If Abortion Were Illegal: A Glimpse of the Reality

abortion illegalabortion illegalImagine getting pregnant, only to be diagnosed with cancer. Now imagine it getting worse. Much worse.

In a story that should give women everywhere pause, Michelle Harte was forced to travel out of the country to have an abortion because she was living in Ireland, where the law only allows abortion in cases where a hospital has determined a mother's life is at risk if she continues with the pregnancy. Ironically, her own doctors had advised her to terminate to proceed with cancer treatments, but the ethics committee that had final say on her abortion said no.

More from The Stir: 11 Ways to Ensure Your Kid Ends Up in Therapy

By the time all was said and done, the delay in cancer treatment allowed the disease to spread in her body. She's now been declared "terminally ill." If she dies, she'll leave behind her daughter, motherless.

Harte's story came out this week after the story of yet another woman in a similar situation blew wide open the problems with governments having the ultimate say over a woman's womb. The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Ireland breached the "human rights" of that woman -- currently known as C -- by refusing her an abortion, forcing her to seek care outside of the country as well.

To put this in perspective, just this week, doctors began talking about the very real possibility that Americans delaying childbirth will increase the number of pregnant women facing a breast cancer diagnosis. The doctors recommended women get treatment for the cancer as soon as possible ... and outlined the risks of sticking with the pregnancy.

More from The Stir: Should the Abortion Couple be Shot? Let's Vote on it!

Put the two situations together along with a third: imagine the right-to-lifers get their way. Seventy percent of evangelical Christians in this country are in favor of completely overturning Roe v. Wade. There would be no room for "well, if you're sick, you can choose." American women would face Michelle Harte's horror -- the choice, followed by the stress of traveling while terminally ill, plus the stigma. As her partner Neil Doolan told the Irish Times:

She was very unwell. She was very stressed out, physically very weak, nauseous, and vomiting.

It's easy for the right to life contingent to mark abortion off as the easy out for loose women and stupid teenagers. But women like Michelle Harte crop up every day. Moms who were doing nothing wrong, but are treated like criminals trapped in the jail of their own bodies.

Women die when they can't take control of their health care. How is that any better than aborting a fetus?

Scientifically speaking, the research has shown that abortion does not make a cancer patient any more likely to survive. Please check your facts before writing an article like this.

Has anyone ever considered making it so woman have the resources to prevent getting in the situation where she has to consider abortion in the first place?
      • RelaxManne 3 months ago
The article was about a married woman who had breast cancer. She was considering an abortion because she didn't want to have chemo while she was pregnant. The point is, it's not always floozies that are considering abortions.

Also, outlawing abortions doesn't prevent people from getting them, it just makes them more dangerous for poor women who can't afford the best underground abortions. In many countries where abortion is illegal, botched abortions are the number one cause of women's deaths.

The reality is that making abortions illegal will not deter women from getting them. There are other UNSAFE ways to have an abortion which could lead to fatal infections and mutilated fetuses for not being done correctly. The life of the mother and "life" of the fetus or permanent disfigurement and suffering of that fetus if it happens to survive in exchange for a safe, sterile and medically supervised abortion. Yeah, that makes sense.
Not to mention all of the actual living babies that will be thrown in dumpsters, bodies of water, left on the street in the freezing cold or scorching heat, sold for drugs or neglected and made to feel like crap because they were not wanted in the first place. Yeah that's much better than them never being aware of their own existence full of pain and suffering.
And then you have the women who, if given the choice, would have had an abortion but couldn't because it's illegal so they raise the child and love and nurture it and probably would give that up if given the chance to do over but they will always have a feeling of resentment towards whoever, the child, the government, god, because they had to give up their own dreams and future to take care of a child that was not meant to be in the mix.
YEP, all of the scenarios are so much better than a safe, medically provided abortion!

THE ONLY PERSON WHO SHOULD CONTROL A WOMANS REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IS THE WOMAN HERSELF. If there is a god and he has a problem with their decision then I am sure they will answer to him eventually.

