Fat girls banned from club for being... you guessed it... fat girls

I don't know how I missed this, but apparently a nightclub in England started banning fat women at the door, while allowing fat guys entry. Discriminated patrons were turned away by bouncers, stating that they were "too big" and the manager confirmed, stating that fat people are bad for business.

Mr Sayers, who has admitted he too is overweight and on a diet, at first defended his actions. "We got a lot of people that I'd classify as morbidly obese and we were getting complaints. I am deeply apologetic but business is not good at the minute and I was trying to protect my business," he said. But he has since backed down and admitted the ban was "an error of judgment". "I would like to apologise whole-heartedly to these people and say they are welcome back to the club," he added.

Wow, really? You think that maybe banning people on the nature of their size just might be a bad idea? Go figure! Who were the complaints from? One guy who is complaining that there weren't enough hotties at the club? Are fat girls actually repelling the hot girls? Maybe they could let the fat girls come in through separate doors, maybe in the back of the club, and then ask them to stay back, in the dark areas where they won't bother anyone. Perhaps they'll just hang out there, docile as cows, waiting for the magical beer goggle moment, which is the only time anyone would ever want to have sex with a fattie, naturally. Huh. I'm shocked that this wasn't a valid business plan. SHOCKED. And I'm sure now that he's apologized "whole-heartedly," all the fat girls are going to come to Havana in droves, their chubby fists clutching sweaty twenties, ready to spend! Spend! Spend!

Phew. Sorry, that was sarcasm overload but really, I couldn't contain it any longer. Wow, you know what's bad for business? Being an ----- . There. I said it. Feel free to skewer this guy in the comments. You know you want to.

Everyone quite your whining and go find another bar. The poor guys are discriminated against because they can't afford the cover and the drinks. Men pay with their wallets, women pay with their looks. It's as old as Adam and Eve.

One point of view is that since you're a business owner you have the right to discriminate as necessary. The other point of view is that a consumer should have free choice over who to do business with. I really feel bad for people who argue the former. This means that if I was an insurance company I won't insure you simply because of pre-existing conditions or because you might be predisposed to cancer or alcoholism. I'll tell you something. Nobody is perfect. If anyone was to do their bloodwork, they'd probably find some surprising results demonstrating how flawed their genes really are. Honestly if you're not willing to accept all different consumers, you do not belong in business, and you don't deserve to have a business.

most of the women in my family are fat, not morbidly obese but more than 20lbs overweight. the ones who aren't had to work very hard to keep from becoming that way. at my heaviest i was 270 lbs and 5'8". for two years i cut what i ate in half and worked out just a little. i got down to 180lbs, still 30lbs away from my "ideal" weight but i was so proud of myself for loosing over 100lbs in 2 years. then, on my 21st birthday i went to a local club and a walking plank.... oh excuse me, a thin woman asked when i was going to try to loose a little weight. i went home crying. all the effort and hard won selfesteem felt like it was nothing, it was gone in a matter of seconds. just because a woman is overweight doesn't mean that she isn't working on bettering herself or that she doesn't want to change. do people really think all the critisism helps? it is the hateful words and thinly veiled hatred that cause us to seek comfort in food, thus making things worse.

being fat doesn't make u an oppressed minority. u have a choice in the matter. its insulting to real minorities who have been treated terribly for something that is incidental & in no way defines them. if you're really fat, it is the result of a series of poor choices.

