    Healthy Food, Fast

New York City is number one again - this time they're the first city in the U.S. to require major fast food restaurants to post the calorie content of all their menu items. The chains have had nutrition facts available for a long time, but now the calories are actually posted - prominently.

Here's an example of calorie content for some popular choices: a Big Mac with medium fries and a medium soda contains 1130 calories, according to the McDonald's menu. A Whopper with medium fries and a medium coke has "only" 1040, according to Burger King's Web site.

    Aging Backwards Fast Food Tips:

    1) Look for salads on the menu. Most fast food restaurants offer a few healthy choices, including salads, but go easy on the amount of dressing you use and skip the cheese and croutons, or use only half.

    2) Lose the bun. A hamburger actually provides decent protein - it's the bun that has little or no nutritional value. Eat the hamburger with some lettuce, tomato and mustard without the bun or include the top or bottom half of the bun if you must have bread.

    3) Avoid "special" sauces. Most fast food sauces are mayonnaise-based, which can add lots of unnecessary fat and calories to your meal. Order your food without the sauce or with the sauce on the side and use only half.

    4) Order water. Even diet sodas have been shown to contribute to metabolic syndrome, the precursor to type II diabetes, so stick with water, which is sometimes even free.

    5) Don't shake. Fast food typically contains a fair amount of salt, so adding more salt is unnecessary and unhealthy. Studies show that people who consume high amounts of salt are at risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and even stomach cancer.

Making healthy choices at the fast food restaurant can start you on your way to Aging Backwards.

I've found Subway a reasonably healthy choice but even better, bring your own food. For example, I find a yogurt, a salad or piece of fruit, and some water or iced tea is usually plenty to keep me going. It takes a while (like about three days) to get adjusted to the new diet, but a light meal helps avoid the afternoon snoozies. Some grapes or an orange can help in the late afternoon but this is usually not necessary. Processed sugars seem to be self-defeating and just makes the hungries come back about an hour after eating or drinking them.

If you must have a soda, fill the cup with ice, then soda. You'll finish the soda, but have the sensation of having a full soda. Then you can finish the rest of your 'flavored' ice at your leisure.
Fast-food outlets should take a hint from AM/PMs which now offer crushed ice at soda dispensers. It offers a crunching and drinking sensation... with NO calories.

A good option for fast food that is not too high in calories or fat is a 6 inch Turkey Sub on wheat roll without cheese at Subway. I load up on veggies in the sub and ask for spicy brown mustard( never mayo). This totals only 5 points on the Weight Watcher plan and it is very yummy and filling.

Fast Food places HATE when you order water, unless you are buying one of their like mcburger brand bottles of water (and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that those were just loaded with fat haha) when I've done this, I get a lot of crappy attitudes and in most cases a tiny, unsatisfying cup of mostly ice. I think the worst was one time I ordered water from a taco bell and they gave me something that looked like those little cups you get from a water cooler. only plastic and full of ice. I got literally three drinks of water.

Also, a lot of the tips above don't apply if, like me, you get the fast food to eat in your car on the way to your next errand or whatever. I just try to order the grilled chicken things with mustard. they taste mediocre and are still kinda bad for you, so it's kinda like failing both ways, but they're quick and filling enough.

Hey, btw, anyone else notice the switcheroo some of the places have done? used to be the combos came with medium fries and drink. then there was the thing where you could upsize for a little more, and now all of a sudden they're back to asking what size you want, and the combo price only covers the small size. so the upsize cost only gets you back to what you would've been getting before (medium) and to get the big stuff you have to pay even more! not that it matters because the small size currently is what the large size used to be, and still is in a lot of countires.

Like, seriously are those combos even a price break anymore? it seems like you used to be able to order a burger, fries and a drink all seperate for about 5 bucks. the combos came along and were supposed to like save money or whatever, but now you can hardly even get one of those without paying 6 to 8 bucks! and for that price, I can usually get a nice lunch in a little cafe or deli or whatever. So I pay non premium prices to sit in a line for 10 mins and get food that is horrible for me and often doean't even taste that good, from people who hate their jobs and make sure I know it!

And the worst part is... I CAN"T STOP GOING!!! I'm addicted! Dammit, like a glutton for punishment!

sigh... it was good to get all that out. ta!

Even at McDonalds, I can get my Son a Happy Meal, nuggets, apple dippers and juice box, pretty healthy, and I always order the clasic grilled chicken sandwich, which comes on a delicious multigrain bun, I order it with mustard instead of mayo, and add pickles for some xtra zing, and water. Not Bad eh?

If you wanna eat healthy don't go to a fast food restaurant. Not that difficult.

Maybe someone already mentioned this..., but if you're choosing to eat only half of the hamburger bun to reduce empty calories, definitely chose the top. The bottom is often in direct contact with the burger and seems to soak up lots of liquid lard when the meat lands there.

I used to go to a dietician about these problems. I asked her what I could do because it's so confusing about what to eat fast-foodwise and what not. I was told that I could go to Subway and get a six-inch turkey sub with lots of vegetables. Then I found most of them serve fat-free Italian dressing packets. I get those too instead of the Mayo and other sauces. It's really good and it's filling. And if I go Burger King, I can get a small vegee burger and a small fries and a diet drink. I found that works pretty good in a pinch.

This is a stupid article- uh, don't we already know all those thing? BTW- the words "eating healthy" and "fast food" don't go together- such an oxymoron!

You can also start making mental notes of where your lesser of two evils is located. Subway, El Pollo, ready made meals at grocery stores, there not great but they help you survive.

I'll take a whole rotissere chicken and some fruit that I can eat today and save the rest for a quick meal/snack tomorrow over Mcd's anyday.

When eating your fries, squeeze them a little with your napkin first. You'll be amazed how much grease comes out.

Ok,I know that fast food is horrible for you but this article isn't really about how to make fast food better,it's more about how to make fast food not fast food anymore.People don't always eat fast food because it is there only option, they eat it alot of times because of the way it tastes.I mean if you do the above things then your going to wind up eating a "salad" that's no more than a pile of lettuce and nothing else.Or if you do happen to order a burger your going to be eating a bunless, sauceless, pile of meat with a piece of lettuce on top that costed you about $5 and a free cup of tap water to go with it.YUM (not!).People don't need to go to extremes like the above to be able to eat fast food.If you have to get fast food that day just try not to really eat much of anything else bad for you,or anything, to help balance it out.And if you if you can't help yourself but to eat fast food all the time ,or tell people you "have to",then I wouldn't be worring so much about the content of your food as much as the fact that you obviously have an addiction. No one HAS to eat fast food, ever!Get real help don't just "loose the bun"!

There are few things more ridiculous and useless than articles like this. A friggin side salad is not a MEAL. Twist of lemon? Are we so afraid to eat that this is what we have dissolved to? How about you show some moderation, exercise moderately, pack a lunch for work or school, and then when you stop at a fast food place you can eat whatever the hell you want. Who goes to McDonalds for SALAD. For me and my family it's a treat/easy way out on the rare occasions I don't feel like cooking. If I want a bunless burger I'll throw one on the skillet for 5 min. Also diet soda is probably the worst thing you can drink, and paying for bottled tap water (read THOSE studies) has always seemed to me especially redundant.

These are great tips to eat healthy even when eating out! It's so hard now with this gi-normous portions you get just so the restaurant can charge you more! I love the double bonus of saving money and keeping healthy by ordering water. Do you know that most places charge close to $2 for a soda? I can buy 2 2-litre bottles for that at the grocery store!

I recently blogged about staying slim while eating out at Prevention.com. I add some additional tips you may find useful:
