Are Fast Food Salads a Healthy Choice?

Taco Bell Chicken Ranch Taco SaladTaco Bell Chicken Ranch Taco SaladAs we all know by now, salads at restaurants can be some of the unhealthiest options on the menu.

Fast food salads are no exception. They can quickly gobble up your daily recommended allotment of calories, fat, and/or sodium before you even ask for that extra packet of salad dressing. A good rule of thumb (unless you're on a restricted diet or working out a lot) is to aim for 2,000 calories, 50-70 grams of fat, and less than 1,500 mg of sodium per day.

Let's see how some popular fast food salads stack up:

Taco Bell Chicken Ranch Taco Salad

    • 910 calories
    • 54 grams of fat
    • 1,660 mg of sodium

McDonald's Premium Southwest Salad With Crispy Chicken and Ranch Dressing

    • 600 calories
    • 35 grams of fat
    • 1,450 mg of sodium

Wendy's Chicken BLT Salad With Croutons and Honey Dijon Dressing

    • 790 calories
    • 53.5 grams of fat
    • 1,665 mg of sodium

    Burger King's Tendercrisp Garden Salad

    • 670 calories
    • 45 grams of fat
    • 1,740 mg of sodium

Yikes! The calories and fat don't really shock me, but the sodium in these salads ... just wow. I've never paid much attention to sodium totals, but you can betcha I'm going to start. I expect salt with my French fries, but not my salad.

All is not lost if you do still want to go the salad route -- with a little bit of customization and smart choices, fast food salads can still be reasonably healthy. A few tips ...

    1. Skip the croutons -- they may be tasty, but they add extra fat, calories, and sodium.
    2. Swap out the dressing for a light or fat-free alternative. But, beware, the light dressings often have high levels of sodium. (Something has to make it still taste good when you remove the fat.)
    3. Go for grilled chicken instead of crispy chicken. You'll reduce the fat and calories in the salad, but not always the sodium.

Are you surprised by the nutritional info for these salads?

love me some croutons! We have a fast food chain in NE called Runza their salads are fantastic! Probably not the best for you but they actually use good lettuces instead of iceberg.

There really is no such thing as a healthy choice at a fast food place. Even the veggie burgers at BK aren't all that healthy because of the bun. Are these BETTER choices than the burgers, fries etc. perhaps, but it's still fast food.

Johanna B: Croutons, REAL, Crutons, get a bad rep for no reason. When I make caesar salads, I make my crutons from scratch using spices, cubes of multigrain bread, flax seed and a little olive oil. I toss them in the mixture and bake them. They aren't unhealthy at all. Sure, if I were to eat more than a few, I'd go into calorie overload, but the 6-8 on my salad actually offer good nutrition. When I used to work in good restaurants, our crutons were likewise made with quality bread and baked. Crutons don't have to be bad for you. Neither does dressing if it's made from scratch. For example, real caesar dressing has an anchovy base, egg, lemon, balsamic, olive oil, garlic, a little mustard (if desired), worcestershire sauce and a little parmesan.... It's not bad for you as long as it isn't used in extreme amounts. Other than that, a spiced balsamic or lemon olive oil dressing is always a healthy option.

No fast food salad is good for you. Even the ones that don't have the fatty extras contain lettuce and other veggies that are stored in a way that causes them to lose most of their nutritional value (if it had any to begin with), meat that is more hormones than anything and dressing that is either all salt or sugar or all fat because very few packaged dressing are even remotely healthy. Moreover, making a salad at home is less expensive than a fast food salad, so why bother?

BK, Wendy's, McD's, Arby's... all these places have the SIDE SALAD. You are asking if fast food salads are healthy, without listing the salads that actually are healthy choices.

They're listing them with the fattiest meat choices and the highest-calorie dressings just to dramatize and bad-mouth the industry. Croutons? I haven't eaten croutons in 5 years. From anywhere. I also haven't had full-fat dressing in over 10 years, 15 probably, no, even more than that.

Side salads can still be 300+ calories with the high-fat dressings. I get grilled chicken on a side salad sometimes at McDonalds, for about 1/3 the price of a regular salad. Virtually the same calories as the regular salads with the same low cal dressing I order.
