In the news: Gwyneth Paltrow Has Low Vitamin D (Are You at Risk?)

It's recently been reported (by the star herself) that Gwyneth Paltrow has suffered from the early stages of osteopenia, a bone-weakening disease commonly diagnosed in elderly women (left untreated, your bones may become more brittle, leading to osteoporosis). So how is it that despite Paltrow's supposedly healthy lifestyle, she found herself in this predicament?

Paltrow says it's because her levels of Vitamin D were too low. Vitamin D helps your bones absorb calcium, which keeps them healthy and strong. Your body produces D in response to sun exposure, but it can be hard to get enough when you (smartly!) apply SPF.

Researchers are still debating the ideal amount amount of D (the government may even recommend a higher daily intake soon), but in the meantime, healthy women should be sure to get at least 200 IU daily, and up to 800 mg. You can find Vitamin D in fortified milk, yogurt, eggs, salmon, or a multivitamin.

Not sure if you're getting enough D? Signs of a D deficency include muscle pain/weakness and bone pain. Don't let these warning signals go unanswered. The only surefire way to know if you are D deficient is to get a blood test, Kathleen Fairfield, M.D., a vitamin researcher in Portland, Maine encourages. Ask about it at your next physical.

We'll keep you posted on the guidelines concerning your daily intake of Vitamin D. Until then, stick with the currently recommended amounts and you'll be sure to keep your bones in beautiful shape.

My vitamin D count was dangerously low. Turns out gluten was the culprit. I no longer allow gluten in my diet. Several health problems cleared right up and, in ten months time, I have lost 3 pants sizes. I feel better than I have in 20 years. It's certainly not the case with everyone who has low D counts but worth investigating. btw: much of the testing is inaccurate. Just eliminate gluten to see how you feel. Also, I don't buy the pre-packaged cookies, muffins, etc. labeled gluten-free. I have read labels carefully and found gluten in some of these. For example, the product may contain maltodextrin or some other obscure gluten-laden ingred.

I was just diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency today! My doctor is prescribing 8 weeks of a prescription strength vitamin course to get my numbers up. Ladies, it's VERY common-- get checked! My bloodwork was part of a normal physical....

      isn't it odd?

before i would wear sunscreen religiously and my skin was gray and flaky and now that i get more sunlight without sunscreen my skin feels soft and dewy and i have my natural color back.

Why is anyone surprised that Ms. Paltrow has osteopenia? She's a vegan. That means she doesn't eat dairy. Unless one supplements properly when eating a vegan diet, things like this tend to happen.

I'm a 42y.o. female, just started seeing a new internist who does integrative medicine in Chicago. I was already taking Vitamin D supplements for awhile, 200i.u., (note, you should be taking Vit D-3, it's the best form), and my blood tests showed I was low, so my doctor has me on 10,000i.u. for 3 mos and will check levels at that time. I also tested low iron levels and need to supplement with that too.

I don't suntan because I'm fair skinned and burn easily, but yes it's true, the best method is 15-20 minutes of direct sunlight daily on your skin without sunscreen.

And this is news because?????????? If you stop wearing so much damn cancer causing sunscreen you would get all the vitamin D you need from the sun. DUHHHHHHHHHHH
