    Calorie-Slashing Secrets for Dining Out

Want to make sure you're NOT downing needless calories and fat grams when dining out? Here are a few quick 'n easy special orders at popular eateries, courtesy of Hungry Girl. They'll help you make better choices without turning you into you one of those "high-maintenance" diners...

    Starbucks: Just Say "Skinny"

Save up to 180 calories and 8g fat!

"Skinny" means your drink is made with nonfat milk (instead of standard 2%) and sugar-free syrup (you choose the flavor). Yeah, asking for anything "skinny" can seem a little annoying at first, but considering that one little word shaves off more than 100 calories and over half a dozen fat grams from your coffee beverage, we think it's worth it!

    Regular Grande Flavored Latte (with 2% Milk) = 250 calories, 6g fat, 135mg sodium, 36g carbs, 0g fiber, 34g sugars, 12g protein

    Skinny Grande Flavored Latte = 130 calories, 0g fat, 170mg sodium, 19g carbs, 0g fiber, 17g sugars, 12g protein

Taco Bell: Make It "Fresco Style"

Save 100 calories and 10g fat!

When looking for a quick food fix, you might think you need to trade guilt-free for SPEED. But by simply adding the phrase "Fresco Style" to your order at T. Bell, the cheese and heavy sauces are replaced with fresh salsa. Save 100 calories and 10 fat grams on this chicken taco -- good thing, since you might want to order two to make it more than a snack...

Regular Ranchero Chicken Soft Taco = 270 calories, 14g fat, 840mg sodium, 21g carbs, 2g fiber, 2g sugars, 14g protein

Fresco Style Ranchero Chicken Soft Taco = 170 calories, 4g fat, 740mg sodium, 22g carbs, 2g fiber, 3g sugars, 12g protein

Burger King: "Minus the Mayo" Please

Save as much as 210 calories and 23g fat!

When grabbing food from BK, the Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich is a great option... as long as you ditch the mayo. Seriously, it's a dealbreaker. It turns a reasonable sandwich into a fat-fest. Skip it on this sandwich, and save 110 calories and 12g fat. (Add ketchup for 20 cals and no fat if you can't go condiment-less.)

    Regular Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich = 490 calories, 21g fat, 1220mg sodium, 51g carbs, 7g sugars, 26g protein

Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich Without Mayo = 380 calories, 9g fat, 1130mg sodium, 51g carbs, 7g sugars, 25g protein

    Outback Steakhouse: "All Without Butter"

Save up to 395 calories and 44g fat!

Eating at Outback without blowing a day's worth of calories is hard, but it's not impossible. The first step is ordering right. But even if you pick a petite cut of steak and pair it with two veggie sides, ALL of those things will come drowned in butter unless you specify otherwise. Say "all without butter" when you place the following order, and you'll avoid 290 buttery calories and about 32 grams of fat. WHOA.

Regular Outback Special 6 oz. & Fresh Steamed Green Beans & Fresh Seasonal Veggies = 609 calories, 40.5g fat, 1022.5mg sodium, 20.2g carbs, 8.9g fiber, 39.8g protein

Outback Special 6 oz. & Fresh Steamed Green Beans & Fresh Seasonal Veggies, All Without Butter - 318 calories, 8.2g fat, 643.8mg sodium, 19g carbs, 8.9g fiber, 39.4g protein

Bob Evans: With "Egg Lites" or "Egg Whites"

Save more than 200 calories and 22g fat!

Having a big breakfast is nice once in a while... but be careful. As tasty as omelettes are, eggs can act as a high-fat, high-cholesterol base to for cheese and other items. The Western is the lightest option Bob has in his standard lineup of Stuffed 3-Egg Omelets, but you can still save 219 - 229 calories and 22g fat by opting for Egg Lites (which is like Egg Beaters) or egg whites. DO IT.

    Regular Western Omelette = 529 calories, 36g fat, 1809mg sodium, 8g carbs, 1g fiber, 4g sugars, 41g protein

Western Omelette with Egg Lites = 310 calories, 14g fat, 1453mg sodium, 6g carbs, 1g fiber, 4g sugars, 38g protein

Western Omelette with Egg Whites = 300 calories, 14g fat, 1364mg sodium, 6g carbs, 1g fiber, 2g sugars, 37g protein

It doesn't make things cheaper but at least it makes things healthier.

These tips aren't too bad. Some people just don't realize how small changes make a big difference. I keep meaning to try my double decker taco (no meat) fresco style, I always forget. I don't drink cows milk and even when I did, I could taste the difference between non-fat and 2%, yuck. It was like drinking milk flavored water. I'm a soy girl myself, I just wish Starbucks would get rid of the vanilla soy milk they use, Original would be 100 times better. Who wants vanilla milk in addition to a sweet drink? It never tastes right.

I don't like eggs any way but "real". Not whites, not substitutes, eggs. However, I rarely have a 3-egg omelet, and depending on how much filling there is, I may not finish it.

You have to love the incredibly cheesy image they used for this article on the main Yahoo page. Does anyone really look that way when ordering food? Come on people.

We've been making these requests for years at restaurants since we eat out alot. Restaurants are very cooperative - most of the time. When we get it done wrong...we send it back. I usually preface my requests by telling the server "I'm a weight watcher" (even though I'm not) and the server becomes my helper in deciding what to order and always asks the chef to help. We've had the chef come to the table many a time to ask a question. Fast food places are pretty cooperative also. You can do it!!

Blah... No thank you to all of those suggestions! (although they all should be obvious...including the drink water comment)

Who would add ketchup to a chicken sandwich? I agree with ditching the mayo, but wouldn't mustard be a better substitute?

What about asking for salad dressing on the side? Then you can adjust the amount for yourself. Half the time you order salad and it's just swimming in dressing. The best dressings are really simple, like vinegars (balsamic, rice wine e.g.) or plain lemon juice.

      How about anything for diabetics?
Do BK or other fast foods have something for diabetics?

That's great God loves Insanity, I agree. WATER, or how about some real coffee, not a dessert flavored with coffee.

baked potatoe with fat free sourcream and fat free cheddar cheese. Diet coke. I couldn't drink water with this meal. I only like to drink water when I don't eat .

Why is the sodium value doubled?????

I don't eat fast food often but I tried the fresco style at Taco Bell on a whim and I'll never go back to the regular. The pico they use is delicious and you don't miss the waxy cheese one iota.
As far as other "eat out" tips, the "lettuce wrap your burger" at Red Robin is awesome. I like my carbs just like the next person but there's something texturally yummy about the way they sub the bun with iceberg lettuce (I also leave off the cheese, but that's a personal preference since I don't like cheeseburgers)

just remember if u start ordering a bunch of crazy things not on the menu or changing out everything make sure you tip your server well 20 percent at the low end when you start making changes to the listed items your server has to go and make sure it happens in the kitchen and it does take a lot of extra work.