Hi out there to all the Pro-Lifer's. I was just wondering how many unwanted, abused, drug addicted, alcohol fetal syndrome, down syndrome, etc children you all have adopted? I'm sure EACH AND EVERY PRO-LIFE advocate would open their homes and hearts to the would have been aborted fetuses, right? You all would have a home full of otherwise unwanted children, right? DO any of you pro-life idiots ever think past your 2000 year old work of fiction and think for yourselves? It is more humane to abort a fetus then to force a mother who doesn't want or can't handle or didn't plan on a baby into giving birth. Maybe mom can't afford another baby, maybe she doesn't want a baby right now, maybe she was raped, maybe she just forgot or plain didn't use birth control. What ever the reason, women should always have control over their reproduction.
      • Terry 3 months ago
Control their reproduction, sure. Kill an unborn baby - NO.
      • BoB 1 month 20 days ago
Take a look at China, Terry. THATS your "controlled reproduction" right there.
    • Switchrat  •  Suwanee, Georgia  •  3 months ago
FIne. If you don't want abortions, then take the fetus out of the woman's body. There you go, she isn't killing it. You cannot force a woman to carry someone else on her back. If the baby dies, oh well.
    • EB  •  Jackson, Mississippi  •  3 months ago
Compare the numbers of aborted babies to the number of cases like you used. You proborts always use the difficult exceptions to justify the wholesale slaughter of unborn humans. Truth is, you would never settle for abortion being legal only in those circumstances.
      • ArleneS 3 months ago
Just like you anti choice people wouldn't allow birth control to be given freely as an options to teenagers because of your religious beliefs. Marriage only right?
      • Erica 3 months ago
To say that you can only get an abortion in certain circumstances is ridiculous, you would have many claiming rape or whatever. I think you have missed the point of the article, no matter what women should be able to choose because in this case because this women who didn't have a choice she is going to die.

INNOCENT BABIES DIE AND IT IS YOUR CHOICE??? SHAME ON YOU, YOU SELFISH UNCARING SORRY EXCUSE FOR SOMEONE SAYING WHAT IS FAIR! And for all of you who CLAIM the church is against taking a human life...might want to check out some little stories about the Holy Crusades, the witch trials, and any number of wars fought in the name (and condoned by) your own religion. Bunch of hypocrites.

And I'm sure you're all very supportive of all the was the US has fought- did you know that war involves killing people- even innocent people and children.

Abortion is not a for of birth control, but BC does not always work. I know 2 women who used BC Pills that still got pregnent. Abortion is a safety net when other's might fail.

The wages of sin is death. Both of the parents exercised irresponsible choice by being sexual in the first place, or putting themselves in situations where that might occur.

Those entities that condone these actions by others will share in the consequences as well. This is why America continues to go downhill, we have repeatedly turned away from what is right.

When individuals continue to make bad choices, it is necessary for more moral and responsible persons help them by making rules accordingly.

I'm Catholic and pro-life. Most everyone I grew up with feels the same as I do, that pro-life does not mean pro-suffering. There is a difference between having to give up a baby because the pregnancy could kill you and willfully aborting it because it wasn't planned and you don't want to lose your figure/lose face/lose your freedom to party and go to clubs. In the former case, the mother should be given the choice of how much risk she is willing to take to have her baby. In the latter, the lack of maturity and irresponsibility should not be shouldered by my tax money.

It's not my fault some ho spread her legs and got knocked up so I definitely don't want to be a party to her murderous whims. And even if the pregnant girl were some 15-year-old who "just made one mistake", it would be a bigger mistake to show her how easy it is to kill a baby. Instead of suggesting an abortion and teaching her that she wouldn't be loved if she had the baby, why not teach her what family means and be supportive instead?

It would be different if she were raped. But a rape victim shouldn't take it out on the baby either. There's always the option of adoption.

(I know at least two women who've had abortions because they "weren't ready to be mothers and couldn't take that kind of responsibility". It's been years since they lost their babies, but they've both said that they still regret it and they wouldn't have done it if someone had told them they didn't have to.)

Legislation should NEVER be changed because a group of zealots would rather have the government do their dirty work. These kinds of movements are best performed as grassroot efforts. Statistics show that grassroot efforts for unwanted pregnancies, preg. prevention, sexual health & education work best and get greater results through community support, church outreach, etc. Our US Constitution very brilliantly stands for "separation of church and state," primarily for the reason of FREEDOMS....freedom to choose how you worship, freedom to choose most things in our lives - in this country that stands for, and supports FREEDOM. The GOP has historically stood for "Big brother (government) staying out of our bedrooms and personal lives," smaller government, and our rights to pave our own paths, so the recent hypocrisy is very unsettling for many of the old die hard Republcans who have been watching their party change rapidly before our eyes. For those out there who support packing concealed weapons, and sending our youth into battle, but want legislation to stop abortion rights appear gravely hypocritical, and that dychotomy of thinking is a large reason that many GOPs are leaning toward a more neutral, less radical Independent Party. For those who are opposed to abortion, then you should, by all means, choose wisely NOT to have an abortion. And NO, I agree, the government should NOT pay for anyone's abortion (even the very poor can gather finds for that), but the fundamental right to choose is just that, a RIGHT, a Constitutional right! That decision is between the woman and her supreme being and should remain a Constitutional right. If we start taking away rights like this, then what's next?? If we let spirituality and personal religious dogma interfere with legislation, then look out world....you are paving the way for Shariah law, etc. to come in and claim the same rights. Then we WILL need God to bless America, more than ever!!

