Whether it is made of sand, silt, clay or loam, soil is the foundation for every garden, flower bed and yard. Healthy, productive plants start with the right kind of soil. Ideally, soil is made up of equal parts of sand, silt, clay and loam, but, more often than not, home gardeners find that their soil must be amended to grow bountiful crops.
