    Hot Fitness Trends for 2011!

By Jennifer Anastasi, BounceBack Editorial Staff

We reached out to our Health & Fitness Expert, Stephanie Mansour (CEO of Step It Up with Steph) for the buzz on some of the hottest fitness trends for 2011. Here's her take on the top 5 coolest workouts and the best bang for your gym time:

"Depending on what your fitness goals are and what your lifestyle is like, there are many great new ways to get in shape, stay in shape, and even change your body shape!

    1. Bootcamp classes are excellent kicks in the booty to lose weight, build strength, and tone up FAST. These classes are great because they utiilize circuit and interval training, which are most important for weightloss. Bootcamps and circuit training work with intervals: one minute you will be doing as many push ups as you can, and the next you'll be sprinting. By changing up exercises and moving from one thing to another, you'll never get bored AND you'll keep your body guessing what's coming next, which makes losing weight easy.

    2. Kettlebells are also gaining popularity, especially among women. These weights are often described as "cannonballs with handles" and can be used in place of dumbbells. Kettlebell exercises add to interval training workouts, build strength, endurance, and flexibility. Swinging a kettlebell will certainly work your core and challenge your muscles in a variety of ways.

    3. The newest Pilates craze is the Power Plate workout. The power plate is a machine you stand on during your workout, while the plate underneath you vibrates. This makes it more difficult to keep your core engaged during everyday exercises, and is sure you leave your muscles sore after!

    4. If you're looking to get your groove on, Zumba is sweeping the nation. With a Latin influence in both the music and the moves, women across the country flock to these classes to burn tons of calories and sweat as if they're dancing in a club!

    5. Yoga Booty Ballet is another form of dance fitness. This is a combination of yoga, ballet, and dance that focuses on having fun, getting sweaty, and gaining flexibility and lean muscles.

In order to get your butt in gear, you need to get your head in gear! Make sure you're not sabotaging your fitness goals with negative body image beliefs or thoughts about yourself. The mental aspect of working out (why you're doing it, how you feel about your body, etc.) is as important as your actual workout. If you prefer more individual attention, private sessions are available everywhere. There are also private in-home trainers (like myself) who come to your home."

(*Remember, before trying these exercises or any exercise program, please consult with your physician. In addition, if you have any questions about how to perform an exercise safely, please consult with a certified athletic trainer.)

For the ladies that can't make it to Zumba or don't want to have to join a gym to do it, Get a Wii. They offer the ZUMBA FITNESS game on both that console and the Kinect for Xbox. Keep your new years resolution alive don't use an excuse as not being able to get to the gym keep you from having that summer body.

I like the fact that the power plate is 10,000$ worth of nothing. It has been proven in studies to have no benefits on people unless you are wheelchair bound.

I used to do Zumba years ago before anyone had heard of it. I like fitness crazes because I keep fit by changing what I do, which keeps me interested in it. My new thing is intenSati (among other things I do), which wasn't even mentioned in this article! I guess I am ahead of fitness trends. As long as you find some way to stay active, I think it's perfectly fine to change up what you do and follow trends. JUST GET MOVING! :-)

The best fitness is still the one you can do in your own home, and without following a video...DANCE. Screw learning steps or following someone else who's already mastered it and therefore makes you feel like a loser....just dance to your own favorite, upbeat songs, but dance for a solid 20 minutes, to start. The routine needs to give you time to warm up...and gradually pick up the pace until you're really moving fast and consistently for at least 12 minutes and concludes with a cool down song to allow you to bring your heart rate back to near normal. Keep it fresh and add time to the workout as your stamina increases. You can eventually incorporate resistance with elastic bands during warm up and cool down. Guaranteed to get you in shape for almost nothing. Your time, your place, your music...all you have to do is be consistent.

All you need to get a great workout is gravity and a floor. Unless you are on the space station you don't need to spend a lot of money on equipment or classes. Kettle Bells are great but you need to know how to use them properly to avoid injury and to get the most out of them. Do whatever you enjoy but don't think you have to spend any money to get fit. Push ups, Pull ups, ab exercises like plank, and other calisthenics will do wonders for your body and shouldn't take more than 30 minutes three times a week.

Looking for a girlfriend? Best way to get one is by either starting or joining a new dance fitness craze.... notice just about every picture or video you see of these going back to the 80s feature mostly (if not all) women

I'm 63 and in the best shape of my life from what I call JumpRock, which I started at age 55. The key, in my opinion, is to start a workout everyday without putting pressure on by commiting to how long it will last. If you keep it up, the way you feel afterwards will get you addicted to feeling that way, although lethargy will still try to stop you. That's how I got started at age 32 using an exercise bike, then 23 years later, JumpRock. http://www.youtube.com/qfeguy and http://qfeguy.com. Nothing for sale, just sharing my experience.

Ohhh come on you could have said more than you did about Zumba.
      PEACE,LOVE AND ZUMBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Charlie W, zumba isn't a gimic as you put it. It's exercise in disguise and soooo much fun. Before you go putting ANY form of exercise that others like down, give it a try.

Dedication and discipline and diet are the keys to being healthy. With that everything else as far as self confidence on ones own self will fall into place! People need to realize that working out is not a month long activity with instant benefits!! You need to put in the time and dedication!!! I hope that all of you who start these workout regime stick with it!!! Good luck to you all!

You forgot Crossfit and P90X. Candidly, anything that is described as 'hot', 'a craze', 'trend', 'sweeping the nation' is bound to fail. Look at the Atkins diet. Not to mention, you do not mention enough about dieting. That may not be the focus of your article, but the two go hand in hand. If you are going to workout, especially with the goal of losing weight, you diet is extremely important. You are what you eat, regardless of how much you exercise.