Although I oppose abortion because, being brought up Catholic, I was taught from an early age that abortion was the killing of an innocent human being, I do understand now, after decades of hearing stories about it, that there are exceptions to every rule. And abortion does have legitimate exceptions. When the life or health of the mother are at risk, that is a good exception. It is a horrible fact of life that a child may have to die before being born so that his mother may continue her life, but this imperfect world we live in is nowhere near fair. Maybe one day, we will be able to treat a mother's illness without risking her baby's life, but for now, someone has to make a choice. Mother or baby.

I think the author should not be so quick to lump those who agree with the "right to life" together because as on any issue, there are extremes. I am pro-life, but I do believe in two circumstances where an abortion should be allowed: Rape and when the mother's life is in jeopardy. If this was also the law in Ireland, then the intervening and prevention of an abortion for this mother was criminal because I am sure all of her medical records and physician's testimony's proved that aborting the child to begin her cancer treatments would save her life.

Joy in Seattle: I think it's amazing that you said that because that is something I have felt and believed since I was a child. I used to ask myself why, if a mom is supposed to be so willing to give their life for their child, is it any different when you are carrying the child? If you had a 7 year old and a 5 year old and had to throw yourself in front of a car to save the 5 year old, is anyone gonna say you shouldn't have done that because what about the 7 year old who still needs you here? No. So why do people ask that about the other child you have here? She has a dad and I am sure other family. I am sure she would be fine. So if the mom needs to sacrifice her life to bring her child into the world then isn't that just under the heading of being a mother? People argue that "well, it's a fetus" as if that somehow means it doesn't matter until it actually pops out. Well, if that's the case, we should not warn mothers to watch their diet or anything they ingest while pregnant because it doesn't matter what happens to the fetus until it's actually born. Motherhood starts at conception because from the time you realize you are pregnant, it is your responsibility to put the welfare of your child ahead of your own. It might sound heartless but I see no real distinction.

Is anyone going to mention what happens to the child while it is being murdered and the pain it has to go through? I used to be pro-choice until I found out how abortions are being done. No one can tell me that that people don't have late term abortions and the child feels nothing. The people that i know that have had abortions didn't need them, they just didn't want a child at that time in their lives. Now every single person I know that has gone through this, has had years of guilt that they can't get over and it actually has ruined the life of a friend of mine because she can not forgive herself. How is that better for anyone? I am not a Christian and I'm tired of people thinking that I am because the way I feel. (nothing against the Christians) I'm so tired of womens rights and abortion being linked together. As a women, I do not worry about if I'm able to murder my unborn child or not. That doesn't even make the list of things that I have to worry about.
    • Courtney  •  1 year 3 months ago
What's worse: a woman aborting her unborn child to save her own life or a woman dying and leaving her child behind in a world full of perverts, liars, fools, and people who love taking advantage of others, with no one or few people to direct that child to the straight and narrow path? The first scenario allows the woman to hopefully gain her good health back, enough so that she may one day become pregnant again, or at least have the strength and willpower to adopt a child. The second robs the child of knowing what a mother's love feels like - there is NOTHING like a mother's love, no matter how many people shower you with their own love and gifts and time. Sure, there are people out there who want kids and who would adopt a baby and treat it like gold for all its life, but don't you think the mother should have the right to watch HER baby grow up and make a difference in the world? In the end, a woman should be responsible for her own body, but life isn't so black and white; sometimes you're placed in circumstances that will be so foggy and gray you can't possibly imagine a way out of them. Each and every woman has the right to decide what's best for her body and her life, just as each man, woman, and child has the right to choose clothes, hairstyles, friends, loves, and so on. It's not me who will judge or be judged for another person's actions, so those decisions are all up to them. Plus, THEY will have to live with it, not me. A lot of what's wrong with America is that everyone tries to make everyone else's problem theirs, instead of minding their own counsel and interfering when asked to. You can't plant roses in your neighbor's garden if your own is dry and dead...

no harley wed you just dont get it do you??????? so let me just break it down into simpleton terms that you and others can understand.my point is not to link war and abortion into one similar situation, but to expose the hypocrisy of those that so adamently oppose abortion because of its obviously murderous intent while on the same page supporting war that has the same murderous intent and glorifying that action while finding the other completely appalling.yes war is something waged by adults against adults, but if you really think that women and children are not murdered in war then you live in a dream war. approximately 100 thousand innocent civilians have been killed in the iraq/afghanistan wars alot of them women and children. why havent you bible thumping christians that march in the streets here against abortion done anything to stop that carnage?????? could it be just like i said that you will support gov. santioned murder as long as we are killing someone you dont like or dont have to look in the eye. i invite you to look into a childs eyes yes even an iraqi childs eyes just after he or she has been shot by an american bullet. otherwise frankly i think you dont know a damn thing about war and only are against abortion because it eases your conscience and makes you feel like you are someone hollier than thou.i have been around your kind before and that is the reason why i no longer subscribe to organized religion. TOO MANY DAMN HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!!!!
