Beware of the poppy seed bagel

(Image by Think Stock Photos)(Image by Think Stock Photos)A Pennsylvania woman had her baby taken away only three days after giving birth. She tested positive for opiates on a drug test mandated by the hospital for all new moms. A few days later, her newborn was placed in foster care for five days. And it was all because of a poppy seed bagel.

The mother, who's since regained custody of her child after proving her results were due to poppy seeds, has filed a civil suit. Considering a single bagel eaten the night before labor can result in losing a child, drug testing accuracy needs reconsidering. But so does our choice at the bagel store.

Is the poppy seed bagel really that delicious? More so than a sesame or pumpernickel? And can't the 'everything' use one less thing anyway? In this age of rampant drug-testing, is it worth all the trouble? The seeded breakfast food has been responsible for parent-child rifts, job losses and jail-time, for starters. Not to mention a Seinfeld episode. The seeds contain small traces of opium alkaloids, like morphine and codeine, that can show up on some drug tests if consumed 24 hours prior. It's been proven by drug testing experts and even by the guys on Mythbusters, even a single poppy seed bagel can result in a false positive on some tests. One study by the Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that 29 percent of tests with a positive opiate result are, in fact, false. As a result, the amount of opiate ingestion needed to prove positive has been raised form 300 ml to 2000 ml, but only in federal workplace policy. Other drug test results, like the one given at the Pennsylvania hospital, don't apply the same rule. All it took was 300ml of opiates for that mother's baby to be taken away.

For parents and even schools, who use home kits, the likelihood of a poppy seed positive is much higher since the DIY results doesn't always differentiate trace amounts. A few other victims of the averagely delicious seed include Brian Darcy, who lost his job as a corrections officer for 16 months after eating a poppy seed roll. Anthony Carizio was sent back to prison for getting caught with a few seeds scattered on a salt bagel at a family dinner while serving time at a halfway house. And even if you don't plan to be drug-tested anytime soon, you're still not in the clear. If you're traveling to the United Arab Emirates, you could be taken to jail for eating the bagel on your flight. One traveler was detained in the airport after poppy seeds were found on his jacket, thanks to the country's strict drug laws.

Plus there's a 99 percent chance at least one of the 30 billion poppy seeds on a given bagel will get caught in your teeth. Policies on hemp production for food has been subject to legal battles. But poppy seeds? Not so much. Maybe just the elimination of the bagel topping would save us all a lot of hardship. When you really think about it, what do poppy seeds even taste like?

This woman must have been in trouble previously with social services for drug use as part of a child abuse/neglect case. I don't think it is procedural for new mothers to be drug tested without a reason.

      Leave my poppy seeds alone!!!

And along the same lines, leave hemp production alone, too!

Respond to the first post: Did you mean tool or fool??

Hmmm...nothing quite like bubulki at Christmas time. Which is of course a traditional Slovak dish consisting of ground poppy seeds, bread, and honey.

Leave my poppy seeds alone, thankyouverymuch!

Please check your source for numbers, can you really print that there are 30 Billion seeds on a single bagel?

The poppy seed and drug testing stories have been around since the 90's. This isn't anything new. So, we should give up poppy seeds?? Maybe, just maybe people should give up the coke and crack. This is just stupid!!

Prescription medications can also lead to false positives and not just the obvious ones you would think of like Vicodin or Xanax. Protonix is for GERD (really bad heartburn) and it will cause a false positive for cannaboids (pot) so it is really important to disclose all meds you are on not just the ones you think will show up on a urine drug screen.

I seriously doubt one poppy seed bagel could raise the red flag on a drug test. Something is missing from this story. Millions of people love the "everything " bagel ( with poppy seeds), poppy seed muffins and cakes. No need to make it a villain in the seed world. If this is a real concern, doctors should advise their pregnant patients in advance.

Thank you, Rebecca! Exactly! Instead of harping on the ridiculousness of DCF and their actions or the technology that IS available for drug-testing, you suggest we should do with one less item on an everything bagel? You have got to be kidding me! The issue with DCF is NOT the bagel, it is their ham-handed practices and complete lack of common sense. Arguing that we allow them to continue on their merry way and not be held accountable for their stupidity is absolutely wrong.

What kind of employer fires an otherwise decent employee over a drug-test based on a freakin' bagel?

Yes, lets all give up yet one more little thing in an effort to allow the government easier access to control every aspect of our lives.

And poppyseeds aren't just for bagels! They are involved in many other recipes, including a brussels- sprouts Thanksgiving staple.

The entire thought process behind this article is completely flawed.

Poppy seed cake is a staple for me (Hungarian) and when made correctly probably has enough poppy seeds to get a false positve even in the Federal tests! Improve the tests and leave the poppies to those who love them!

Well I happen to love poppy seed muffins, they taste delicious, and I work for a company that does random drug tests regularly. What you don't mention is that most people who receive a false positive due to their choice of muffin (or bagel in this case), can clear it up relatively quickly. My boss happens to know about my love for the poopy seed muffins, so I'm not too concerned about a false positive.

IF you have chemo you will always show a level of barbituates in your system. My mother had it in 2001 and 5 years later getting a drug test for a new job showed barbituates. I am the one that figured it out and she did get the job but not after totally freaking out over the situation.

Love poppy seeds & their crunchiness.

I don't care about poppy seed bagels. But I'm Czech and we make these pastries called kolaches and the poppy seed ones are to DIE for. Poppy seeds are ground and mixed with sugar and spices and cooked into a filling for a sweet dough pastry. I would NEVER be able to give those up.

There was a Seinfeld episode that covered this too. Elaine tested positive was opiates and she realized it was from her poppy seed bagels.

Actually Piper, poppy seeds DO have a taste, and are important to the cultural pastries, breads and other foods of certain European countries. I'm proud of my Czech heritage and celebrate it by making a type of pastry called kolaches that contain a delicious poppy seed filling.

Wendy- I completely agree! My fiance' takes Protonix when his GERD becomes horrible, and both my children are prescribed for Zantac (children) for the same condition. His information from his Protonix shows side effects and other information about it. That is why at the bottom of a drug tests they ask what medications you are currently taking.
Curious- Rebecca meant Tool, I'm sure.
There are two ladies who post on Yahoo! Shine that are a bit snarky lately aren't there?
      Running out of stories, ladies?

Then don't have random drug tests, or at least tell people in advance so that they do not eat poppy seed stuff.
