Feeling bloated? Eat a banana!

Late last night, I was out enjoying a three-course dinner. Early this morning, I was getting my makeup done to appear on a TV segment about jeans with SELF's own Denim Doctor! We all know that restaurant meals tend to go wayyyyyy overboard on sodium, so I was worried about looking a little puffy for my small-screen debut (not to mention fitting into the form-fitting jeans we chose for the segment yesterday!). My food solution? A banana.

Here are some words of wisdom, straight from SELF's archives: "If sodium has you feeling like a blimp, chow good sources of potassium, such as bananas, sweet potatoes or edamame. Potassium is sodium's chemical counterpart, and it latches onto sodium to flush the excess out in your urine, relieving bloating."

The eat-potassium-to-banish-bloat is a trick our own salt-loving editor-in-chief uses, so I've added it to my arsenal too! This morning I sliced a banana to my warm oats instead of berries. The high-fiber, potassium-packed breakfast made me feel much better. Maybe it was the de-bloating effects, or maybe it was just a confidence booster... Either way, it was a healthier choice than skipping breakfast altogether and it means I'm making progress when it comes to battling my all-or-nothing attitude toward healthy eating.
