Health Controversy: Some Say These Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets Are Obscene

    By Sarah Jio, Glamour magazine

It's a given that teachers and administrators want their students to understand the risk factors for breast cancer and bring awareness to the disease that has touched so many lives. And yet, when one group of students tried to do something about it by wearing breast cancer awareness bracelets, school administrators called them obscene ...

The latest outcry at schools across the country doesn't have to do with cell phones, texting, racy music or clothing--nope, it has to do with what kids are trying to do to bring awareness to breast cancer.

There's no love for the message on a 1-inch thick rubber bracelet, ABC News reports, with the message "I love boobies." The bracelets are part of a nationwide campaign launched several months ago to help teens become more aware of breast cancer. They were designed by the Keep A Breast foundation, a non-profit based in California with a mission "to "help eradicate breast cancer by exposing young people to methods of prevention, early detection and support."

South Dakota's Baltic High School recently banned the bracelets, along with other schools in California and Florida.

"When we had an assembly the first day of school, I basically told the students we were not insensitive to the cause," Baltic High Principal Jim Aisenbrey told USA Today. "I do think there are more proper ways to bring this plight to the attention of people, and I don't think this is a proper way."

Do you think these bracelets are in poor taste, or are they doing what they should be: getting people to talk? Would you wear a bracelet like this?

whats the big deal about the bracelets?!?!! it raises awareness for breastcancer month.....it isnt offensive to anyone1 crud i would proudly wear one. my mom, my aunt, and my cousin are proud breast cancer survivors and i would love to buy one of these bracelets and show my support (as well as doing race for the cure for the past going to be 5 yrs next yr). well said giz! there are more important stuff to be worried bout in school. (teen preg. all of the other things that you mentioned).

Tom: I see their point of view initially, but think that after the initial shock they should have realized they had more important issues to deal with and let it go. When I was in high school they told my gay friend he couldn't wear his I heart boys shirt.... They actually made him change regardless of the fact that girls wore those shirts everyday. This is no less ridiculous.

I hope that the schools who have banned these bracelets also are banning "Hooters" t-shirts as part of their dress code. I just picked my son up from high school last week, and sure enough, some kid in the cafeteria walked by me wearing one.

Thank you closet-freak Puritans and their modern counterparts for turning mammary glands into sexual objects and then demonizing them!

The statement of "I love boobies" is a cheap gimmick. If it's acceptable to subscribe to the "ends justify the means" concept of tricking our teenagers and children into "caring" about a cause, then fine. I don't personally agree with that, but plenty of people do.

What I REALLY have a problem with? I took about ten seconds to look up the product and see that ONLY 50% of the PROFITS go to the "Keep a Breast Foundation." Another ten seconds is all it takes to see that the "Keep a Breast Foundation," while it's a non-profit, does nothing but raise funds to promote breast cancer AWARENESS and stress the importance of self exams for early detection. That's all well and fine, but it also doesn't do SINGLE thing to find an actual cure for breast cancer, or even less invasive treatments for it. How many posters have defended this product by saying it's for breast cancer RESEARCH? Well, in fact, it isn't.

The bottom line is this product is first and foremost a capitalistic money making scheme. The manufacturers are making a profit, and not a red cent of the PORTION of that profit that they donate is going to breast cancer research. Use your brains, people. Teach your own daughters, sisters, mothers, cousins, friends, etc the importance of self exams (and take advantage of the wealth of FREE information on the subject online, in schools and in medicinal facilities) and donate money to ACTUAL research to find a cure rather than some cheap rubber band with an intentionally provocative "message."

they need to get over them selves!! wtf you are going to band them because they are obsene what is that? schools are taking it a little to far just like the kids that wore the flag shirts to school that were sent home wtf this is a free counrty after all!! freedom of speech!! we all love boobies beacause in some way or another someone has been affected by breast cancer or any cancer for that matter the next thing you know they will ban pink!!

Supporting breast cancer research is about saving lives not boobs....the teens totally miss the point.

p.s. i'll be waiting to see the article that gets written when there is a lawsuit filed about this
    • unknown  •  1 year 8 months ago
ehh, I think they are poor taste (and I wouldn't wear it and certainly wouldn't care if my kid wore it)but I would never ban someone for wearing them. If some kid (or their parent) contributes to breast cancer researh--that's all I care about

I think this whole thing is a"tempest in a C-cup"! Another case of witless "educators" making stupid rules to confuse the kids about what's really important. Like the time they suspended a kid for bringing a two inch toy model of a rifle to school because the school had a rule against weapons.Where do they get these idiots from who are supposed to be teaching our kids. From State Abnormal Schools??!!

Go there to get the bracelets. I don't care if kids are buying these because they have the word "boobies" on them, I'm just glad they're being purchased.
    • AC  •  1 year 8 months ago
Of all the things to worry about, these bracelets should not even reach the list! Breast cancer is a growing issue and all young women should be aware of how to self-examine and should at least know the basics. Men, too.

I am proud to say that one of my favorite t-shirts says "Save the Ta-Tas". I wonder what those schools would think of that?
    • Jimena  •  1 year 8 months ago
Hey, we should get bracelets too that say 'I love testicles!" then! After all, testicular cancer is a very important issue as well.

But, for some reason, I don't think this would ever happen. I sense the smell of hyprocrites.

In all seriousness though, those bracelets are really ugly and teenagers are buying them for the specific purpose that they contain the word "boobies" on it, when those pink bracelets that have been around for years were already doing a fine job. I'm all for awareness, but I think this was an immature campaign that wasn't thought all the way through.

Really? we can have Snooki and the rest of the Jersey Shore uhh "people" all over tv yet this is obscene? *chuckles* ahhh good lord. Hopefully it will teach these kids to find a way to fight for what they believe in. Enough times in life they will be told by "someone" they can't do something because it goes against the grain or by some organizations ideas of what we should or should not do. Its sad but also a great learning opportunity for the kids to find a way. What actually is sad is this experience will probably shy alot of them away from doing something about a topic that is important to them.

Imagine yourself in a classroom of 34 eleven year olds. You are trying to teach them all of the standards required while they are passing around bracelets and giggling. They call out the name of a less than developed eleven year old girl and point to their bracelets, then laugh and say "oh, you wouldn't know."
That is the reason I took them away from my students. Not because they are profane, but because they can be misused and distracting.
