Are you afraid of your bathing suit? (Summer shape up part 1)

[Ed. note -- ZOINKS! Swimsuit season is just around the bend. We've decided to jump into it now with tips on getting in shape, great suits for the body you have now and other fun posts today. Instead of stressing, enjoy!]

There are roughly 26 days until the official start of swimsuit season-and there's panic in the air as surely as there is pollen. Even if you don't plan on playing beach volleyball in a string bikini, there's still no getting around the fact that hiding extra pounds in the summer is a challenge. Here's the upside: Losing even 5 pounds makes a BIG difference in how you look and feel. (Pick up a 5-pound dumbbell or bag of kitty litter and you'll see what I mean.) And losing it between now and May 31 st is not only doable but actually pretty easy. Here's your plan:

    • Burn stealth calories. I want to clear up a long held notion about exercise: that you need to do hours of punishing cardio to lose weight. That's completely unrealistic. A better way: Do little stuff, all day long.

In fact, studies show that it's the extra activity you do that adds up to more calories burned-and more pounds lost.

Here's my favorite: Stand instead of sit for 1 hour and you'll burn about 200 calories! Do that every day, and cut 200 calories (the amount in two sodas or a bag of chips), and you could lose about 4 pounds in a month-effortlessly. Second favorite: Do 25 to 50 crunches before you even get out of bed to burn about 20 calories in less than 5 minutes.

I'll be blogging exclusively about getting in shape for summer for the next few weeks, but I want to know: What's stressing you out about swimsuit season? And what are you doing about it?

I fear my belly - although my "babies" are 13 and 2 - since I've had the youngest, I'm back down to below my prepregnancy weight but as all us moms know, getting our stomachs back to where they weren't stretched is harder. My OB-GYN says that the last one pulled my stomach muscles apart vertically and will take some work and time - I'm thinking about joining pilates/yoga to help strengthen my core - will that work?

Hi girls .. it sounds funny that every woman had one or more reason not to go to the beach , hey!!! stop it Try to find some good swimming suit - by saing good I mean good size ,shape and collor and forget all these silly sayings about the cellulite etc. I think that there are more bigger problems in the world then your figure . On the other hand - don´t complain about it - just do something for it . Bye .. I wish you all lovely summer

I don't feel comfortable looking at myself naked (alone), and now we're talking bathing suit season. I am currently working on "allowing" my imperfections to not define me. And working with what I have. So, when I am tired and don't feel like doing my muscle confusion routine and squat/lunge sessions...I keep telling myself (even Hollywood has to work what God gave them). Cellulite cream with a caffine in it, helps slightly the appearance of smoothness. Those MUFA's do work as well. Amazon.com has a great swimsuit collection with tons of choices on monokinis, tankinis, and one pieces. And for the confidence out on the beach...I noticed accessorizing helps. Get a cute coverup. Paint those toenails. Wear sunglass and earrings. Make going to the beach a little bit of "fun" dress-up. You'll feel more confident, and are sure to be noticed, IN A GOOD WAY!

I'm skinny, I never drink soda and I still have cellulite, maria. Cellulite is just one of the facts of life *sigh*

Thigh cellulite is my biggest fear this summer.... I've stopped drinking soda alltogether because I heard that can contribute to cellulite. Although it hasn't gotten any worse, it's still there. Any tips for losing it?

I stressing about my lower tummy. I upper stomach is fine, it's just that little pouch of my lower stomach. I've been eating a lot less and going to the gym frequently, lots of cardio and the weight machines for ur stomach and sit-ups but it doesn't seem to be doing much. Also I'm kind of stressing about my butt and thighs in a swimsuit but that's a problem that i've gotten used to and just cover it with a swimsuit skirt.

I believe we should all accept ourselves for who we are and what we look like. I find that most women are very unrealistic about their fitness goals and their body type. I think all shapes and sizes are beautiful. If you have a booty...own it! If you have nice, full breasts or awesome legs...play those features up! Don't stress about he inevitable cellulite or bulge here and there. Accept it, own it and be happy with yourself. We can't all look like a super model and the world would be a boring place if we did. I like to see a full figured woman in a nice bathing suit strutting her stuff. Confidence is sexy even if you don't have the perfect figure.

I've heard that wearing too tight of a swimming suit causes camel-toe so be very observent when trying one on because the men sure look for it on the beaches.

Southern Goddess P- I agree with you. We need to stress less on getting an "ideal" body and more on just being healthy and fit. Even supermodels have cellulite, flab and imperfections.

      PEANUTBUTTER?
      Are you insane!?
Do you know how much of that is hydrogenated. 100%! Skippy, Jiff, Peter Pan - all of that, horrible! Hydrogenated oils are the worst of them. Worse than transfats. You cannot rid your body of hydrogenated oils. Try sticking a snickers under a bridge and in 100 years i guarantee it'll still be there (aside from natural occurrences). This is because your body cannot break down this type of material. If most of your fat is made up of hydrogenated oils then you're going to have one tough time burning it off if you're eating peanut butter - even in moderation.
