    Is Running Bad for Your Knees? Researchers' Shocking Answer ...

    As much as I love running, I tend to have an ongoing concern about the sport, and that concern involves my joints. After all, health experts have long suspected a link between running and joint damage, even arthritis. Now, after a review of collective research over the last few years, researchers have a more clear answer for us, and it really surprised me!

    The shocking news, reports Time, is that running has gotten a bad rap. According to the article: "Not only is there no connection between running and arthritis, the new studies say, but running--and perhaps regular, vigorous exercise generally--may even help protect people from joint problems later on."

    In a major study conducted at Stanford University over the course of 20 years, researchers tracked nearly 1,000 runners and non-runners and found no link between running and joint problems. Bonus for runners, according to the study: Runners experienced less "physical disability," and had a 39 percent lower death rate than non-runners. Fascinating!

      Be careful with the downhills.
      I used to make up time on the downhills because I was slow on the uphills. Now my knee starts to hurt at around the three mile mark to the point where I need to stop running:( It doesn't matter that its on a level course. I attribute it to all the agressive downhill running.

      The best thing for me is walk and print, walk and sprint.
      I have an ankle that sometimes it does not cooperate.
      Running is absolutely a must do! If I can I will. Bring it on.

      i guess it really depends on the support. i used to run summers and hurt my knees, but my guess is i was using the wrong shoes. i guess i can run again.

      this never even occurred to me before. i run because the benefits outweight the negatives. arthritis or not, i would think the bad effects of not running at all would be way worse- such as obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc.

      How can you people love running? Am I missing something? I have just started running on the treadmill for 30 mins and I its some what hard on me... Most of all I hate having runny nose as I am running... Is this normal to you runners?

      After just undergoing tkr 7 months ago, due to arthritis, I suppose my running and even walking long distances are over. Previously, I was able to walk over five miles a day and now I am told my knees will not take the pounding of pavement and have to stay with soft surfaces. Finding an exercise to control my weight is challenging but have to find a way to keep myself active.

      This is awesome news! I love running and trying to crunch at least 35 miles/week. I'm glad it won't hurt my knees in a long run...literally:)

      In my opinion, it's better to run on a treadmill than outside on the hard pavement. At least on the treadmill you have some cushioning. Many people (my hubby included) who ran outside when they were younger now have lower back problems. While it may not be the only cause, no doubt it contributed to it. Swimming is the best exercise if you have joint pain as there is no pressure on the joints at all in the water.

      does any body know if the treadmill is really bad for knee,s mine are killing me,i stoped for awhile and knees, still hurt,and i only walk on it,3 times a week,thanks

      Oh wow, the title of this article scared the hell out of me. Who ever thinks that running is bad for knees must jump off a cliff. Yes running damages parts of the body if you are holding the wrong posture so before getting into running habbit, take "how to run properly" classes haha, they offer them in BC at least.

      How in the world is there a lower death rate? Everyone dies...

      of course the impact of running on hard pavement will effect your joints altogether. but the positives of running or any other kind of exercise will help to prevent joint/cartilage/muscle pain more so than not exercising would. a few things to check before running- your form, your shoes and the support they offer to the arch in your foot, the surface you are running on and the impact it causes. it is important that you stretch well before hand, so that your muscles, ligaments, and tendons are loose to accommodate any surprise trips, and make sure your shoes properly support your arch because this so contributes to the overall alignment from your feet, to your ankles, knees, and hips. and your running form, run comfortably, it should feel natural, but you wanna make sure that your feet, ankles, and knees also all move in a way that will accommodate any mishaps.

      Sweet! I run because the positives (mental and physical) far outweigh any negatives. That said, it's nice to have one less item in the negative column.

      I love running, I run up to 75 miles a week and done many marathons, no problems and I'm 50. Yeah once in awhile I get sore muscles from a fast workout, but no big problems.My knees feel fine I do take supplements. I think that more damage comes from running in other sports from fast stops and pivoting.

      I used to play basketball before developing osteoarthritis in my knees and other joints, so I quit playing. I can run a little bit if my son or husband need me, but walking helps me more.

      I love to run i try and get in 20miles aweek. I'm glad to hear that running is not sooo bad on the knees. Decatur....

      This is good to know. I used to enjoy running and wouldn't mind getting into it again. However, I'm tired of trying to keep up with conflicting studies. It seems like the "experts" are always flip-flopping with their advice.

      Four of my son's fellow Marines have knee complications from PTing every day. If you do run/jog/walk, do not use the same route every time. Switch routes, directions, anything to keep your knees in "workable" shape. Following the same routine will destroy cartlidge (sp?). Exercise but do it cautiously. Even on treadmills,etc.

      Walking is more my speed. I've had 3 knee operations so I don't want to chance it. Low impact elypticals (cardio), yoga & playing golf help keep me in shape.
