YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

Can a messy apartment keep you fat? Yes!

I am so looking forward to a 3-day weekend. My weight-loss goal this weekend is to get my apartment in order. (Yep, this is a weight-loss goal!) I'm constantly running around (and running late) so my apartment has been a cyclone lately! I have suitcases I have not fully unpacked yet from the holidays, gifts I need to return, clean laundry that never gets put away, DVDs of Mad Men that must make their way back to World of Video before my late fees start to pay their rent. The last straw was...

...slipping on a clementine peel last night. (Really.) Something must be done, because when you live in a studio apartment like I do, there's nowhere to go to escape the clutter (unless I want to sleep in my bathtub-and the thought has crossed my mind!).

I believe in the theory that most people who take excellent care of their bodies (by making healthy food choices, sleeping well, working out) take care of their homes, too. Since gaining back those damn 11 pounds, I've started to feel like my apartment is more cluttered than usual-and I don't think this is a coincidence. When my home feels like a sanctuary, I treat myself differently. I go to sleep earlier when when my bed is freshly made. I'm more likely to want to cook when all the pots and pans aren't piled high in the kitchen sink. I even find that I leave work earlier when I know I'm going home to a place I want to spend time in. (Find other ways to Change Your Life in 31 Days!)

I just cancelled plans to leave town tomorrow to see a friend who recently had a baby; I think making my home feel more Zen is that important. I have some great new music (Pink, Beyonce and a group I recently discovered-so good-called The Be Good Tanyas) so I'm going to crank it up, scrub floors, throw away things I don't need, re-fold all my gym clothes and underwear and go grocery shopping. It's supposed to snow all weekend here, so I can't think of a better way to spend my time.

Outsmart weekend weight gain! Here's how not to blow your healthy eating plan over the weekend.

How 'bout you guys: Is a messy home messing with your weight loss goals? And do you have one little goal you want to accomplish this weekend that could help clear the road for your shape-up success? As you can see, the goal doesn't need to be "go to the gym"-it can be (seemingly) unrelated.

Clutter doesn't just pertain to your home: fat is literally Clutter of the Body. When your home is cluttered, your mind tends to be cluttered, and sure enough, your body becomes cluttered. Focus on organizing one of these areas, and the rest will follow!! (Coming from a former complete slob, fatty, and drug addict who is now somewhat of a neat freak, slim because I run daily, and emotionally and mentally stable person).

Sooo true... I completely understand what you're trying to say. During the weekends, especially when i'm in a bad mood over a fight or something, I end up cleaning my room. I organize my things and end up organizing my thoughts as well. when i finish cleaning, i tend to think more rationally about the things i've been upset about. I guess that "good-feeling" i have after cleaning up my mess actually improves my well-being. Now that you say that cleaning up could help me lose weight, it's like hitting two birds with one stone. I'd surely do this more often.

I agree. This is me as well! My resolution this year is not to lose weight — it's to become more organized, because I really need it, and I feel like if I achieve organization, I'll also improve other aspects of my life, like losing weight and eating healthier. Thanks for voicing what we were all feeling!

I know what you mean...before I had a kid my house was a disaster. I always ate out and went to bed at like 2 in the morning. Then when I got pregnant and started nesting I started cleaning. Well I got in to that habit and I felt so much better about myself and well, life in general. Then postpartum depression hit and the house was a mess and I hadn't lost anymore weight. So I kicked the messy habit and have lost 50 lbs since having my son! I am as small as I was in highschool!

There are those that say that the condition of your home reflects the condtion of your life and mind. so..to that i say perhaps the opposite is true where if you purposely get your home in order then you're automatically clearing your mind and opening up a path for a flow of positive things to enter your life. This is what feng Shui is based on the flow of Chi(energy)I recently purged my self of old things like clothes, shoes and items that were not in working order or not being used and donated , trashed and passed them on and i feel more at peace and organized in every aspect of life. so clear the path for the new and the favorable to come into your life.

This is so me! When my room is cluttered and stuffy, my head is the same. I can't think clearly or focus. But when my room is clean and organized, I am more organized! I never thought that they could be connected until now!

Wow. This is so, so true for me! I really need to get on the ball around the house. It's amazing how connected these things all. It's all about balance in ALL areas of life!

Absolutely true. Been remodeling my kitchen/dining/living room for about 6 months now, and living in the clutter and mess has taken its toll. Have gained about 10 lbs, partly because I eat take-out instead of cooking what I can, and I catch myself just looking around at the cleaning that needs to be done and asking myself "why bother?". It's almost finished, and I've got to get my head straight in order to get the house straight - or is it the other way around?

I completely agree with most of what is said here. I just went through a weird transitional period where I decided to cleanse everything -- my body (through diet and exercise -- and quitting smoking!), my work and my apartment. I decided to throw out anything I hadn't worn in six months (you know how it is, you always think you'll wear it "one day," maybe after you shed 10 pounds you're planning to lose. And, of course, it never actually happens).

I got on a roll, and before I knew it, I was throwing out old kitchen appliances that were rusting, office supplies, and even furniture that just didn't seem to go anymore. What is super convenient is that most rubbish removal or interior demolition companies will actually come to your home and take care of the trash for you (I actually used DiMola Bros in Ridgewood, Queens, New York -- http://welovegarbage.wordpress.com and http://dimolabros.com, if you're interested. The company also does all types of yard waste and renovation material clean-outs and removal in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island).

Making this drastic change in my life has certainly improved it in more ways than one. Thanks for this article, as it has summed up everything I've gone through in the last year!
