Heidi Montag works out 14 hours-a-day. Isn't that dangerous?

Image Credit: Denise Truscello/WireImage.comImage Credit: Denise Truscello/WireImage.comHere's a day in the life of Heidi Montag: lift weights, run, repeat. For the past two months, the reality star has been exercising from 5 in the morning to 7 at night. "I've been working out really hard because I had this pool party and I was like, 'I have to be in shape,'" she told US Weekly.

But a 14 hour daily workout? It shouldn't really be a surprise, considering her compulsive decision to have a record
10 plastic surgery operations in one day to resculpt her face and body in 2009. She even had her back scooped.

Now she's dropped from 130 to 103 pounds by running and weightlifting, turning several of those pounds into rippling abdomen muscle. If she wants to land the cover of a fitness magazine, she's got it in the bag. (And the Montag-Pratts like their magazine covers). But is that kind of extreme exercise as dangerous as getting extreme plastic surgeries?

"If you're working out 14 hours a day, something is going to blow," Dr. Sharon Chirban, a Harvard psychologist, who hasn't treated Montag, tells CBS News. "Most of the compulsive exercisers I've worked with end up with an injury, and then everything falls apart because they can't exercise."

For women, over exercising is particularly problematic. It can create a hormone imbalance halting menstruation and making bones brittle. There's also a condition called "staleness" where the positive effects of exercise turn into depression and fatigue, according to Dr. Pauline Powers,
author of The Exercise Balance about exercise compulsion.

The desire to take control of your body and process what you ate obsessively through workouts can also be symptomatic of an eating disorder like, bulimia or anorexia. Like most addictions the warning signs are clear: if exercising interferes with your life, if you can't go a day without it, and if you find yourself exercising through injury or illness, it's a real problem.

Montag's 14-hour-ritual is a long way from the 30 minutes a day the Mayo Clinic recommends for aerobic exercise, but there's no set limit for what the body can do. For instance, the Tour De France bikers can put in 14 hour days and exhibit perfect, even stellar, health, according to a new study. But trained athletes aren't carrying a radically reformed figure like Montag.

It's taken her a year just to be able to work out, much less eat a burger, without being in pain. Now she's found a new way to push her body. Abs that come from sit-ups are better than abs that come from implants-at least it's real muscle tissue and not another artificial substance added to the layers in her body. But why hasn't she learned from the surgery(and the backlash) that too much of one thing is just too much? She may not learn from her mistakes, but we do.

As far as Eryn goes and everyone ripping on her... when you work hard and have great results are you not proud of yourself? Do you not like the attention you receive b/c all that hard work has paid off? So why should it be different b/c it's her body that she's proud of? I can understand why it may rub some ppl the wrong way but I completely understand what kind of WORK it takes to acheive a great body, it's not BAD to feel good about yourself. I don't think she's being immodest, this post is directly related to what she's got to say. I don't have time to go through and read all the comments, so I could've missed something.

Eryn_Lindsey, I don't know why people are attacking you. I don't see anything wrong with what you've posted. Morons!

Wow, people are mean. Heidi does need therapy; that's obvious from all the surgeries she had. And like somebody mentioned, she needs to move from LA to somewhere else where most people are not a size zero.

Heidi's comments were probably exaggerated. She may work out for 14 hours. once at 7 a.m, once at 12 p.m., like that. There is NO way she exercises for 14 hours. Yes, she has a six-pack, but she wasn't fat to begin with. Now that I am at the weight I should be, I am starting to see my ab muscles now that I've lost the fat that was covering it. I was working out 5 days a week for 30 min., now I do 30 min. 3-4 times a week. So Eryn's comments are likely true. Thinner people with less fat take less work to get a six-pack.

Ridiculous. She would not have time for anything else ... including taking care of two kids.

Onesey, twosey, who's got my shoesey. Understand?

      I think she was exaggerating.

There's no way it's 14 consecutive hours of working out a day. That's something I'd have to see to believe. I can understand someone saying they work out 4-8 hours a day because some people do and I have at times worked out up to 3 hours in a given day, but 14? I don't know about that.

