Former Susan G. Komen VP Karen Handel: Planned Parenthood "Hijacked This Great Organization"

Ousted Susan G. Komen for the Cure vice president Karen Handel accused Planned Parenthood of "hijacking" the breast-cancer charity and conducting "the most unbelievable shakedown that I think we've seen in a long time" in an interview with the Associated Press in Atlanta yesterday.

"Planned Parenthood unleashed, unleashed a premeditated, vicious attack not only on Komen, but also on Ambassador Brinker as well," she said. "It was absolutely outrageous what transpired here."

During the interview, Handel again contradicted Komen founder and CEO Nancy Brinker's assertion that Handel hadn't been involved in the organization's decision to cut off funding for breast-cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood, and confirmed rumors that she had been the driving force behind the new grant rules that excluded the women's health organization.

(AP Photo)Former Komen Foundation vice president Karen Handel blasted Planned Parenthood in an interview on Tuesday. (AP …"I fully acknowledge that I was involved in this," she said. "I fully embrace that I was the lead in developing alternatives and working through the process."

"This was the best decision, in my view, for the organization in terms of how they were going to do granting, to not be in the middle of a controversial issue, and to be able to move the organization forward," she continued. "The last time I checked, this is a private, non-profit org that has every right -- every right -- to set its standards the way they choose to set it in the best interests of this organization."

Though Handel has been accused of being the sole person behind the decision, she pointed out that it had been "fully vetted at every appropriate level of the organization" and that the board "knew that we were moving forward with this." Board member John D. Rafaelli, a Democratic lobbyist and a supporter of Planned Parenthood, agreed, and blamed himself for not anticipating the backlash.

"Honestly, I didn't think it through well enough," Rafaelli told the Huffington Post. "We don't want to be pro-choice or pro-life; we want to be pro-cure. We screwed up, I'm saying it. We failed to keep abortion out of this, and we owe the people in the middle who only care about breast cancer and who have raised money for us an apology."

In a more subdued interview with Fox News, Handel condemned Planned Parenthood and pro-choice supporters for pressuring Komen to restore funding.

"All of us should be saddened that an outside organization will put this kind of pressure on another organization around their processes and granting and how they do it and to whom they are going to grant," she said.

But she also admitted that long-standing outside pressure from pro-life groups who objected to Planned Parenthood's abortion services triggered the decision to change the grant criteria. Rather than criticize these groups for pressuring Komen, however, Handel -- who last week described Planned Parenthood as a "pro abortion group" and who ran for governor of Georgia on a pro-life platform promising to eliminate state grants to the women's health organization -- told Fox News that Komen needed to avoid the controversy.

"And I think everyone can agree that if you have a grantee where there's this type of controversy surrounding it, Komen was doing its level best to move to neutral ground," she added.

When asked if the defunding plan was her idea, Handel paused, and then sidestepped the question. "I'm saying this was long an issue for Komen, dealing with the controversies of Planned Parenthood."

SGK said over and over that the decision was due to the (trumped-up) investigation , not disagreement with Planned Parenthood's mission. Ms. Handel now says that was a lie. CEO Nancy Brinker said repeatedly that Handel wasn't involved in the decision. According to Handel that too was a lie.

Meanwhile Handel doesn't understand the difference between a "shakedown" and the concept that actions have consequences. It also seems that she feels no accountability to donors because SGK is a private, non-profit organization. That's troubling to say the least.

I'm afraid SGK can take a long "walk for the cure" off a very short pier as far as I'm concerned. Let's leave greed, corruption and name calling to the professionals in Congress.

Non profits should be non political. Handel has been against birth control her entire career and SGK knew that. They let her make decisions based on her "moral" agenda without concern for the many at PP who would benefit from those donations, both men and women. I regret the years I have donated to SGK, but that has ended and I will donate directly to cancer research. They let one dispicable woman bring down their entire organization and hopefully it will be gone within the year. Cut them off.

Yes, Komen has every right to decide on the standards they want, just as donors have every right to decide where they want their money to go.
      • Ree Bellion 3 months ago
So why did they have to lie about it? Donors to Komen also have a right to decide to contribute to Komen.

So right, I'm afraid Ms. Denise is not too well informed.

Before you donate to ANY charity look at what the CEO makes in salary. 1.American Cancer Society $ 2.2 million, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center $2.5 Million,Jimmy Fund $1.2 million, Red Cross $1.0 Million. It goes on and on...donate to a local shelter or to a family directly. Screw these organizations. Remember what happened after 9/11 with collected private donations. Someone decided that they would give the most money to who "deserved" it the most.

