    Hollywood starlets on steroids?

    By Billy Norwich

    "Tsk-Tsk," Says Dr. Pat Wexler

Think it's only A-Rod and his pals who are taking steroids? Well, what about that actress who buffs up for an action film and cites a carrot juice diet? Sound suspect? Well, that's because it could be …

The increasing pressure on celebrities, both male and female, athletes and actors, singers and dancers, to be perfect pushes them to extreme measures, and some will take anything they can to get an edge on the competition.

Besides illegal steroids, there is the business of using Human Growth Hormone, which can be legally prescribed, to slow and possibly reverse the aging process.

According to an April, 2007, New York Times report, some "25,000 to 30,000 Americans take injections of growth hormone for anti-aging purposes, paying up to $1,000 a month." A certain percentage of those folks, of course, are stars - the people many of us admire. And Dr. Patricia Wexler does not approve:

"Human Growth Hormone is unsafe. I know dermatologists and actresses who use it to slim abdominal fat and increase muscle tone and libido. But it can accelerate also a hidden cancer to grow. It can cause funny bone spurs to grow and enlargement of the heart … just to name a few of the many reasons why I consider it unsafe."

In other words, when you think you hear the fountain of youth gushing, get a second opinion.

I recommend watching "Bigger, Strong, Faster" a documentary on performance enchanting drugs and how they relate to our culture. The bottom line is not enough research has been completed to draw any types of conclusions. And yet somehow it is still legal to smoke cigarettes. Silly...

HGC is also a metabolism booster. It boosts other hormones that also burn fat & calories. It would be the perfect weight loss solution if it weren't for the potentially deadly side effects. No one has yet figured out how to make it safe, which is why doctors don't prescribe it to people who don't actually need it. Hollywood doctors, of course, will prescribe anything for the right price.

There are many careers that involve high personal risk, and there aren't many people who would turn down the fame and beauty those people have if all it called for was a little shot of something possibly dangerous. As a common 9-5-middle-class-mom, no, I wouldn't do it for the sake of beauty, but if my multimillion dollar job depended upon it.........I dunno. Professional fishermen take huge health risks. So do firemen, police, soldiers, etc. The list goes on and on. These people know what the public expects and they're doing what they do to themselves to try and deliver. Besides, it's their body. I have no business telling them what to do with it.

Steroids, are a very dangerous drug. And yes there needs to be more research done on this compound. This drug has lasting effects. This is why doctors only prescribe this when all other avenues have failed.

      Hello
"Besides illegal steroids, there is the business of using Human Growth Hormone, which can be legally prescribed, to slow and possibly reverse the aging process."
I definitely disagree whith this theory .Why don't we take advantage of natural medicine like homeopathic remedies .They can save and increase our energy without the adverse effects of HGH(Human Growth Hormone ) and steroids .

I have experienced the wonderful effects of homeopathic remedies on myself ,my husband ,my children and my patients .
You can visit a homeopath in your state and approve my idea .

      Sincerely yours dr.Sadeghi

Is Human Growth Hormone actually harvested from cadavers?

Just saw a show about Jose Canseco and the health problems,i.e. low sperm count due to testicular shrinkage , resulting from his steroids usage.Folks, no matter how hard you try, you're not going to fool mother nature.

I don't want to excuse what A-Rod did, but it's not likely that he was the only one who profited from his steroid use. Athletics are a billion dollar industry. I think he's a symptom of a systemic problem in a high pressure, extremely competitive industry.

Mike, I totally agree with you....I believe the bad rap is from the people who abuse steroids or growth hormones. Just like anything, especially alcohol, when you abuse it, it will screw anybody up. Real Sports with Bryant Gumble (on youtube) did a great piece about steroids and the lack of studies (actually none) and how it changed the perspective of the reporter...funny how such a hot subject has not been studied.....Are they afraid of what good outcomes might arise, imagine the uproar.....

Show me a death caused by steroids or growth hormone... Now show me how many deaths are caused by alcohol and cigarettes.. People are afraid of what they dont know or are jealous of others results... Demonizing things that will be prescribed to almost everyone within the next 10 yrs is just ignorance. I remember when I was following an all protein diet in the late 80's and everyone calling me crazy and how unhealthy it was.. then my parents were on the atkins diet yrs later...

This article makes it sound as if HGH is a steroid and nothing could be further from the truth. HGH is a synthetic, 191 bond of a molecule chain which mirrors the exact molecule chain of growth hormone which the human body already produces. Its just after the age of about 23 to 25 the body begins to shut down the production of this through the pituitary gland causing gray hair, fat to build up around the hips, stomach and waist, muscle deterioration, bad vision, a bad heart etc. Taking the synthetic kind is what everyone on the planet should be doing at about the age of 28 through the rest of their life. Anabolic steroids, testosterone in particular should be taken after the age of 30 as well the rest of a man's life in order to prevent stroke, heart attacks and aging and other health problems resulting from low HGH and low testosterone. Anyone over the age of 30, including any of these actresses and actors who take this, are very bright and on the ball and the medical community is finally becoming intelligent and embrassing this rather than making it taboo as a result of bad information and the lack of testing. Everyone should go to a MD who specializes in hormone replacement therapy and get a blood test and take it from there. But regular doctors other than hormone specialists don't have a clue about the benefits of such wonder, modern chemistry and knowledge.

Do you think Madonna got her Popeye arms from using the juice? I know people who go to the gym obsessively, too, and they sure as sh*t don't look like that! She is SCARY!

I'm sure some stars are on steriods, HGH and prohormones, but to accuse stars like madonna of using them is a little absurd. Don't get me wrong she may use them but you can't just assume that because she is in shape. You have to consider that these stars hire personal trainers who know what they are talking about. Thus they also eat right to put on and maintain that kind of muscle. They also don't have many of the stresses and working restraints that someone who works a 9-5 job may have.

This article is so off, I would guess the actual number of hormone supplement users (including HGH) is at least 10 times what this article states. In metropolitian areas, bio drugs are the norm, people in higher income bracket have been doing this for years (probably your doctor and his beautiful wife) Homone replacement (biologically, after a person, especially women, are beyond reproductive age, the body's hormone productions decreases significantly and thus you dry up, your organs/body shrinks(brain, liver, kidneys). By keeping your body at the hormonal level of your earlier years, your youth is prolonged. I think this may be one of the best kept secrets around. In fact, more research should be developed into hormone replacement and then the elderly wouldn't suffer so much from diseases like alzheimers (brain shrinkage one of the causes (research this for yourself)).