Wait, business is slow and you're turning people away? Thats just dumb and bad business. I say ban fat, boring, dumbass guys and only let the cream of men come in! One dumbass loud mouth jerk will turn out a whole group of women! Remember we run in packs and all it takes is for one of us to deal with a moron for us to decide to leave as a group!

and this is what the world is coming to. and as a curvy "overweight" woman i feel like the physical expectations being driven onto women all over the world these days is ridiculous. are you aware that a woman of my height and age (5.5 and 24) according to the charts at the doctors is supposed to weight 115lbs? i'm no where near that and you know what? people still think i look good and when i was down to 125lbs i was dizzy constantly and was hospitalized twice for dehydration.

people need to realise that the human body comes in many sizes and everyone just needs to deal with that and kudos to everyone fighting to make people understand this. cause you know it was some curvy girl with a good lawer that made that guy change his tune.

we should be able to ban anyone we want from any club, blacks, gays, fat chicks, why not

it our club, go find a big building and have a fat chicks club, keep everyone out of your business i say, you want to discriminate, do it......

This is pretty common practice for upscale clubs. Not saying it is right, but this also goes the same for grungy looking people, and people who look like they don't have much money. Attractive people and wealthy people get in. The bouncer at the door does more than just check ID's.

Ok this seriously is sounding like the sob story from the Diary of a Fat Girl. Sure double standards are wrong (since the owner is a fat guy), and people should have the same rights. This is of course, in a perfect world. Reality is, that fat people simply will never have the same rights as the fit/normal/skinny/hot/perfect/whatever people. I don't like the guy's decision, but it is his right to make it. Before I have a bunch of fat girls pouncing on me, I must tell you that I am a male and used to be quite obese as a kid. I was 200lbs by the time I hit middle school. Since I was both fat and tall, no one bullied me but I was still judged and made fun of. You know what I did? I embraced all of those influences and used it as motivation to actually lose weight. It is not healthy to be that big, and will ultimately be the death of you. So I welcome all of these negative stimulus towards overweight people, despite knowing they are unfair. Today I weigh the same as I did back then, but am 6'4" with a low BMI. Losing the weight was the best thing that has ever happened to me, so why should we encourage people to stay fat? Oh its genetics, oh its medication, oh its metabolism... what a load of crock. If you don't put in the effort, how dare you try to claim the prize.

I suppose I'd get thrown out because I'm short and curvy. (5'3", 39-25-29) What is the big deal about super skinny girls? I like looking like a woman and not a stick. And I know some "fat" girls who are just beautiful! They should ban stick-like women from the club because they don't want to pay ambulances when those anorexic chickadees pass out on the dance floor!

Everyone wants to have fun and needs love. Why should we discriminate on appearances? All it is going to get us in the end is more problems. Don't you people see when you put down someone's size that not only do you make them feel bad but the majority of those bigger people then develop health issues with belemia and anorexia? The youngest recorded case of anorexia nervosa was recorded in a seven year old girl who because of people like you and peer pressure resorted to starving and purging herself. If you won't think about other adults having issues because you put them down think about your children. Would you want your child who is a little bigger than the rest hurting theirselves like that? So before you put others down perhaps you should think 'what if my child is overweight and turns to anorexia to loose it?' or 'what will my child do to another child if they hear me call someone fat?'. The answer is A or B... A. Your child is going to be the bully who makes another child go to the extremes or B. Your child is going to be the one to be going to the extremes because of the weight issue in this world. We need to stop this discrimination before it affects our children and carries on for another generation. So like I said before, we need it to stop because I don't know about you but I don't want my children being either one of those.

Failure to site sources [where is this news story?] shows how insipid this piece is.
Valid points on both sides, for better or worse, surprisingly said better in the comments than in the article.
      Does not excuse lazy writing.

It is this FAT women who are buying the drinks in the first place !!! The skinny women are waiting for some man to buy them drinks. The owner probably only had a change of heart when he saw that the skinny women were not making any money, so he wanted the FAT women back.
    • Eric  •  1 year 3 months ago
Well, at least he's open about his reasons for it. Although it'd probly be even better for his business if he just opened up a gym next door.

so? there are hundreds of single clubs online and elsewhere that give women free memberships but men must pay. how is this different? theres plenty of dicrimination against men also. if a man talks dirty its sexual harrasment. if a woman talks dirty its 4.99 a minute. whats your point?
