Exclusive: Michelle Obama on the Affordable Care Act, one year later

I want to share with you a personal story in the hopes that it encourages you to get the most out of your doctor visits for your children.

A few years ago as a working mom, I had the best intentions to feed my kids healthy food on a budget, knowing that sometimes pizza or the drive-thru were inevitable. But I was surprised when my pediatrician pulled me aside during an annual well-child visit and told me we needed to start paying better attention to what we were feeding our girls.

They were younger at the time. They were active and growing, with a healthy sense of themselves, which Barack and I have always encouraged. But our doctor told me that their BMIs were creeping upwards. Now to be honest, I didn't really know what BMI was. And I certainly didn't know that even a small increase in BMI can have serious consequences for a child's health. So I'm grateful my pediatrician was there to help.

He explained that BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a way of gauging whether or not your child is within a healthy weight range for his or her height, age and growth pattern. A percentage too low may indicate hunger and poor nutrition, and a percentage too high can lead to diabetes, heart disease and other health issues. I was fortunate that our pediatrician was paying attention to the trends of childhood obesity, because I never would have known to ask for a screening on my own.

This information is now within reach for you and your family too - you just have to ask for it. Last year, my husband signed the Affordable Care Act, which required new insurance plans to cover preventive services like BMI screenings without any kind of deductible, co-pay or co-insurance. So today, most of you can get your child's BMI screened without paying a penny out of pocket.

As parents, you will also benefit from the new law. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, preventive services like mammograms, colonoscopies, cervical screenings and treatment for high blood pressure are available in new plans without any out of pocket costs. We know that these kinds of preventive services will go a long way in preventing chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and high-blood pressure, which touch the lives of millions of Americans. These diseases also consume over 75 percent of the health care spending in our country. Increasing access to preventive care will keep us all healthier and save money.

And by making it easier for women to get mammograms, the Affordable Care Act will help women with breast cancer catch the disease in the early stages. We know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. The Affordable Care Act will help prolong women's lives while we search for a cure.

So I encourage you to talk to your child's pediatrician and your doctor. Ask for a BMI screening so that you can catch any problems early on. Make sure you're getting the care you need to stay healthy yourself and stop health problems before they become emergencies. Together we'll all stay healthier and raise a generation of happy, healthy kids.

Doris - Take a pill. No one gets respect until they earn it. That goes for any First Lady. Moochelle had a no-show job before her current no-show job!

The BMI debate has gone on for years. One opinion praises it and the other side says it's too strict.

Loretta, this is in response to your post dated March 23, 2011. The last time I checked Ms. Obama was a Harvard Law School graduate, a wife, working mother and last but not least the "FIRST LADY" of the United States of American. I believe and I'm sure most unbiased, thinking, logical individuals would agree this takes her well out of the category of being referred to as GAL! It begs the question what more would she have to accomplish to be referred to as the woman that she is (maybe being white)? Also, you have your right to feel anyway you like about this President and First Lady but don't you think (oh forgot) that if you seel no respect should be shown to the present occupants of the White House at least respect is due to the office.

Nope. Not a drop of respect. Moochelle said she was "finally proud" of this country. That's when I stopped listening to her drivel. She is entitled to her opinion but in her current position, she needs a filter. Sorry, Doris. Nice try, though.

I'd like to know where all of these obese children are? This obsession with weight we are teaching our children is dangerous. I am seeing a range of people so worried about becoming fat their becoming dangerously thin and starving their children, along with themselves. We are teaching people to have complexes, low self esteem, etc. Yes it is dangerous to be heavy but just as bad to watch so many become extremists because of their weight that they have chose to work out excessively, take dangerous products, to get their build, and their weight to extreme low levels. People are becoming insane with this talk. Please lets help the ones that truly need help but don't make this out to be an epidimic with our young generation. They are getting way to skinny. Parents smarten up dont' be swayed by such talk. I for one know that having a little bit of extra meat on the bones is healthy, I was diagnosed with cancer and this supposed extra weight I had actually saved my life. Because if I would have already been extremely skinny or at my prime BMI, I would have not survived. Maintaining proper nutrition is very important when becoming ill so please if you weight a little more than you should or not right at your BMI by todays standards don't sweat it as sometimes maybe thats right where you should be. As long as your blood pressure, sugar, and cholesteral, are good and all your body parts are working you stay where your comfortable. If your kids are active they will be fine also. So let them out to play.

Aww the first lady is a poor mother struggling with all american mothers to care for her poor little children. How about a thanks to all the really hard working mothers and dads that provide 100% best in the land healthcare for the first family. Will Obamacare give us that same healthcare advantage that all our political thieves enjoy? NOT! Dont try to appeal to my paternal senses because you live in a differnent world thant the mainstream americans do/

Hey, why dont you tell your husband Obama to put in a new bill for free cancer care. After all, we will all need it after this radiation fall out. I suppose you and your family wont need it, you took the antidote and stayed away from the radiation in south america.

Although you need to connect with the community on a personal level, Mrs. Obama, consider the consequences of your child's self esteem when all their classmates read their "BMI's were on the rise" ... odd how the Obama's have good intentions but in practice they are ignoring the future.

      Maryliz,
Sorry you found my FACTS snarky and boring. Maybe it would behoove you to read the whole thing. Do some research. Post your own facts in rebuttal. If that's a bit much for you, then take a few zzzzzzz's. Sounds like you might need a nap.

      "Affordable" healthcare my patoot.

As for BMI, I'm not sure why Mrs. Obama thinks we need a screening for this. If it's just a straight BMI number she's referring to, any idiot can do that at home with a pencil and a scale.

Also, as Gizmo pointed out, do we need a number to alert us to the possibility that our child could be overweight?

It's typically pretty evident, and if a child doesn't appear to be overweight and is healthy, then a BMI would be irrelevant anyway.

      This is ridiculous.

Always someone trying to sell us something that isn't worth anything.

Thank you "C" and "AAAA". What people on here don't realize is the child obesity is a very real problem, and Michelle Obama is only pointing out the obvious. Doctor's have been using height and weight charts and percentiles for the last 50 years, and now use those statistics into calculating a BMI. It's not rocket science and is calculated in minutes at a regular visit at no extra cost. Again, let's not kill the messenger--oh, wait, it's because you don't like the messenger or the truth.

Typically, it used to cost around $40 to have your BMI checked!! Now that it is free to everyone, it is a win-win situation for everyone that is low income, and has children!!!! To monitor progress, this test needs to be given to all school aged children on a yearly basis!!

Childhood obesity is a problem..because the kids don't have the opportunities to get outside and play, running and jumping, riding bikes, jump ropes, tag, dodge ball, park toys that develop muscle and all the others burn off the fat..we got apples and oranges for snacks..they eat processed foods loaded with high fructose corn syrup, high cal snacks, vid games and nickelodeon..maybe their minds are strong but the bodies are weak..more infections and trips to the docs..I never remember going to the doctor..didn't need to..healthy from all the playing outside exposed to the germs you bet but developed immunities to them..what kind of world have we developed in the name of progress for our youth today? Now we need to take our children to the doctor for BMI....I say WTF..get outside and play...then your BMI will trend toward normal..the body will be what the body does..it will balance itself..get active..get healthy... the old fashion way...here have an apple..:)

Everyone needs to do some research and read about childhood obesity. One-third of our U.S. kids are overweight, obese or morbidly obese, placing them at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure and other related diseases. Doctors and educators are truly concerned over this issue. Schools are removing soda and juice machines, and are trying to offer healthier school lunches and more physical activity time. How all this might impact health care down the road has not even been determined yet. This is not an obsession, folks, this is a real problem in America. Look around you.
