9 Tips: How to Drink More Water

Many health experts will agree that drinking more water will help give you more energy. (Read here from Michelle Schoffro Cook on why you should drink more water.) In celebration of this week's theme on keeping up your energy, here are my personal tricks on drinking more water.

    * Make it a Morning Ritual. I once read in a magazine article that many of us wake up dehydrated, and the first thing you should do before you do anything else is drink two glasses of water. I've now made it a regular morning habit, and it inspires the momentum to continue drinking more for the rest of the day.

    * Add Some Lemon. Back in the early stages when I couldn't stand drinking water, I squeezed lemon juice into my water. At restaurants, I would ask the servers to provide lemon slices with my water--which makes me sound snobby, but most restaurants are willing and expected to provide this service.

    * Keep it In the Clear. When your urine is clear, you are properly hydrated. When your urine is a dark yellow, you are definitely dehydrated.

    * Think of How Pretty You'll Look. I don't know how direct the correlation is between having healthy, glowing skin and drinking a lot of water, but I'm not taking any chances. Whatever psychological trick keeps me hydrated!

    * Do It Like It's Hot. If you're in the mood for a hot drink, drink heated water. Sometimes we just want the psychological pleasure that comes with having a hot mug cupped in our hands than the actual drink itself. Plus, coffee and tea contain caffeine, which is a diuretic and elevates the rate of water being expelled from your body via urination.

    * Drink When You Have a Munchie Attack. Sometimes our hunger is thirst masquerading as fake hunger. Drinking a cup or two of water will make you feel "full."

*Take Baby Steps. Don't expect to go from zero glasses of water to the full 8 glasses overnight. Start with one glass of water in the morning and one glass of water at night, and build your way up from there.

    * Cheap cheap. Water at restaurants are FREE!

    * Always have a full glass of water near you when you are working. It will give you something to mindlessly sip on when you are brainstorming or need something to do with your hands.

The information here is correct. You can drink to much water. But you do need to drink the standard 6-8 glasses a day. This has been confirmed by the "medical" community as well as most natural healers. In reguards to the statment to drink water with a straw I would like to point out that using straws causes wrinkles around the mouth...so I would skip that part! I am attempting to drink more water myself, so I wish you all good luck and good heath! :)

I had a liver transplant in 1992, and one of the side effects of the antirejection meds I take is kidney related problems.I know I do not drink enough water, I have never been a big drinker of no matter what it is..I also found out around 10 yrs prior to my transplant that my kidneys are smaller than normal.I don't know if I was born like this or if it developed due to my not drinking enough growing up.I usually have a bottle of herbal tea with me at all times to sip on.Usually Raspberry..I heard green tea is better for you tho.

"Nearly all deaths related to water intoxication in normal individuals have resulted either from water drinking contests, in which individuals attempt to consume more than 10 liters (2.2 imp gal; 2.6 U.S. gal) of water over the course of just a few minutes, or long bouts of intensive exercise during which electrolytes are not properly replenished, yet massive amounts of fluid are still consumed."

Pretty much all I drink is water, until I get home from work. Then, it's decaf ice tea with a little honey.

ok so...there's no way i can drink even 1 full glass of water in the morning when i wake up. i always want juice or something like that, something w/ sugar and water is no substitute. yeah it may be good for u but it has no taste and makes me feel nausious (i know that sounds crazy, but it really does). i bring a bottle of water to work w/ me everyday to try to make myself drink and that has pretty much caused me to become dehydrated (i think)...b/c now i just don't drink enough of anything. water is so gross.

Caution, caution, caution. Drinking too much water can cause "water intoxication" a very dangerous condition. I am a registered nurse and a reliable source of such information. You can find more information about this on-line I am sure. I came across this piece of info. doing some research. Drinking too much water to become intoxicated is something that schizophrenics do and have to be closely monitored in facilities. It's also something done as "hazing" rituals in college when then make new pledges drink gallons of water then these kids DIE. There is also info. on line about that too. My best advice on drinking water is the old standard 6-8 8oz. glasses per day and drink regularly spaced throughout the day. Remember, if you are THIRSTY you are probably already becoming dehydrated. You want to drink before you get that way. For every alcoholic beverage you drink you need to replace two regular glasses of water to prevent dehydration. Hope this info. helps someone.

You don't have to drink 8 glasses of water. You can get that water from other drinks and even foods.

I was a soda freak back in junior high and in college, needed the caffeine to stay awake, then I found out that it was affecting my digestion and I had no bowel movement and it made my periods heavier with an awful odor. Were my stools hard as a rock!!! Then my doctor said, "DRINK WATER!!! A TON OF WATER!!! LOTS OF WATER!!!...YOU'LL SEE..." I noticed that I had more bowel movement, my periods were not that heavy (btw, I even started to eliminate more fluids), urine was even lighter, skin more healthy, and when I sweat during exercise (I work out too!) it's not that stinky. Besides that, my zodiac sign is Libra and the most affected organs of that sign are the kidneys so... Drink water, it's healthy! Don't like it plain, add a lemon slice or grab some fruit-flavored pack sticks.

In my experience, people will either subscribe to the belief that drinking a certain amount of water throughout their day is beneficial, or not. For those who do, it is simply because of some personal experience that they can attribute their increased intake of water to. I personally notice that my skin shows it when I am properly hydrated as opposed to going without. That is only one benefit. I notice that I am less hungry, have fewer headaches, have more energy and feel better in general. The list goes on.

I dare those who feel that increasing their water intake each day does nothing to actually try it. Take your body weight in Pounds, half it, and that resulting number in Ounces is what you should try drinking over the course of a 24 hour period. A great product for managing your water intake per day is the Sportline HydraCoach water bottle. It does all the pacing and gives you all the feedback that you'll need to keep properly hydrated. I love mine!

For those who say that drinking too much water is bad for you, well, they are right as well. However, the amount of water that you'll need to drink to get yourself in to trouble is pretty staggering. Hyponatremia is what it's called and you really have to go waaaaay overboard to suffer from this. Eat a healthy and varied diet and if you drink half your body weight in Ounces of water each day, you will be so much better off for it.

Use a straw -- I easily drink at least 52 oz in a day at work (often that by lunch time) -- the straw helps me a lot, I'll take 3+ draws on a straw over one drink without one.

Also - yes you can drink too much, but we're not talking about a fine line difference by any stretch - we're talking gallons of water to go toxic so unless you're living under the tap I wouldn't stress over it. Also if you're doing any exercising 6-8 8oz glasses isn't enough. My goal is 100 oz a day - easy for me if I use a very large cup (QT has a 52 oz that works perfectly) and a straw.

Going to the bathroom a lot is actually good for you ... but I've found that when I'm regular with how much I take in my body regulates fine and I don't live in the restroom.

Drinking 1 PINT of ice-cold water, first thing after rising in the morning will boost your metabolism, assisting the body's ability to burn calories. A great way to get a start on hydrating your day.

drinking enough water , helps to flush and clean up the system. It also helps to keep the body hydrated and reduces the effect of acidocis, especially for diabetics. But caution must be taken to avoid excess intake which could be toxic.
