Health Controversy: Do You Admire Stars Who Honestly Confess Drug Use or Would You Rather They Just Kept Quiet?

    By Sarah Jio, Glamour magazine

Lady Gaga is making headlines (again) about her alleged drug use. While nothing about the singer shocks me these days, I was a little off-put by her casual admission to a cocaine habit. I wondered how you reacted. Weigh in ...

Lady Gaga spilled the beans about her cocaine use in the new issue of Vanity Fair. US Weekly got the early scoop and reveals that she's "terrified of heroin" but still does "mostly cocaine."

"I won't lie; it's occasional," she says in the magazine's September issue. "And when I say occasional, I mean maybe a couple of times a year."

She tells the magazine she doesn't condone drug use in any way. "I do not want my fans to ever emulate that or be that way," says the singer. "I don't want my fans to think they have to be that way to be great."

She goes on to hint that her drug use was in the past, yet her statements above speak to the contrary, as if she still occasionally partakes.

Honestly? This bugs me on some level when people speak so casually about such destructive drug use.

    Thoughts?

There is no such thing as using cocaine twice a year. Stupid b---- !

I do not think it's appropriate to talk about current drug use. However, if a star, or anybody for that matter, has had a drug problem in the past which they have overcome I think it should definitely be talked about. There are so many drugs addicts in this world who think that their way of life is the only way for them and they can never get out. It would be better if they saw celebs who had overcome, rather than someone they can relate to, making them feel better about their own addictions. I was a junkie until three years ago. I know what I'm talking about.

Lets get one thing straight. It is very hard to just use the smack once or twice a year. She is using this for atention so people go oh poor baby let buy another one of your albums. I have growen up around musicial talent. I have watched it Break up bands including two of my past bands one of which our vocalist went up the highway going the wrong way killing people while he was hop up on crack. I have watched it tear Family members apart, as well as friends. How in anyway she is using this for fame is nuts. Take a look at all the old time musicians "THEY DON"T BRAG ABOUT DRUGE USE" People who brag or are the first to say they have a problem tend not to have one. When is thig ugly no talent b---- gonna go away. I hope she dose do drugs it just ups the % that she will OD and that will be the end of this s---, but that dosn't matter the shock value of her is waring off so her 15 is alomost over. f--- Gaga and f--- her dumb fans. Take away the makeup the glammy show and everything else and your stuck with a ugly jew who can't sign to save her life.

I do not want to hear about other people breaking the law and not being punished! Unless they are stepping up to the plate and taking their punishment MUM'S THE ONLY WORD that the offenders should utter on this.

Since when is doing a small amount of a drug in the privacy of your own home as little as once or twice a year destructive? Oh yeah, forgot I was in Puritan America. Forgive me for my outburst.

Just because she says she uses only twice a year doesn't mean that's the truth, people. She may very well have a serious addiction and doesn't want to taint her celebrity status right now by admitting it. Anyone who uses drugs even occasionally has a problem--I have been through it with a close relative, so I know this to be true. What she is doing is NOT okay, and she needs professional help to get over her "need" or "desire" to use drugs.

Keep it to themselves. What's the point of telling the world, and then telling "fans" (for lack of a better word) to not do drugs? Sounds pretty messed up to me. Why say anything? But artists are in their own little world anyway. They seem to have the view that they are looked up to, when in reallity, they're not.

I've observed that, typically, those who use coke need it to inflate their egos & feel powerful. Those who use pot often are irritable, anxious & easily agitated without it. Sometimes even with it.

Dabbling in drugs or booze is one thing. But if you're the type of person who lacks accountability & is good at justifying your behavior, you won't be just dabbling in drugs or booze for long. It'll be your new favorite friend that helps you cope with things you don't want to deal with, and escape from the realities of your life in general.

When anyone discloses their drug or alcohol use, to a certain extent, they're asking for help. Some are also so insecure that they have a desperate need for external validation & attention. It's one reason why the approach to drug addiction therapy can be very similar to eating disorder therapy.

I would rather they keep their drug use, medical conditions, past marriage "secrets", affairs, and anything else they feel they must share with us after a "life changing experience." It is none of our business what goes on their personal lives. I actually find it quite presumptous that they would think we should care.

why can't you use cocaine just a few times a year?

For the sake of anonymity, lets just say I know somone who has used another hard drug (meth) at exactly that rate. if you aren't addicted, you just aren't.

I like that she's being honest and as long as she's not promoting the use. We're only all human. What would impress me most is if they admit it and they try to stop the habits. Other than that, no strong opinion. Do keep in mind some of our favorite songs were probably written while the artists were on a high. Hehe...

I love her and think it's awesome that she does cocaine. Classiest drug IMO!

First: it is possibly (anything is possible) to only try a drug here and there and not be addicted, if you try something its not an automatic body response to be addicted, those who think that probably havent tried drugs or are themselves an addictive personality.
2nd: I agree with Nancy, we should applaud her for being honest (even if she sugar coated the 'real' truth) she said it. Many stars have been known to do drugs, Ive heard Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake smoke weed, well what else have they done that hasnt been said. Many celebrities dont want the negative stigma of drug use so they hide it. For once someone is laying it out there. Everyone needs to get over Lady GAGA, she is a free b---- baby!! xoxo monster

      Sandy-
Beer isn't illegal, but can be addictive, many people drink it and many people abuse it however when people drink here and there is your first thought "oh you're an alcholic" no, it isnt. (im guessing) \

And to knock someone for admitting drug use but then applauding them for admitting their triumph over drug use seems to be hypocritical. I like to think that honesty is the best policy despite the content :)

She clearly does not have an addiction. So I wouldn't label her occasional drug use as destructive. I would say that she partakes in illegal activities from time to time. That being said there are people out there who have a predisposition to addiction and occasional drug use can spiral into an addiction for them. But let's not generalize.
    • whylime  •  1 year 9 months ago
I think it sends that wrong message because it suggests drug use can be only occasional. All drug addictions start out like that. She should keep her mouth her shut.

Do I admire stars whop admit to drug use? No, but there are very few "stars" that I admire for any reason at all.

What I do respect is someone famous who admits to a past wrong and then corrects it, genuinely changing his or her behavior. Robert Downey, Jr, for instance, is a well-known recovering addict. At long last, he seems to be getting himself put together and is putting out the kind of work he is capable of - and it's really good. No one is without flaw and everyone makes mistakes, but the ability to recognize those mistakes and do your best to rectify them is definitely worthy of respect, and maybe even a little admiration.
    • Sandy  •  1 year 9 months ago
Agreeing with Mysterious Gryphon. I admire people who have overcome drug abuse and are now getting their lives back together.

Nancy, the last time I checked, having a beer isn't illegal. However, cocaine use is...

Twice a year is destructive drug use? Wow! Does that mean if I have a beer every Friday I should be in rehab?
No, it shouldnt be condoned but seriously, wouldn't you rather admire someone who is honest that they have flaws than the rest of the hollywood peeps with fakeness real people can never aspire to be? I think we'd all be stunned at the people who society looks up to that partake every once in a while in something taboo. I'm not a big fan of LG, but I respect her honesty.
    • Melanie R  •  1 year 9 months ago
I am a big fan of hers and I believe that she is talking directly to her fans about her use. While she used to be a heavy drug user, she has since got help from her family. She probably now just uses it occasionally for her pleasure or creativity. I don't agree with her doing drugs but with fame, media, etc many entertainers use it to get away from reality. She, at least, isn't hiding the fact that she does it. She doesn't have an addiction like other celebrities and then try to hide it. She is being upfront and honest to her fans.
