardly ever buy massive portions of food that are meant to be frozen for up to 6 months like those huge packages you buy in those warehouse looking type of stores, they simply go to the store every 2 or 3 days get fresher food....I mean come on do you really think that there isn't anything suspicious with a lettuce that is still green and crisp after 3 weeks inside you fridge???

Very interesting. I wonder why sugar was taken out of chewing gum. The ingredient list reads like a chemistry text. I cannot imagine anyone getting excess calories from a stick of chewing gum. It that was too much for them maybe they should try grazing in a field. How many calories can one save by avoiding a stick of gum? Has anyone taken the time to observe a caloric intake in one glass of wine or cocktails. It really is funny to see a very obese person have three cocktails before dinner and then ask for sweet and low in their coffee. It seems like the entire population is suffering from brain drain.

Oh and I also try to stay away from Aspertame because it may also be linked to birth defects.