And they all want you to volunteer for free.

During Katrina, the Red Cross was shipping the huge swell in donations overseas. makes you all warm inside doesn't it.

You have a good point about people who run these organizations. But also look at it from the other perspective. Running these large organizations is a full-time job, and if you want someone who's good at it, you're going to have to pay for it.

Out side pressure...Isn't that little like the pot calling the kettle black when you consider that the Komen laywers spend millions on suing small non-profits for using the words "race for the"..How many small non-profits must komen close down...

She's just another slimy dishonest Repug who will lie and cheat to gain power to force everyone else to live life in her ignorant, narrow ways.
So much for RepugTeas saying they believe in individual freedom! What they really mean is do what I say..or else!!!

Republicans believe in the health of all individuals, not just one while another is aborted. And just because we don;t want to pay for the abortions doesn't mean we give a crud if Latonya wants to have one...let her pay for it herself. This lady is honest and states her belief, the other one lies and takes the big salary.

You are right! dont give a dime until they come clean.
If you donate for the cure, donate to the american cancer society.

You pay the $35 dollar fee to walk around and raise money for breast cancer. Then these women walk around in $8,000.00 designer dresses and hob nob in exclusive restaurants and then decide to become a political organisation instead of funding breast exams which is what you paid the $35 for.
    • Krb  •  Portland, Oregon  •  3 months ago
No mention of the fact that Nancy Brinker was paid $511,000 last year. Thats lots of breast exams.
    • Y  •  Camden, New Jersey  •  3 months ago
ya know, i've been saying for awhile now that breast cancer awareness took a much less serious turn and became more of a fad, so to speak. we have pink shirts, pink flowers, pink shoes, hats, buttons, walks, pink stripes in people's hair, and it just got blown way out of control. it's hard NOT to imagine this organization or a branch of it wanting to have a slice of that kind of a gold mine. money is indeed the root of all evil.

She continued. "The last time I checked, this is a private, non-profit org that has every right -- every right -- to set its standards the way they choose to set it in the best interests of this organization."
She's right on that score - And it's our right to not give to SKG either. I wonder how their going to pay their half-million dollar salaries without any donations?
    • RAZOR  •  3 months ago
75% of their revenues never reach women with breast cancer ? It is sickening that the CEO makes 400k per year, a sum that needs to be reduced by at least 60%.

To all reading my comment: Better to donate your money and time to helping those who have fallen on hard times who are unemployed, have no money, no home and need the help. These organizations are bloodsuckers who are out for themselves instead of helping the victims of these diseases. I have seen far too many of these execs. from places like PP, Komen and United Cerebral Palsy living lavish lifestyles with the best of everything and laughing all the way to the bank on YOUR MONEY.

Less about curing cancer than brand recognition and exclusive contracts $500,000 salary for the Pink queen!

Wait, is she actually blaming Planned Parenthood for the donor backlash at a decision that the Komen board made? In everything that I have read on this Planned Parenthood didn't call for an outcry, they simply said that was unfortunate that Komen pulled their funding. The people rose up and cried out on their own. Komen has a choice as to who and what they give their money to. I respect that. The donors to Komen also have that same choice. Its called a Free Market and a conservative like Karen Handel should know that. Then again she really isn't a true conservative.

The good thing is that so much has been exposed about the Komen organization. Now, we can make better informed decisions regarding our donations.
    • 56hornet  •  3 months ago
If you don't agree with Komen's decision, stop funding. When the funds go away, so will everyone else.
    • It's Olllld Buso Ragu ...  •  3 months ago
Everybody, Komen is not unique. The MAJORITY of the non-profit sector engages in the very same practices with the very same code of ethics...the grand majority of them are hustles and tax shelters. ALWAYS ask how much really goes to the affected group. You'll be shocked.

I will never support Komen again. Brinker pays herself 500k a year, now that's charity!
    • RAZOR  •  3 months ago
The NFL will distance itself from Komen in the future, as will many more sponsors. Too much drama.
    • Highly Recommend  •  Ontario, California  •  3 months ago
I'm guessing that before this most poeple didn't know there was even a connection betweeen the two organizations. Now everyone knows and I expect to see Komen's donations decrease drastically. PR nightmare.

The fact that Karen Handel was making hundreds of thousands of dollars shows you how screwed up the non-profit situation is!
