How to curb food cravings: 6 things you can do right now

If you're a woman between the ages of 18 and 35, you're a slave to your cravings. Food psychologists at the University of Pennsylvania singled out that particular female demographic as having the biggest problem reining in their edible whims. They also found that 90 percent of the time, those whims are for chocolate.

In fact, the most popularly craved foods are 30 percent higher in fat than healthy grub and 50 percent lower in protein. But they feel so good going down. That's because commonly craved foods, like chocolate, release dopamine, activating your brain's pleasure center.

In simple terms, cravings are the saboteurs of your perfectly planned diet. They strike when you're at your most relaxed and they can drive you crazy unless you know how to curb them.

The good news is that they can be conquered in six simple steps. And no, attaching an alarm to your fridge isn't one of them.

Step 1: Spread your calories throughout the day. Cravings aren't always born out of hunger but if your stomach is slightly growling, it can make for a convenient excuse to indulge. If you graze lightly throughout the day instead of heaping on the massive portions during mealtime, you're less likely to rationalize that mid-day bag of chips.

Step 2: Stay distracted. Cravings come, on average, in 15-minute intervals, so if you're hankering for a hunk of cheese, get busy. Send out that email you've been meaning to tackle or spend some time getting lost in a blog. Studies show visual distractions are highly effective in fighting thoughts of food, so use the time to cater to some eye-candy.

Step 3: Give your tongue a treat, not your stomach. Keep breath mints or dissolving strips handy in case of emergencies. They'll activate your sense of taste and smell, without adding unneeded calories.

Step 4: Create a mantra. If a plate of cookies is beckoning, tell it who's boss. State your intention: "I will not eat this plate of cookies." Repeat it at least three times until it becomes a fact. Research shows that declarations of intention increase will power. And that's exactly what you need to call in for backup when cravings get the best of you.

Step 5: Go ahead and indulge, lightly. We never fully outgrow our inner child, and parents know the cardinal rule with kids is when you say they can't have something, they want it more. Same goes for your own cravings. The more you deny yourself sweets, the more you'll want them. Sweets shouldn't be completely taboo, but they should be considered the occasional reward, enjoyed in bites not boxes.

Step 6: Keep it brief. So you've caved into that piece of cake. All is not lost. Try to limit your indulgence to a few bites, savoring the flavor and texture but avoiding the complete annihilation of the objet desir. The satisfaction of tasting your treat will be intense at first but researchers have found that pleasure decreases dramatically after the first few bites. So savor the first few bites slowly and then stop yourself before your start destroying the evidence through your stomach.

My sister says she tells herself, "You don't really want that cookie." I tried that. Then I heard myself saying, "You liar. You know you want that cookie."

usually a craving for sugar is actually a need for protein.. your blood glucose levels fluctuate constantly, but increase in protein actually keeps your blood glucose at a more even level. Sugar -sucrOSE, lactOSE( sugar in milk) , fructOSE ( sugar in fruit) all contributes to your glucose in your body going up and down. Sugar or any other food sugar ( the "oses" your body CAN"T tell the difference) may spike your blood sugar and make you feel good for a short period, then it falls just as fast and you feel like crap...Try increasing protein , a craving is usually your body telling you that it is lacking something.. I've found that by not eating ANY processed food it cuts out entirely all food cravings. I have been eating this way for over a year now due to health reasons and have now become almost totally vegetarian as well (except for bacon). My cholesterol has lowered into the normal range now and to boot I've lost over 25 pounds. Anyone that says you can't manage yourself only needs to just try. One step at a time. Processed foods I think are filled with whatever it is that makes us crave foods. It works, it really does! Just eat what you want, just no processed foods, i.e., bread, chips, cookies, anything from a box or a can!

I asked my doctor last year if he wanted to recommend anything to help me lose weight. He looked me straight in the eyes and said in a serious tone "Duct tape!".

Always feed your cravings. We crave either fat, sugar or salt. So, figure out which of the three you're craving and FEED your craving with "medicinal" doses, literally pour a little salt in your hand and lick it. Same with sugar. That amount of salt will satisfy your body's need(craving)for salt with MUCH less salt than eating a serving of a salty snack. For fat cravings, spread a full teaspoon glob of real butter on a saltine cracker rather than eat a seving of french fries or salad dressing. Oftentimes we crave to chew and work our mouth. Chew a piece of gum then instead of eating something crunchy chewy. Also, if your cravings are oral fixations, just read poetry aloud. This approach to cravings led 38 nurses I worked with to lose an average of 32 pounds each in three months. Feed your cravings!

"Keep breath mints or dissolving strips handy in case of emergencies. They’ll activate your sense of taste and smell, without adding unneeded calories."

I don't ussually leave comments but this one is too much. 4-5 Years ago, I was in the university. Mine had no campus at the time(they were building it) and the only place to get food was a shoppette full of greasy food. Most of the time I couldn't go with a lunchbag, so what I thought I could do was (to wait till I got home to eat lunch, around 1 pm) (AND to get a fresher breath even though I always took my toothbrush) was eat a mint. I started with normal ones but the sugar rush I felt left me dizzy, so after a time(a long time) I switched to sugar free. Of course, that "sugarfree" is really"table sugar free but we add another type of sugar". I started getting my migraine(3 years without it, till this) and suddenly started having trouble with my stomach, gases, and at the end of my studies, my back teeth had rotted in the center because of caries I wasn´t even aware at the time( I never had caries before)... I started (after eliminating all other possible causes and being warned by a friend) looking up the breath mint ingredients. Sure enough, those ingredients won't hurt you if you take one sometimes, but, one each day 3 times a week for 3 years is going to cost you a lot in medical bills. So this advice is one of the worst you've given, specially after knowing that the friend that warned me about breath mints found the information HERE....btw, sugar no matter what type always adds calories.

The two major cravings everyone has is "Sweet" and "Salty". To curb my desire for both I found always having some Marshmellows and a bag of Salty Pretzels on hand extinguished that craving.
Both are fat free and so you satisy your craving and don't consume a lot of calories as just a small bite or two usually stop the desire to purge.

Couple that with one good meal a day and veggie grazing during and light 15 minute workout helped me lose 40 lbs. Ohh..and one day a week like Sunday is reserved to eat whatever you want.

Eat about ten whole dry roasted almonds! That is about 20-70 Kcal. They ten to make you feel a bit full until the next real meal and just before a meal help you eat less.

Keep dissolving breath strips handy in case of emergency food cravings? Are you kidding me? Get that one out of the anorexic's playbook?! Because I'm pretty sure that level of food obsession, planning, and control fits into eating disorder territory. I think it's pretty sick to disseminate this as healthy eating advice.

The woman in this article looks incredibly thin. It seems like we are giving tips to anorexics. Remember that weight loss is not the only important health issue in America. There are thousands of teen girls who are suffering from eating disorders reading these articles.