      Is she a real person?

Goooood gravy, I checked in on this article to see if there were any suggestions on my last comment on how to get tone up that flabby "pooch" area we women have come to know and loathe... but see this fighting from yesterday is still going on! The hatred in some of these comments is UNREAL! I don't use Shine all the time but I do see some recognizable screen names from time to time. Some are very blunt and tend to stir up other comments. Just like in real life. I've seen posts from Eryn before and she definitely does seem to be one that speaks her mind from what I can tell. But people, even if someone tends to be very outspoken in their posts or comments to people, cutting down a picture of someone and saying they have an ugly face is just LOW. I mean, seriously?? People don't always agree with each other in forums like this but it gives us no reason to attack others. (Angie, I'm referring to you here...) Sad. Very, very sad.

Eryn, I also got kind of a bragging impression off of your posts, though not enough that I'd mark you as cruel or superior... just a little insensitive. I am not lazy, do not I eat heavily, work out regularly and yet I'm stuck with my chubby body. Sometimes you're just stuck with the cards nature dealt you, and no amount of eating right/exercise can drastically change it.

That said, Angie, if you thought Eryn's tone was bragging, what in the world does that make YOUR tone? Your posts were way out of line. There is no need to be cruel and pick apart her appearance or mental state, especially since that's precisely what you attached HER for doing. If you really think she's so pathetic (not saying she is but if that's your opinion) shouldn't you be compassionate, as opposed to sneering and superior?

But really...whatever...think of me as mean... the people who know me know better. I wont lose sleep at night if a few people on the internet don't like me. *shrug*
Maybe you should re-read many of my comments on other blogs, and realize you're jumping to conclusions, lol. Oh well!
    • Eryn_Lindsay  •  11 months ago
lol, I think you're taking all your "proof of me being mean" from that one post. I may "start fights" with my opinions of lying to your children being wrong (i.e santa clause and the tooth fairy), or say that I think all the dresses someone posted are quite hideous...as many people post, but I dont run around here insulting people. NEVER other commenters. I express my thoughts about articles... I dont need to rip on other people posting comments.

OMG I cannot believe this attack is still going this morning.
Angie- you are a out of control. Why are you investing so much time attacking?
One word, Jealous! Evil mean and cruel!

Exersize! PLEASE, she had like tons of surgery. If she excersized 14 hours a day she would be Riped [ & looking like Taylor Launtner] She like a living Barbie doll; and not the one you'd want to look up too!
    • HotMom  •  11 months ago
Wow Eryn_Lindsay! You've got a lot of haters. I've read all your posts and I'm not sure what you said to offend so many people but I went to your link and I think you look great. It's always interesting to me how many people become offended when a fit, confident woman says she is. Somehow you're "full of yourself" and "bragging". Why shouldn't you be proud of your accomplishments? It was hard work and you did it. Stand tall, say it loud and be proud.

As to poor Heidi M., isn't it obvious that 1)She's an attention seeker and 2)She has some sort of disorder regarding how she views herself. I seriously doubt she is actually exercising 14 hours a day, but I do feel sorry for her that her self esteem is such that she needs to constantly "upgrade" her body. I think she was much prettier before.

Heyas Marty, just want to throw out a quick note, not sure if you're going to read anymore on here or not :P Don't blame ya if you don't. Check what you're eating, sounds like your body's maybe reacting to something you're eating that it can't handle. Maybe wheat(I saw you mention that as part of your diet), or dairy, or something like that. :)

It's bull$&^% is what it is. Honestly, does anyone even begin to believe this?
    • Rasp  •  11 months ago
I agree with Caleb, she needs to get out LA. I don't want to play into this too much but if you watched The Hills, Heidi moved to LA and LA overtook Heidi, so much that she got so much surgery on her body. I too feel sorry for her and there's always time to get focused on being truly who you are.

Guys...Ease up on Eryn. She simply said that she was in good shape, and according to the pictures she shared, she's not lying. I wish my arms looked half that good.
We don't all need to rip each other apart. I think I've been overly critical of some Shine commenters in the past, and that was wrong of me. Let's all get along :)
