Bottled water: 6 Things you should know

Trying to purchase bottled water can leave you feeling more confused than ever. With the myriad of choices out there, how do you pick one that provides you with hydration, MINUS the hype? Water companies make fancy claims, but think about it: These companies are competing for your attention in a market where there is really no need for additives. Devise a game plan for water that makes waves!

    1. Choose water without artificial sweeteners or added . Terms like Aspartame (brand name Nutrasweet), Sucralose (brand name Splenda), are artificial and have no place lurking in your water! Add lemon, lime, a slice of orange or even cucumber to your beverage for refreshment. Or, choose a bottled water like Metromint (www.metromint.com) that uses mint essence and natural flavorings. Create a splash of flavor by freezing blueberries and raspberries in ice cube trays. Add the frozen berries to sparkling water and serve in fancy glasses for a special occasion.
    2. Become Ingredient Savvy. Just as an embellished "beverage" at your local coffee joint can set you back more calories than a hamburger, flavored waters can have calorie and sugar levels that rival soda. Check the ingredients and look for the term "water" without a list of lots of other ingredients.
    3. Beverages aren't Real Food. With the exception of soups and smoothies, beverages do not provide us with a feeling of fullness or satiety, the way a meal does. For example, an ounce of almonds contains 160 calories, 3 gm fiber and 6 gm protein, and can help tide us over between meals. But sip a 160 calorie sugar-infused water and you're likely to be just as hungry as you were before, if not more. The sugar causes your body to secrete insulin and you may find yourself on a high/low blood sugar rollercoaster.
    4. Steer clear of terms that belong in your science textbook. In other words, many waters use coloring, flavors and preservatives that are anything but natural. If you can't decipher the terminology on the bottle, cruise on to clearer waters. It may surprise you, but preservatives such as sodium benzoate (known to be carcinogenic or cancer-causing) are still used in beverages you find on the grocery store shelf. Scary, huh?
    5. Bottled isn't always Better. Interestingly, bottled water is not necessarily any healthier than tap water, despite what water companies would have you believe. "20/20" took five bottles of bottled water plus a sample of tap water and sent them to a microbiologist to test for bacteria. Surprisingly, there was no difference between the tap water and the bottled waters. To help the environment, you might also think about investing in a permanent water bottle such as Camelbak.
    6. Sail past the waters with hyped up health claims. Because it is difficult for one water company to distinguish itself from another, companies use clever packaging and fancy words to compete for consumers' attention. They convince you that you will feel younger, more invigorated, soothed, energized, beautiful, etc. if you drink their water. Now, let's be realistic. If there exists a fountain of youth, it is simply this: Eat Well, Get Adequate Rest and Exercise and Take Care of Your Spirit.

Sometimes less is more, and with water, this is the case, plain and simple. How do you enjoy water?

Sodium benzoate does NOT cause cancer. It's effect has been to make food SAFER for dozens of years.

Please cite credible sources when making cancer claims. Also make sure you're talking about the actual levels used in food (less than .1%).

I enjoy water from the tap... (and thankfully the city I am in has the best tap water according the EWG)... the only thing that I have to do to make it taste better to me and my husband is to refrigerate it... So I just stick a container full of it in the refrigerator and we have cold and refreshing water.... when I'm out at a restaurant I just ask for some lemon in it.

The best tasting water in my opinion though is water that has gone through reverse osmosis.. even well water or bad city water tastes better after it's been through the process.

Here in Maine we get free spring water right at the side of the road. The towns tap it and check it regularly and you can fill your bottles for free. We go to Cooper Spring just a couple of miles from my home. The best water fresh from the earth.

Emma Mae. You are like an underground publicist. I LOVE it! Hugs! (P.S. The book became a #! Amazon Bestseller!)

Fiji water. It's softer than most water, so I can drink alot at once without feeling bad; it tastes better, too. Other than that, I can't really tell much of a difference.

When I was in college we had a spring nearby that we could get water from....wish I had one where I live! I don't really think bottled water is much better than tap water, but it tastes better! The tap water at work especially tastes like chlorine, so we all pitch in and get ice mountain coolers delivered every month. But really, if it tasted fine I'd be happy to drink it....

I'm not going to buy water. That's all there is to it. Never have. Never will. If I come upon an empty water bottle, I'll put tap water in it and walk around looking cool because I want everybody to think I take good care of my body by drinking "Bottle Water." After all, isn't that the REAL reason people drink it?

Brett, it is true about the water in Maine. I have been to the Creek and am here to tell you, that water is sparkling clear and is better than any bottled water on the market.

I dont like drinking water. But I drink alot of just plain h2o when in Main. (You would think I was part camel, trying to soak up enough moisture to make through the desert.)

