Health folklore: Do you believe in the power of a full moon?

Are you suspicious about full moons? I know people who swear that more crimes are committed, more babies are conceived and born, and more people are admitted to hospitals on nights where the moon is full. And when my sister told me her prediction--that my baby would be born on December 12 (next Friday!), when a full moon is predicted, I wondered what research had to say on the topic--and what you thought, too...

    ****
Let me preface this by telling you that I am probably the least superstitious person I know. Cemeteries don't even freak me out. But I was a little spooked at what I read about full moons and how they affect human behavior.

Past studies suggest that some wacky things happen when a full moon is in the sky. For instance, University of Miami researchers analyzed crime data over the course of 15 years in the Miami area and found that violent crime was more likely to be committed on--you guessed it--full-moon nights. Still more studies have suggested that full moons bring out other scary behaviors, such as arson, risky driving and kleptomania. (Would you dare try this daring stunt during a full moon?)

But what about our health? One British study found that more people visit hospitals or make doctor appointments in the days preceding a full moon. Even so, the researchers have no idea why.

As far as more babies being born on days where the moon is full, I haven't found any solid evidence. But, I did talk to a few delivery room nurses a few years ago who swore that full moons brought in more deliveries than regular nights. So, I guess I'll have to wait until December 12 to see if the prediction is true for me!

What do you think about full moons and the supposed connection to human behavior? Do you buy it or think it's a bunch of baloney? Or, do you have any crazy-but-true full moon stories? If so, share! And, what's your prediction for my delivery? Will Vitamin G's first baby be born on a full-moon night?

HELLO, DID NOT READ THROUGH ALL THE COMMENTS... BUT I WORK AT A MENTAL HEALTH HOSPITAL,AND EVERY FULL MOON THE BEHAVIOR IS OUT OF CONTROL!!! THE PT'S DONT SLEEP AND ROAM THE HALLS AND MAKE EXTRA THREATS AND ARE EXTRA DELUSIONAL STATEMENTS ETC... I KNOW WHAT IT IS... WHEN THE MOON RADIATES AT IS FULLNESS IT IS GIVING EARTH FULL POWER OF ENERGY/NIGHT-LIGHT... IF ONE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO HARVEST THIS GREAT ENERGY, IT COULD MAKE ON TEMPORARILY MAD/SICK..ETC... THE MOON IS NOT ONLY FULL , BUT CLOSER TO EARTH AT THIS TIME/OR SHOULD I EARTH IS CLOSER... I HOPE THIS ANSWERS SOME QUESTIONS.... ITS ALL ABOUT ENERGY... BE WELL-TR

DEFINITELY THE MOON MAKES THE FANGS COME OUT. HOW DO YA THINK THE WEREWOLF CAME TO BE?

Our bodies are 75% water and the Moon acts like a magnet to the Earth which is also 75% water, thus, "WE" ebb and tide with the moons cycle:)
As a Moon Child, I personally react to the moon's cycle with either a very "high" or "low" attitude and emotionals.

If this is your first baby, I predict you will be two weeks later than your due date. Full moon or not.

As for full moons altering human behavior or labor and delivery, the one thing I do find plausable is that the moon does alter the great bodies of water on the earth via gravitational pull. So its not hard for me to believe that it could cause labor in a very pregnant woman. Good luck!

First of all, congratulations on the new baby!! Second, Yes, I do believe that a full moon influences a person's behavior. I not really superstitious but I do work in a mental residential facility. On full moon nights our clients are much more restless and rowdy. Take it for what it's worth?!

In general I think the earth and beings are affected by all the goings on up in space. The moon being the closest body affects us the most. Back in October I had a few "off" days where I felt I was't communicating to people what I was trying to say. I found myself engaging in arguments that I normally would have avoided and physically I just felt off. When I explained all that to a friend they told there was a great explanation -Mars was in retrograde. After some quick research, that theory seemed to explain the phenomena. Very cool stuff....so we can take some of the blame off our hormones and put it in the sky!

PS:JUST LIKE TOO MUCH SUN IN THE DESERT WILL MAKE ONE DELUSIONAL, SEE THINGS ETC... THATS WHEN THE SUN IS GIVING OFF ITS FULL POWER/HEAT... THATS WHY ALOT OF PEOPLE STAY IN WHEN ITS A FULL MOON OR REAL HOT OUT SIDE(NOT TOO MENTION THE BURN) BE WELL-TR

The moon tends to represent the Mother and Goddess in most pagan religions. I think there is a reason. Hasn't your mother ever caused you to do crazy things?

i must agree......when the moon is full....I do tend to get a bit... restless

I teach. Full moons DEFINITELY affect behavior in children. I usually don't pay attention to the lunar cycle but let me tell you - I can tell when the moon is full. Weird, Weird, Weird behavior from the most unlikely sources. Sometimes it is rather humorous though (especially when its not happening in my class LOL)

I have worked in the restaurant business for 10 years now, I can tell you hands down that the full moon affects human behavior, I have seen more outlandish behavior and all around strangeness (from guests, managers, and staff) on full moons than any other time of the month. I am a true believer only from seeing, first hand, the transformation of people especially when you get them in a busy atmosphere. there is def a gravitational pull that affects your body chemistry, its along the same lines as the high tide being extra high during a full moon. its amazing, so expect your baby in a few days!

as i see it the moon affects water and since our body is made up of lots of water i dont see how it could not affect us,good or bad, i just hope you have a safe delivery and a healthy baby to love forever

I beleive it. I owned a bar in our town and I could count on lots of fights and police calls when the moon was full. West Side Lounge, J.C. IL

I tended bar for many, many years and I worked in the food service more years than that and I will swear that the full moon does indeed affect people's behavior.

I used to work in a nursing home a couple years ago. Let me tell you that when the moon was full you knew it.. 1 reason i say this is because the residents were wild. Their behavior was different from what is would be if the moon wasn't full. I am not sure how the moon would have an effect on people like this but that is my experience with the whole moon thing. Thank you and Congratulations on the baby!

My dogs act so weird during full moons. They get rowdy at night and arent even allowed inside on full moon nights because they will chew and whine and bark. They are really sweet calm dogs otherwise. I heard the moon affects many other animals. More girls have sex I think on full moons. We get hornier.