I actually think that one bottled water company was "exposed" because the bottled water came from the town tap. I cant remember the specifics of the news sensation but if that company was in Maine, then the water was worth any money that was being charged.

I also wanted to tell you that I have your book, "Get Real" and stop dieting. Honey, you did GOOD. I love this book. It is the PERFECT Diet Book. Why? Because it is not about Dieting. It is about learning how to eat well. Up until I had your book, I actually thought I did it well and that my knowledge on nuitrition was pretty sound. I was mistaken.

IF I could I would go to every diet group in the country and hold up your book and extoll the virtues of this book but I know someone would yell out from the audiance, "Get Down off your soap box Emma Mae, someone needs the wood."

I tried the recipe for the Real Fruit and Vegetable salad on page 107. This recipe is so delicious, that I gave a copy to my daughter. Her one complaint, you shouldn't use the black beans. I asked her why she said that, and she replied, "You can't chew them. They are like little rocks." My daughter had used a 1/2 dried black beans. Do you think it is possible that she was switched at birth? I sure hope so, because the alternative that I gave birth to an idiot is very upsetting to me.

I explained that I used a 1/2 cup of canned black beans that I rinsed and then added to the salad. She likes that version much better.

Right now, Oprah has a "60 days to a better life" where her magazine are following a few women through their transformation. They should have this book. I am betting that they would be done in 6 weeks following your plan.

Hugs to you and am off to do more DIY. (In my house it stands for Destroy It Yourself more times than Do It Yourself.) Sometimes going to an expert first will save you alot of time, money and aggravation. I have proof now, that this can also extend to your life. I sure wish I had gone to you 6 months ago. So from now on, you are my Life Expert.

I will let you know when I post the book review so you can come read it.

Hugs to you and thank you so much for being on SHINE. I would have never found you.

I agree with emma,it was Aquafina that got exposed for bottling tap water. I like some bottles of water more than others.I guess it's whatever taste better to you.

Truthfully I would like bottled water if only it did not come in a plastic container. Perhaps a biodegradable container would be nice.

Don't drink bottled water. Filter tap water yourself with a Brita or Pure filter. There's a mass of trash bigger than the size of Texas floating around in the Pacific. It's called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Very little plastic gets recycled much of it winds up here where it chokes the life out of the sea and that effects the whole world. If you care about the Earth you should avoid plastic bottles as much as possible. I have a 1 year old son and don't want him or his children to inherit a world that we've ruined.

Boy Jason B, that's a "someone else thought for me" statement if I've ever heard one!!! Sodium Benzoate will NOT take the paint off the car without a reaction from other chemicals. But hey, baking soda and vinegar together creates a caustic reaction! Better eliminate those. Oops, water, when combined with salt, pepper and dish soap will cause a chemical reaction too!! (Try it, take a bowl of water, put salt and pepper in, then a drop of dish soap and see what happens.) Better eliminate water, salt and pepper from your diet too! Salt, when reacting with different chemicals can melt snow, can create burns, eat skin alive, can take paint off cars, can infect hair pores... gee - what are we going to do about salt!!!

it's very very wasteful and ignorant to regularly use bottles for water.

I found buying a Brita water pitcher eleminates both the "straight" tap water and the bottled water dilemma quite effectivley

Before you buy your bottled water, any bottled water think about the impact (carbon footprint)or energy consumption to produce and transport the product. What about the plastic bottle after consumption, sure some people recycle but only a small percentage of the bottle is reused. Wake up and get a britta, save the earth, energy, and ozone.

It would help if you found out more info on Kangen water. It is a 'fountain of youth' by supplying the body with hexagonal structured water, and if you are unaware of this fact, then you need to do more research before writing another article. Read : 'The Water Puzzle and the Hexagonal Key' written by Dr. Mu Shik Jhon. You can also visit www.drinkalkaline.org .info and .net

Not everything is 100% healthy. Hormones, pesticides and preservatives are all over our foods today. Whether it be meat or fruits and vegetables. And of course, water obviously isn't 100% healthy. But hey, what can you say, either you pick the unhealthy or the healthIER. Still though, eating healthy foods in general will still improve your overall health despite the hormones, pesticides, and preservatives! Just...not as much as it used to..

Tap water is unsafe. Many of you need to look at the oldest faucet in your homes. look closely at what the fluoride does to the metal around the nozzle. That nasty build up is what you are drinking. They water treatment plant is pumping you full of this stuff, while telling you it is safe. Water that has been run through reverse osmosis is the best for the body. If that aint an option for you try one of these filters from this website: www.ewater.com. when it comes to one of the most important elements for the body don't settle for less. If you are going to drink bottle water stay away from the water that coke and pepsi rejected to make there product from.

who ever buys bottled water should have to eat the bottle also.
Most of them are municipal water any way.
